PLEASE, MR. IRETON: THAT’S NOT AN “ACCOMPLISHMENT”

In his latest campaign event, crudely disguised and promoted as a “state of the city” speech (which it wasn’t), Jim Ireton portrayed as a major accomplishment of his current term the City’s settlement of its lawsuit claim against several firms for badly designing and building Salisbury’s $60 Million plus new, but dysfunctional waste water treatment plant. In point of fact – never mentioned by Ireton or the Daily Times – the settlement amount was much less than 50 cents on the dollar, and a substantial part of the money was paid to the special legal counsel that the City retained because the former City Attorney could not handle the task, as well as legal fees of the latter.

As a result the City still needs many millions (and more than that so-called “surplus” of $16 Million that Ireton touts) to fix the WWTP to satisfy the state requirements. Can you guess where those bucks will come from?

This scenario may be something to brag about to like minded people in Rehobeth Beach, but not to Salisbury residents who now must pay to clean up the mess, along with the new “stormwater utility” tax that he wants to impose.

Although he isn’t responsible for the bad engineering, design and construction of the WWTP that occurred under Barrie Tilghman, who insisted on using the engineering firm, “O’Brien and Gere,” and its recommendations (for which it was paid millions by the City), Mr. Ireton is culpable for the debacle that has occurred on his watch. And he cannot take credit for the good riddance of the City officials who were involved in the design-build process for the WWTP.

Barrie T. decided to forgo seeking reelection, in which she would have been crushed at least a soundly as her stand-in compatriot and chief cheerleader during her tenure, Gary (“on time, under budget”) Comegys. John (“GI”) Jacobs, the former City Engineer, left for supposedly greener pastures elsewhere, and then there’s the saga of the former City Attorney – who Ireton kept on the WWTP case in court despite his involvement in the contracts with the engineering firm, which put a cap on the amount that the City could recover!

Mr. Ireton, like his role models in the state and federal governments, believes that political pandering of the sort that he sponsored at Holloway Hall, liberally laced with unsupported self-serving statements such as that exposed above, will mask his real record. Don’t be deceived – yet again -- by such duplicity.

  3. The very fact that the wwtp is Barries fault, and now Barrie has endorsed Day should tell voters all they need to know

  4. Barrie also had her husband write to the Daily Times to endorse Day. All in the family.

That WWTP has stuffed Paul Wiber's pockets full. Why would our city attorney cap liability of a $65,000,000 Waste Water Treatment Plant at $1,000,000? Was that in the best interest of the city taxpayer?

  5. The fact that Jake Day wholeheartedly supports Jim Ireton and does not hold Ireton accountable for anything speaks volumes. Instead, Jake Day who claims he will "work with everyone" has spent a great deal of time blasting the council for everything. How can he work well with the very people he is blasting? How can be a check and balance for the mayor when he is a rubber stamp for the mayor? He is a lot like Laura Mitchell who has spent more time promoting her buddy Jim Ireton, herself and her party cronies than doing the work she was elected to do.

Barrie Tilghman's husband has a letter in the Daily Slime today in support of Jake Day. He got a Tilghman Two-Fer.

  6. Was there anyone at this campaign event disguised as a State of the City Address.

I knew that was going to happen and I planned to go sit in the front row to make him uncomfortable, but changed my mind at the last minute.

I would really love to find out how many and who was there.

  10. What's his "stormwater utility" tax -- when and how much??

  11. This mayor lives in a dream world. He wants credit for things he had nothing to do with and blame his failure on others. He is straight out of the Obama book of deception.I think the good people of Salisbury are smart enough to read through this & vote him out.

  13. Yet another inaccurate and bias article published about Ireton in the Daily Times, who OBVIOUSLY favors him. UNBELIEVABLE!
The writer just published everything Ireton "claims" to be absolutely true without critiquing any of it. That unethical and WRONG and Joe's supporters need to comment on the article.

In his latest capital budget Ireton says that he wants to impose the new tax to raise about $19 Million PER YEAR - beginning after the election, of course. It would be imposed on property in the City of Salisbury.

You can bet that Day will support it if he is elected.

Just like Barrie did, Ireton made higher paid City employees attend -- the public works director, Chief Duncan, etc., and there were some liberals and socialists there too.

If you comment on the Daily Slime, don't be surprised if the City inspectors show up at your home or business the same or very next day.

Nothing has changes since Gannett canned the Bassett bunch.

  17. 10:43, 10:03 here - why is that!?
Is Salisbury being led in a "Communistic-type" manner by tyrannical dictators???
What the hell is going in this city!?

Can't you see that Ireton has simply followed in the footsteps of the person that he berated for years, Barrie Tilghman, with a touch of Lenin and Marx for flavor in his wiotches brew.

  24. Ireton and Mitchell aspire to a bigger stage-Democrats becoming one of the "ruling class" is about the best get rich quick schemes around. Even on a local level like Salisbury--Barrie T amd Mike Dunn have made a fortune having insider information and the ability to steer TIF money, and CIty water and sewer to their cronies. The Firehouse land made someone rich, best believe there was something in it for ole Barrie. Sickening, immoral corrupt fortune seekers--that is what our current Democrat politician is today. Somehow Salisbury has gotten extremely lucky and has several patriotic honest hardworking heroes on the City Council, and has someone like Joe willing to take on the malignancy that pervades this city--don't screw up your last chance Salisbury.

  27. Keeping Debbie Campbell on the council is critically important. They will do anything to defeat her. She needs our help now! Volunteer, contribute to her campaign, call for a sign. We need her more than ever!

  28. 2:37 -

Well said word for the wise to keep Ms. Campbell, who has diligently kept our taxes a low as possible under the tax-spend style of Barrie Tilghman and her successor, Jimmy boy(?) Ireton.

Jakey Day is an even worse liberal who believes in big government, steep taxes and over regulation. He will support the new "stormwater utility" that will pass if he is elected.

They should be back in the USSR from whence they came.

  29. I think a great idea would be for Jim & Joe to face off in a debate prior to the election with Salisbury's citizens being allowed to ask the candidates a few questions regarding important issues.
I think Joe would agree to such a debate/forum, but I have a strong feeling that Ireton would back down from such an event because he would rather avoid having to debate Joe, as well as having to answer questions of Salisbury's residents concerning pressing issues that exist in the city.

  30. I'm curious what stance Day has on the mayor's proposed $19,000,000 tax hike. He needs to answer that question if he's serious about protecting the taxpayers of Salisbury.

Not only did Jim Ireton lie to us about Wilber he promised to get rid of John Pick, Lore Chambers Allan Webster, Bill Gordy and Rick Hoppes.

Ireton jumped in bed with his enemies and as soon as he was sworn in at the GOB he praised the outgoing mayor and promised to name a road after Barrie Parsons Tilghman. We still have John Pick and Lore Chambers. He gave Lore Chambers a massive pay raise while city employees to 2 years of furloughs. He paid thousands of dollars so Lore Chambers could get a PhD while other city employees were denied educational benefits. Allan Webster worked out a deal with Jim Ireton so he could go out on disability and the disabled Chief of Police ran for Somerset County Sheriff. Bill Gordy left on his own and now Ireton is fighting the City Council over Richard Hoppes after he promised the firefighters he was getting rid of him.

Jim Ireton turned his back on his friends, supporters, allies and most important the citizens who voted for him. Is this unstable man who we want for our next mayor!

Vote Debbie Campbell and Joe Albero.

  34. We can not afford loosing Debbie. She has integrity, knowledge, experience and good ideas. She is not a rubber stamp! She is always fighting for us.

Day is financed by barry and her husband, by Mike Dunn - who is nesting to run for mayor in 2015. Money is running out, ha? They all want/need to go back to "making great deals" with the city. Business as usual.

    Vote Debbie for District 2.

As for District 1 - Jim supports Shanie (contributed to her campaign) - although I have seen only signs for Day in this district.

    Vote Debbie!
