Sequester: Is Your Airport On The Chopping Block?

Automatic, across-the-board cuts in federal spending will cause the delays, Transportation secretary says
WASHINGTON -- Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood warned Friday of massive delays in flights and the closing of 100 smaller air-traffic control towers as part of automatic spending cuts scheduled March 1.

Because of furloughs for air-traffic controllers, LaHood said flights from New York to San Francisco could be delayed 90 minutes. He says once airlines understand how flights are delayed, they will begin canceling flights.

He said the control towers at the 100 smallest airports will be closed, from a list including those in Boca Raton, Fla., Joplin, Mo., and Hilton Head, S.C.

"These are harmful cuts with real-world consequences that will cost jobs and hurt the economy," LaHood said from the White House briefing room.

Publishers Notes: Salisbury Airport is on the list.

  1. Do they still use the control tower at SBY?

Then why did President OBAMA propose the bill and sign it into law?
He is now campaigning against his own bill and authorization!
Obama simply is a neophyte politician that does not deserve to be President, for a myriad of reasons.

  3. So let it close. Perhaps then the Democrats that voted for Obama will have to take a taxi to Florida.

  4. Haha, I hope they close that hole.

  5. Shut it all down. Bring it all to a halt and force action in DC no more BS. Force our elected officials to do what they've been elected to do. We can't prolong the inevitable forever. Decrease spending, increase revenue, and start paying down our national debt. It has to be done. It will only be more imposible to do later.

  6. There will still be a concrete runway there, and people selling airline tickets! And no TSA to feel you up before you fly! This will be a lot better than it is now!

    There are no cuts!
If sequester happens, spending will still go UP next year

  8. drive to bwi, I do! f us_scare!
They do nothing for the community! they have reduced the workforce to unlicensed individuals so they could pay minimum wage! With one A&P coming behind them and signing for their work.
Do you really want to put your life in the hands of an enterprise that thinks so little of your safety?

  9. Every time you turn around the airport is getting taxpayer grants to build something but business doesnt increase, its just to spend money.

  10. If there is no airport, look for more large corporations to move out-of-area because their corporate executives will have no where to fly in to at all.

  11. They built a new runway at what cost? They had allegant airline come in town, they left? They don't have any sustainable business model without getting money from the state and feds. And is only because the beach exists. I know, Omalley should build windmills on the site, that will be the right move for the revenue they need! They can rely on wind and solar for the runway lights

  12. Way too many drones are using the SBY/Wicomico Airport for it to be closed. They've been flying at night a lot lately. The commercial part is of little use to the feds, but the runway will at least be kept in use,or at least a hundred yards or so of it.Really not even that for the vertical take off units.

  13. There are no spending cuts!!! All government departments will still receive more money than they did the previous year.

Government spending will still increase even if the sequester occurs. The sequester only reduces the amount of the automatice built-in increases.

The governement isn't spending any less money.

  14. the point here is that the government is trying to scare us all into giving in. there are no cuts only a slow down in the rate of growth. people need to wake up and find out the truth

  15. Why is no one jumping up and down screaming over the fact that Obama has not met his required budget submission in over four years? How can you argue about spending when you don't have a budget? Why has he not been fired for not doing his job? Someone needs to step up and confront this man directly.

  16. It will not close. This is a bunch of crap. These are cuts in additional spending not what is being spent now.
