D.C. Council Postpones Welfare Cuts

The D.C. Council voted Tuesday to postpone long-planned cuts to the city's welfare program for another six months.

The city had planned to slash benefits on April 1 for recipients who have been receiving assistance for more than five years, but Mayor Vincent Gray's administration said the District had not yet completed the steps it needed to take before it would be comfortable trimming payouts for thousands of people.

"We're trying to send a message," Gray told The Washington Examiner on Tuesday. "But we're going to do it in a compassionate fashion... We're trying to strike a balance, the balance being to get all of this geared up and to do it so that people don't experience any suffering along the way."

  1. This is what happens in places where people that vote for a living outnumber the people that work for a living.

Funny, they don't feel that way about taxpayers.

  5. NO!!! Don't tax food stamps, they'll just pass that on to the working people as well.

  6. Want a guaranteed way to start a riot, cut welfare and food stamp benefits in D.C. If you own a liquor store, I would make sure your fire insurance is up to date.

  7. Just get rid of the current DEM slime. That will take care of most of the problems.

  8. Are you kidding???? Five years on welfare, and he's afraid of making cuts???? The first cut should be his removal from office, after that start cutting at $50.00 intervals until they get to work. At least Clinton did try to reform welfare it was called welfare to work and within five years you had to be off welfare and working. Still they got free medical, child care, and some food stamps but they had to have proof of verified work to be eligible. With obama, just give them every, and anything they want irrespective of working for a living. After all, in my opinion he is a perfect example he doesn't do anything but play golf, take trips, and bully working people. He is of no value. What a shadow of a leader...not!

  9. What do you expect? The zoo animals expect their regular feeding times and if no forthcoming they will go bezerk. Heaven knows they will not be able to fend for themselves.
