School Construction Agency Faulted For Project Oversight, Incomplete Records And Missing Reports

The Interagency Committee on School Construction (IAC), which oversees the state’s $336 million annual school construction budget, had problems overseeing construction projects, recovering state funds, and reporting on maintenance inspections, auditors found in a report released Friday.

Auditors identified four weaknesses in the IAC’s operations, highlighting concerns that the milllions of dollars going into school construction called for better management and administration. The Interagency Committee is under the Board of Public Works, chaired by the governor.

The audit found the committee’s records disorganized and, at times, lacking altogether, making it difficult to track projects and contract costs.

  1. The audit department does great work, but has no teeth. If you work for the State you can lose millions, get caught and not be fired.

It's not the State's money that they are losing, it's our money; that why the State doesn't care.

  2. What a surprise!

    Incompetence reigns.

Yet we are told over and over again to trust these people.

And no one is ever held accountable.

  6. There is much trouble and corruption in many departments within this State. Mostly state workers who found a job, and lingered there for years and years to get their retirement. It's the ole story of good ole girls and boys club. They have a job for life. They never worked in a real business environment and have no idea of what a real budget, and real management is. Don't ever bring their mistakes to light because they will stab you in the back every chance they get. It's their way or the highway. If they think a person has integrity, that person will soon be gone. It's the state way. They don't care if there's a better, safer, cheaper way to do a job; just keep your mouth shut and don't worry what others are doing. Do the job the way we want or leave. Taxpayers are paying for this stupidity everyday here on the shore.

  7. Why does the IAC and school building commissions always approve fancy Taj Mahal schools. The new James M. Bennett high school had millions of dollars wasted on it's fancy construction. I am sure the school could have been built at half the cost. Bennett Middle School is going to be the same way.
