A Letter To The Editor 3-23-13

Let me preface this comment by saying this is not a one location issue. This concern is for every McDonalds I have visited recently. Here is my issue, we are in very tough times, people are unemployed, money is tight, whatever the reason our finances need to go further than ever before. If you agree, why would our local franchises be ripping us off and not speaking the truth about it when confronted? This is the brief breakdown; We have some specials going on - $1 any size coffee, $1 large soda, $3 steak bagel, $3 steak burrito (2qty). You can buy (a-la-carte)a large coffee$1, hasbrown$1 and a steak entre$3 for a total $5 plus tax. If you buy a "value' meal with a small coffee it's $5.69, then i guess I had the nerve to ask for a large coffee in place of the small and they said that would be extra. My obvious question was, "if all the coffee is one price how can you charge more?" The answer? "That's only if you buy it separately". So i purchased it all a-la-carte. Why should I need to do that?

So i decided to look at the other "value" meals and it repeats itself on a number of occasions. The worst was the lunch/dinner "value" meal of the onion cheddar burger. The Medium "value" meal includes; medium soda, small fries and 2qty of the onion cheddar burgers $4.99. A-la-carte; large soda or sweet tea, small fries, 2qty onion cheddar burgers $4. Same answer as the first when I asked for a large upgrade of either soda or sweet tea, "that will be extra".
I just don't get it. Why is this O.K.?

  1. It's ok because people like you keep going there. If I thought I was being treated unfairly, I'd eat someplace else.

  2. It's not okay. It sucks more money from the trusting, the illiterate and the poor.

  6. I had lunch at one local restaurant just before Christmas. The food was good as it always has been. However, when we got the bill I thought it sounded high, but I never complain and I always leave a generous tip. When I took a look at our bill I noticed the price of the sodas were $3 each. That is unlimited refills but I rarely even get one refill. I know every business has to make money and I surely wouldn't complain when the food is always good. I'd rather see the price of the food be priced and not be surprised when the bill comes. I mean $20 for lunch is a bit too expensive.

  8. If you ain't happy with the deal/product/price, don't buy it!
If this is a major problem in your life, can't imagine what your lesser problems could be.

  9. if this is all you have to "worry" and "complain" about; shame, shame, shame.
for those of you who eat out; always order water to drink, don't order desert or appetizers and just eat the bread that's usually served before the meal and eat the entree. also many places will let you order off the lunch menu for dinner if you ask.
this way you'll save a lot of money. have desert when you get home.

  10. This is not the only place it happens. We have all been programmed to think that if we buy in bulk it will be cheaper. You need to check the price on all items. I have found several things while shopping that are cheaper in the smaller size than the bulk size.

  12. I imagine it has to do with the way their Point of Sale system is programmed and how they run their inventory.

  13. People believe anything , they think they are getting a deal, but not really.
They think they have a wonderful president , but , not really.
They think the economy is getting better , but , not really.
obamie has made a fool out of the country and his position as president.
This country has now surpassed the old depression era , he has promised this and that , but we have become a nation of liars and cheats. He has taught us well , I believe it is his culture. I know it is his culture!

  14. I love the McDonalds on Nanticke Rd. where when you order and pay for your beverage they won't give you a cup until the food comes up.No one there could tell me other than it's their policy. Not sure if this is the only franchise that does this or not,I told them to kiss my eastern shore ass and haven't been back since.

  17. This is a business, repeat, a business. It exists to make money, period. If you don't like it, stay away. Or better yet, start your own business and let people decide what they want to pay for your products. See how long you last.

  18. You still patronize Mickey D's? How much do you weigh? I had a friend who stopped going there because they didn't have shopping carts! His heart blew up at 42.

Hang in there, friend, I'll see you on the other side in about 30 years!

  19. I have read all the comments and now I ask you to consider that you are poor (I mean Poor) and you live in the city (big city)...you are hungry and the only thing for miles is either a McDonalds or JaCK IN THE BOX. There are no other options and you are hungry. The little corner market does not have fruit and vegtables...just beer and lotto tickets. So you gotta eat..right? Oh and did I mention you are 12 years old and your parents are on crack? What chance do you have of being slim? What are your chances period? People here don't know what HARD is. My biggest complaint is that they are closing grocery stores here. Not a great selection on a budget...but there is a selection...unless you are 12 and mom and dad are on crack.

  20. If you spent as much time and energy working at a job instead of worrying about the complexities of the dollar menu you could probably afford the few pennies you feel you are being charged. Your letter would leave one to believe your really quite an experienced cheapskate. A pro like yourself would be better served clipping coupons and grocery shopping.
