Senate Panel Amends, Approves Gun Control Measure

Measure would ban assault weapons, strengthen handgun licensing laws

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —A Maryland Senate committee approves changes to a sweeping gun-control measure before sending it to the full Senate.

The Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee voted 7-4 to approve the bill after approving a change that would prohibit someone from owning a handgun if the person has been involuntarily committed for any duration for mental health reasons.

The committee approved the amendment backed by Gov. Martin O'Malley in a late-night voting session on Thursday. The bill is a top priority of the governor this session.

  3. gun control is doing nothing for the victims and the good people it is just making more victims. they need to have gang control.

  4. What relevance does "Gay Dad's" comment have with this post.

Anyways, of the 11 State Senators on the Judicial Committee, 4 of them are Baltimore Co. reps and 0 representing the Eastern Shore.

For those who oppose the Bill (SB281), I recommend keeping an eye on the Bill to see how the elected Senator and Delegates vote. Not only with this bill, but ALL bills that concern you. The election is next year and being educated on how your rep. votes will help you decide who to vote for in 2014.

  8. The government is wasting so much time inventing laws to take guns away from law abiding citizens all over this country, but not one elected official has mentioned taking guns away from the criminals who are committing crimes on innocent victims. It's time for you soft hearted liberals who voted for Obama and O'Malley to wake up before you and your innocent children are slaughtered.

  9. We have to stop the murdering of innocent people with guns. Lets make a law banning guns, the only true protection innocent people have from murder by guns. That will stop the murders....HOW? Liberals are idiots that need confrontation from citizens with common sense. If we do nothing our freedoms, even our means of self defense will be gone.

  10. 8:41 - am wondering why you say Mathias should be voted out regardless of how he votes?

  11. 8:41 Forget calling Mathias. He will only do what O'Malley tells him to do. He is a typical liberal Democrat and doesn't care about you or I, or the constitution. And, you can put Cane and Conway in the same playbook.

  12. I tend to believe what 10:00 is stating about Mathias is true. Although I am not a Democrat, I listened to what he had to say at Crisfield's 2010 Crab & Clam Bake and it looked like he and his supporters were holding a Pep Rally as he loudly gave a politically irrelevant BS rhetorical speech to his supporters. I'm surprised his supporters didn't shout at "HIP HIP HOORAY FOR JIM!" upon conclusion of his speech.

I have a STRONG feeling that Mathias is in the "back pocket" of many above him and acts as their rubber-stamping puppet who does as he is told instead of doing the right and honorable thing in favor of the citizens he represents. Keep an eye on his votes people!

  14. 12:14 So would you please E-mail him back and request that he make a public statement and post it on the MSM. Don't hold your breath.

  17. This 35 page bill is a violation of the Constitution in many areas. The 2nd Amendment reads, "ARMS" Any small arm of any caliber, nomenclature length, weight, and function would fall under this description.

It is absolutely imperative that become members of the NRA, if not aldready, and also begin meetings of like minded citizens in order to coordinate fund raising plans and court challenges to the law if it passes, all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary. We the people should not be intimidated, and now more than ever need to come together.

  18. I emailed him and asked him about the 281 Bill, and this was his answer. It leaves no doubt in my mind.

    Good morning,

I come from a family of hunters and gun owners and am proud to be a part of a community where safe and responsible gun ownership is a fact of everyday life. In the face of senseless violence, I believe that we can best protect our communities by continuing to focus on supporting existing programs and improving our methods for identifying and treating mental illnesses. Instead of creating new laws that restrict our 2nd Amendment rights, we must enforce the laws currently on our books. I have long been a supporter of our 2nd Amendment rights and will be voting against Senate Bill 281 should it or any similar bills come before me on the Senate floor.

Your effort in taking time to tell me of your thoughts is greatly appreciated. Please continue to keep in touch.

    Thank you,

    - Jim
