Maryland Senate OKs Ban On Smoking In Cars With Young Kids

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Senate has approved a ban on smoking in vehicles if a child under 8 is a passenger.

The Senate passed the measure on a 27-20 vote on Wednesday.

Drivers also wouldn't be able to allow other passengers to smoke in a vehicle with a child under eight.

  1. I don't smoke but do wonder if government will eventually control every facet of our lives in the process of protecting us from ourselves???????

  2. But the eight year old is allowed to smoke in the car.

  3. I don't smoke, but I have enough sense to no it is dangerous and someone has to advocate for the children. They don't know any better and their parents should. By the way I have had asthma all of my life because both my parents were heavy smokers.

  4. They won't be able to control this any better than they do with handheld cell phones while driving. They are just cluttering up the law books with stupid laws. These are both common sense issues and going any road at any time of day you see a lot of people that have missed the boat on common sense!

  5. If you smoke and have a young looking eight year old, you better carry a copy of the birth certificate and be prepared to be pulled over and be subject to search.

  6. Just wondering why the age of 8 was used. So if your child is 9 it's legal? How many people carry around a birth certificate of their child while in a vehicle. It's just as harmful for the 9 and above as it is for 8 and below.

  7. I would hope the 8 year old is the passenger and not the driver.

  8. LET ME SEE YOUR PAPERS PLEASE!!!

that's where it is going... DUH...

You can;t tell the difference between and 8 year old versus a 9 or 10 year old... shit in MD your kid has to be in a booster seat not until a certain age but until a certain weight...

As poster above said, its is just another way to stop you and give you a ticket for MONEY, and to search you or find other things wrong with your car or to find drugs...

Also it is just to see what they can and can't control and what we will allow them to control... They are testing the waters DUH if this is OK then the rest is...

Notice how the NY soda ban was ILLEGAL and a judge said so, so this could be as well...

  11. But you don't need a birth certificate to get in-state tuition rate in a MD college or to vote.

  13. Its about government intrusion legalizing another method to stop and detain and find other reason to bust you for something else...its common sense that you don't smoke in front of children for health reasons...however it seems that government always comes up for reasons to invade our privacy.. intrude in our lives and conduct illegal searches all in the name of the children and the better of ourselvesBS... if you think it is okay to support the disease in this country that is destroying the core values of liberty and freedom you will always have a few idiots ignorant stupid people we have no consideration for anybody but themselves... but allowing government to continue this insane invasion and violation of the Constitution needs to be stopped..just another turn of the vise on all of us and set us up for more bad law and unconstitutional precedent

  14. At one time, people were permitted everywhere. At one time, there were buildings without air conditioning and people were permitted to occupy them. At one time, people were permitted to see tobacco products on display. At one time, you could drink any size soda you wanted. At one time, Government didn't know tobacco was addictive. At one time, Government didn't realize that an addicted tobacco user would still smoke regardless of how high they taxed tobacco. At one time, the White House was known as the People's House and open to everyone. At one time, the Constitution was a respected document. Sigh! It's been TOO LONG. Please VOTE and get the liberals in office out from Salisbury to Washington.

  15. How long until people can't smoke in their own homes if they have children?

What legal grounds would they have to search? And what would they be searching for?

You are a clod. Give YOUR rights away. Leave OURS alone.

My God, I don't know how we survived without seatbelts, parents smoking next to us, guns in trucks and everywhere else, no speed or red light cameras, or any other such 'protections'.

Heck, today kids are lucky IF they have a parent much less two.

But we got laws up the ying yang.

And fools that applaud and beg for more.

That's why your taxes are so high. Babysitters want to get paid too.

And no, I'm not saying smoking around kids is ok, before one of you nuts suggest that.

I am tired of laws upon laws restricting my life and freedoms.

I'm also tired of daisies that encourage these types of laws and think they can dictate how others live and breathe.

If you creeps would mind your own business, you wouldn't have time to mind mine.

  18. MORE facist crap from the people who CLAIM to represent us. This is NOTHING but another reason to stop drivers to "check them out". Cops can't even hit something they SHOOT at from less than 10 yards away (unless they empty the enire clip), but somehow they will be able to identify children who are nine and not eight years old? Really? Maybe the drones will do facial recognition from the hundreds of millions of photographs they've stored and be able to report the ages of your children. If you don't think we are headed for a total police state, you ain't payin' attention. The LEAST you could do would be to start wearing your Gestapo unform in public. It would make target selection a lot easier for the people who still want freedom and not supervision.

Once the police pull a person over all they need to say is that the driver was acting nervous. Then they call for a K-9 scan of vehicle. That is a search of the vehicle.

Yeah, I know the tricks they use and yes, I guess that would be legal.

But it doesn't make it right.
