Joe, I am not sure if you are aware of the changes in traffic pattern at the Salisbury Airport. I took my daughter in for a flight out on Thursday and there are cement barriers up to prevent cars and passengers from getting close to the doors. There are also red signs on the outer lane threatening tickets and towing away for any unoccupied vehicles. My guess is that this in not a safety issue since in my many trips to the terminal parking under the roof and near the doors has never been a problem. What I suspect is they want us, even for the short time it takes to pick up or drop off a passenger, to park in the lot and pay the fee. If I am correct, it is another fee that is just a tax. We are over-taxed, over-legislated, and over-regulated. Now we are also over inconvenienced, again!!!!!
There are tons of attempts to blow up little airports that are thwarted every day. So until they can microwave us for our own safety, we have to walk a little further.
Allegiant has bigger planes, more people checking in per flight. The terminal and it's parking are stretched to capacity so that's the reason for the parking control.
WELL THE ONLY THING I CAN SUGGEST WOULD BE FOR YOU TO CALL THE AIRPORT AND ACTUALLY ASK THEM YOURSELF WHY THEY ARE DOING THIS. Allegient is the LARGE airplace that comes in on Thursday & Sundays and for safety reasons, Allegient/TSA requires the Salisbury Airport to do this in order to land. Before you assume the answer, find out the facts...
I flew in to the Salisbury airport last Thursday night and had no problems. My friend picked me up right in front of the door. And even if you do park in the lot, the first half hour is free.
Too bad allegiant is leaving - best thing ever happen to that airport - direct flight to Florida, nonstop, now we have to go back to the stop in Charlotte, then an hour or so later on to Florida - Why can't US Air just have a nonstop to Florida.
AlleGiant isn't such a great deal anyway. By the time you pay for the add ons, you could've flown when you wanted to, AND to where you wanted to. I just priced USAirways against SW Air to Tampa, and USAirways was cheaper without having to drive to BWI even with the additional baggage fees. When you see a big company advertising a lot all of a sudden (SW Air) you better be watching your wallet. They aren't the deal they used to be,
The cement barriers and signs are not new to the Salisbury Airport. I drive past them every weekday (and many times on the weekend) as I leave work.
After 9-11 the barriers were set up so people could not park next to the terminal. These days the barriers are used when there is a high security alert or there is some other problem where they need to reduce the amount of traffic near the terminal. I am not sure if they use the barriers when there are Alligent flights going in and out.
The red and white signs were posted after 9-11 and have been there ever since. They are very similar to signs I have seen at other airports all over the country. They are simply a reminder that the area is a drop off & pick up area for passagers an their luggage not a parking lot. And just like any other "NO PARKING ZONE" your vehicle may be towed if you choose to park there.
You may have also seen the barriers near the Piedmont Airlines office building and maintenance hangers. They are making some long over due repairs to those buildings. The barriers and/or orange cones are there for safety reasons.
I would just as soon drive to Fl as take Useless Air again. They cancel flights when they cant fill them and the hell with your plans. and with cost hikes just announced there will be plenty more cancellations.
Has anyone ever asked why this airport don't charge takeoff or landing fees to USAIR ? Yup, we taxpayer foot the bill so that the county can brag they got an airline dedicated to little ole Salisbury! Think of how that tax money could be used for other things instead of lining the pockets of USAIR!

Wait.... I thought those lanes were for PICK UP or DROP OFF, not PARKING. It has always bothered me to see unattended cars sitting there- you would NEVER see untattended cars allowed near the doors at any other airport. for many reasons not the least of which is traffic congestion and Terrorism Safety. in fact, the 30 minute free parking grace period is ALSO unheard of at any other airport I have ever visited. and 30 minutes free at any REAL airport would be useless anyway, since it would take that long just to walk to the terminal and back in most places. stop being lazy, park in the lot and pay the $2 or so it will cost for about an hour.

ReplyDeleteTSA requirements while Allegiant jet is on ramp. It's only on Thursday and Sunday, and after January 5, it will be no more.
