Maine Trailer Tags Are Not Legal For Delaware Residents

Heavy Fines if Found in Violation

Dover
-- The Delaware State Police (DSP) and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are reminding Delaware residents with "T" tag trailers that the practice of getting them registered from the State of Maine as a cost-saving measure is a violation of Delaware Code. This practice also poses a safety risk to all motorists since trailers with Maine plates are assumed to be uninspected.

At any time on the roadways of Delaware one can most likely expect to see a disproportionate number of trailers from Maine that are being towed by Delaware registered vehicles. First State drivers may not understand this odd combination. The State of Maine allows any citizen from any state to register their trailers at an extremely low cost and in some cases without inspection.

Col. Nathaniel McQueen, Jr. of the Delaware State Police explained, "Delaware law requires that if you live in this state for 60 consecutive days you are required to register your vehicles and trailers in Delaware. The only exception to this law is those vehicles that are covered under the International Registration Plan (IRP) which are normally 18-wheeled tractor trailers."

Jennifer Cohan, Division of Motor Vehicles Director stated, "If you are not a tractor trailer owner/operator registered with IRP and you live in Delaware and you have your trailer registered in Maine, you are violating Delaware law."

The penalties for violating this section of the traffic code (Title 21 section 2102) include fines of no less than $400 nor more than $600 for the first offense; the penalty for each subsequent offense is not less than $800 nor more than $1,200 or imprisonment of not less than 10 days or more than 30 days.

In order to address this ongoing violation of Delaware code the DMV and the DSP are joining together to address this situation. Over the first few months of 2013 the agencies will work to educate impacted groups and remind them of the requirements. DSP and DMV do understand that there will be questions on the issue. Those with concerns are encouraged to call the DMV at 302-744-2535 for clarification.

  1. I think those fines would be very appropriate for those people who drive Escalades with Farm Truck tags!

    1. You might want to take a look at the 2013 Ford F650 XUV truck 11:04pm. They make Escalades look like tiny little pretend trucks.

    1. Yes. Delaware wants $52 year for a simple horse trailer whereas I do 2 yrs for $43 in Maine. And I do get a safety and brake inspection every 2 years.

  5. And you know it has nothing to do with whether a trailer is safe to operate. Its all about the state making revenue off the backs of hard working citizens. No wonder noone wants to vote just to put more crooks in office.

  6. What if you are a Delaware owner/operator who is given a load to back haul from Maine back to North Carolina? It's not his trailer! It's work! This the stupidest law I've heard of!

  7. 6:48, the article says that trailers covered under IRP are exempt and these vehicles are usually tractor trailers. Would this cover you?

Are you kidding me? Fees more reasonable in Delaware?
Tags and registrations are A LOT cheaper in Delaware than in Maryland.
A 2 year (car) tag in Maryland is $180.00. I just renewed my Delaware tags for $80.00 for 2 years!
Oh, and by the way, Delaware has cheaper fees AND our state has money! Maryland has fee after fee that is high and Maryland has NO money!

  10. I'm in the process of moving my vehicles to FL registrations...cheaper and I can still use Maine trailer tags in MD with FL license plate.

  11. Well, Del and Maryand should lower the trailer tag fees to 21.00 a year like Maine instead of 180.00.Why can Maine be the taxpayers friend and not here?

  12. agreed... Crack down on all the DE tags in this area. Ever notice that everyone who lives in the Salisbury ghetto & who has a car has DE tags?? Meanwhile, honest people are paying higher and higher registration fees.

  13. You have to have a De. address to tag your car in that state. If you live in Md. your cars have to be tagged in Md. If you move here to Md. from another state, you have a certain amount of time to tag your car in Md. or be fined !

  14. I agree with the first comment,I get sick of seeing luxury trucks with "farm"tags when they know damn well they are not using a brand new Navigator or decked out F-350 to "farm" anything.

It may not matter if the owner of the truck is also an owner of a farm.

I'm not up to speed on that particular law but it could very well be legal.
