Mayor Meehan: Next Month’s Election ‘About Character’

OCEAN CITY -- While acknowledging his last term has been the most difficult of his 27-year political career, Mayor Rick Meehan pointed to his commitment to Ocean City as why he wants to continue to serve.

Meehan has been mayor since 2006, but the Nov. 6 election will be the first time he has been challenged for his mayoral seat, thanks to Nicholas Campagnoli’s filing. He said Tuesday the fact he is contested will have no bearing on how he campaigns for re-election.

In an extensive interview this week, Meehan, who was first elected as a councilman in 1985 and served 14 years as council president, explained what it was like being city manager for 10 months; why he will not vote for the general employees’ union effort; gave specific examples of how the city cut spending prior to the advent of the current council majority; and reflected on his specific concerns about government under the council majority’s leadership.

Here’s a look at the conversation:

  1. I'm not sure I'm liking the part where he mentions the character of council members. Just because they have differing views on ways of governing and their priorities are different doesn't have anything to do with character.
Also enough already lamenting over Dennis Dare. The newspaper can't seem to quit dwelling on this. If any questions about this are to be asked it should be why some council members felt compelled to walk out on Adkins when he went to interview for the job. That's the real and only story. Any other mention is a non issue and makes no difference.

  2. OC is overpriced in every respect and takes advantage of the valued tourist they say the like so much. Under meehan, record highs in user fees, 100+ employees making in excess of $100k for four months work, and the ticking time bomb of unfunded pensions that the taxpayers are told little about. if that is the road that you want, meehan is your man!

  3. The bottom line OC is headed for the financial cliff and the spending has to be reigned in. Some OC officials think if they ignore this no one will know. But the voters and residents do know. The stuff's going to hit the fan with the next property assessments.

  4. The mayor is a realtor first and foremost. He didn't get rich in public service, he did it in real estate. During his lengthy public service, developers could not level two- and three-story buildings quickly enough, to be replaced with the glut of condominiums that exists now. He will remain in public service until the next building boom, when he and the other realtors in various positions will rubber-stamp every mega-project that is proposed. He and his realtor girlfriend will make tons of money, then he will retire from both professions. Imagine OC as a sheer vertical cliff of condominiums all along the ocean, the bays, and Coastal Highway. That, I believe, is his vision of the town and his game plan.
