Sherwood Used Cars
Hey Joe,
Wanted to share my displeasure with a recent used car buying experience with
Sherwood in Salisbury.
The long and short I bought a decent used Volkswagen last week. I took it home, the very next day found out there was a rattle in the vehicle when at idle. It took me three days to get the salesman to return my calls and schedule it to get looked at. I finally got an appointment to take it in this morning, after about an hour and a half they said they found a loose fuel line rubbing against the floorboard and needed to put a new rubber insulator on it. So I head over to the person at the service desk who politely told me what the problem was, how it was corrected and oh by the way, even though you bought this car for $16,000 last week we would like $196 for two hours worth of labor and a $3 part. Needless to say I was furious, I spent well over an hour being bounced back and forth between the salesman that I purchased it from, the service manager, the used car manager and the like... essentially they said they couldn't do anything about it because the extended warranty I purchased doesn't cover rattles and the rattle wasn't found before I signed the dotted line. I am in the customer service business, I'd like to think that for an hour or so worth of my time and a $3 part I'd suck it up for the boat load of money I just made from this same guy last week. Instead Sherwood decided to screw me on this one. Just thought I would share my experience with the rest of the consumers on Delmarva who may or may not be in the market for a new vehicle any time soon. Buyer beware.... find all your problems and get them fixed before you sign on that dotted line because once you're out the door, you're dead to them.

ReplyDeleteI inquired about a car online that was to be a Christmas gift for my husband. My name and phone number were the only listed on the inquiry. The salesman called my husband (imagine he found his number from past service records) to talk about the car. They will never see another of our family members walk through their doors and we have quite a tribe!!!!

You would think that these car Creeps would want to be nice to their customers considering most consumers will go to the same company/salesman over and over again if they had a pleasurable experience.... I would contact the better business bureau about this shady sales team.

ReplyDeleteThat wasn't a rattle, it was a loose fuel line causing a rattle. The rattle was only the symptom.

You're right. You did get screwed.
A good example of the power of on-line media; as more consumer's share both negative and positive experiences with others, perhaps businesses will realize they don't operate within a bubble, one customer at a time.
ReplyDeleteI have also recently had issues with Sherwood as well. It seems to me when they moved into one building they have done nothing but go down. The service department is horrible now.
ReplyDeleteI had a bad experience with Sherwood in October when, despite being a current customer, having excellent credit, references, employment history, etc. and showing up at age 46 in suit and tie, being told I could not drive the vehicle to Cambridge to show my wife - that it was "too far" to drive (A USED CAR?????). Needless to say I bought a car at Pohanka. A week later the salesperson at Sherwood emailed me to ask if I had thought anymore about the car? I emailed him back that since he wouldn't let me drive it home to show my wife, I didn't feel his dealership was worthy of my business and I have been busy the past week telling everyone that. Hummmm, he never responded to my return email.......LOL, wonder why. What a bunch of losers.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain!!! Buyer beware at Courtesy in Salisbury also. My vehicle gave me issues. Had it towed many times. 1st time, I was suckered and paid. 2nd time, I took it to someone else. 3rd time, took it to someone else and called the Courtesy about the POS they sold me. The service managment said, they are very sorry that the car had so many issue. I talked to the manager of Courtesty. He said the vehicle is between 5 to 8 years old with 63,000 miles on it and I should come take a look at a few of their cars for a trade in. WHY the heck would I even go back to a dealership where I bought a car that gave me nothing but trouble, no help and dumped so much money into? Where do ppl get the BALLS? They have no shame in what they are doing or asking. SCAM

ReplyDeleteDon't you all remember years ago when Salisbury was on national news for having one of the largest scams with dealerships when it came to their service departments? They all over charge for parts and labor then for toppers the suggest service you don't need.
ReplyDeleteI've found you pretty much have to go to the western shore to find decent prices and customer service from auto dealerships. All the local ones seem to fall into the category of "stealership" instead of dealership in my experiences.
ReplyDeleteMy wife went there to buy a minivan. The salesman told her he would only talk to me. He refused to even tell her how much he'd sell the van for without me being there. BTW, My wife is a director in charge of two departments and >150 people. She makes 3x the money I do. We bought the van from Preston.

ReplyDeleteWe went there last week to look at a car we saw on their website and the used car manager was a complete jerk! He was very rude and when my husband was trying to talk to him he wouldn't even look at him. He was fiddling with a sign or something. Needless to say we left there and they will not be getting our business!
ReplyDeleteI've bought many used cars from Sherwood since 1988 when they were in Berlin. I have always found them to stand behind every one of them; they're the only place I would buy a vehicle. We're probably only hearing one side of the story!
ReplyDeleteBeware of the shysters that Sherwood employees....one of the salesman came from Saturn after they closed and I ran into him again at Sherwood when I was just perusing the lot. This man sold me a used veh which I love but did not pay off my trade in for 4 months leaving the finance company to call me endlessly wanting to know where there payment was. Filed a complaint with BBB and the head office...I wish I could remember his name but be careful. He was shady and I caught him in several lies. He was annoyed with me because I was persistant and wouldnt let it go. Needless to say he didnt recognize me after 5 years so I just asked "Did u used to work at Saturn?" When he said yes, I told him I wouldnt get a car from him if they were giving it away.
ReplyDeleteI bought a used Civic from them about two years ago. It, too, had a rattle I discovered after taking it home. However, my experience was different, in that they found the problem, fixed it and sent me on my way without a bill. I hope you can work something out with them.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't know why anyone would pay $16K for a used VW when you can do better on a new car. It only cost me $15K for a new Nissan Sentra in 2008 that was fully equipped and it came with a 100k mile warranty.

ReplyDeleteI bought a vehilce from the fine people at Pohanka, had a similar problem where there was an issue with the pre-owned vehicle I had just purchased. They went out of their way to make sure the problem was quickly resolved and since then I've purchased 4 more vehicles from them. IMO, it's the only place to buy.
ReplyDeleteSherwood sucks I bought a F150 pickup years ago what a peice of crap it was and the service dept was the worst.
ReplyDeleteThat is extremely unfortunate. The dealership should have eaten those parts and labor costs without question given the purchase date.

I've never found an honest car dealer service dept. After being burned a few times similar to the one detailed here (I must be a slow learner) I've determined the solution is to find a good mechanic and NEVER take my car to a dealer.
ReplyDeleteIf it is for warranty work, I always ask about the warranty, and I say, "If there is any money involved I want to be notified before you do that work." If I am notified, I tell them they are no authorized to do that work, then I take it to the mechanic of my choice (and there are some good, honest, and affordable ones out there--but none of them are at car dealers).
I had the displeasure of dealing with Sherwood Ford. Their liquidation sale was a major scam. I will never deal with that business ever again. Luckily, they didn't get my money!!
ReplyDeletei experienced the same thing about 3 years ago, also a volkswagen. the salesman did nothing to help me. The car was under manufacturer warranty so i was able to have it resolved through the volkswagen dealership in dover, no thanks to the staff at sherwood, who could have cared less. after getting the runaround for weeks the salesman calls to see if we are gonna let them fix the car and when i tell him volkswagen is taking care of it he was offended and asking why i didnt call him first to tell him we were going directly to volkswagen. well, duh! never again.
ReplyDeleteA couple of years ago, I took my vehicle there for warranty work, as they were closer then the dealer I bought it from. When I got the vehicle back two days later, they had placed their own tag bracket on it and dealership logo on the trunk lip. I was furious, contacted them to find out who did it as I wanted to press charges. They told me they did not know which service person worked on the vehicle and the police said it was so minor they were not getting involved. I never went back, I take my car out of my way now to Pittsville Motors. They are a class act.
ReplyDeleteI think something as serious as a loose fuel line should have been found and corrected during the inspection process. And since that is not the case then maybe fix the problem free of charge and with out telling you that the problem was a fuel line. I personaly will never do business with them from your experience. My first two cars came from them when they were in Berlin. Glad I never had much service work done. And for two hours labor to install a rubber insulator is really over priced, it would take any moron only a half an hour and could be done in my driveway.
ReplyDeleteThat's nothing!!! We bought a new truck from Preston Ford. 6 weeks after it was titled the called us over and over again harrassing us, cursing us, and insisted we owed them $3,000 more than we agreed on and paid for the truck.
ReplyDeleteI went to work on a Friday. I had recently purchased the car from Sherwood. I was going on away that weekend. My car alarm started going off at my place of employment for no reason every 15 minutes. I called Sherwood and asked them if they could look at it. The rude a$$hole on the phone told me that it would have to wait until Monday. So I said ok I will bring it over to your parking lot and let it ring every 15 minutes, but I am leaving at noon on a trip. I want a loaner car. So I went over there and parked the car. While I was arguing with the service department, the stupid thing started going off. Needless to say they took it in and repaired it. I still had to pay for labor. There are so many things that happened with that dealership. Only piece of sh!t car I have ever owned. They lost me as a customer.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of where you bought the vehicle, you should not have had to pay for an extended warranty from a reputable used car dealer.
ReplyDeleteThere should have been a bumper to bumper warranty on the vehicle for at least 30 days.
You got screwed from the get to by having to purchase the "extended" warranty.
If there was no regular warranty offered on the car, you need to call MVA Dealer Services and complain to them. Calling the Salisbury office will do you no good though, you have to call Glen Burnie.
There are rules that every used car dealer has to follow. Calling them might just get you some satisfaction.
I was in the market for a small truck a few years back and stopped in there to look at some Rangers. The sales guy asked me what my boyfriend/husband wanted it for and what HE would be using it for, etc. When i told him the vehicle was for me, he tried very intently to sell me some crappy little car (Focus or something). Haven't been back since.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I purchased a new Chrysler from Sherwood, Brought it back 2 weeks later to have warranty work done on the rear passenger door..I thought everything was fine. It was summertime and we were having a lot of rain..didn't think much of this.. I started noticing a horrible moldy smell in my car. WHile im searching my car I notice that the floor under the front passenger seat is completely soaked! The water was pooling under the seat and mold was forming on the part of the carpet that was dry. I called Sherwood to have it looked at,(I thought maybe my sunroof was leaking). I bring the car in so they can look at it. They tell me that the tech who had done my warranty work previously did not properly seal the door channel and that's what was causing the leaking. All they did was fix the door & dry out my carpet! No offer to replace the moldy carpet! When i demanded that the carpet be replaced..as this was not my fault, they told me they would have to contact their corporate offices and MAYBE they would approve it. I never heard anything back from them...so I went to Pohanka and traded the car in for a new Nissan. Pohanka is great & their service is Awesome. I locked my keys in the Nissan at the fruitland walmart..one time & call the svc department and they cut me a key and one of the sales people drove it down to me so I could get into my car!!! Sherwood would have NEVER done that for me. (sorry the story was so long)
ReplyDeleteI had a couple of bad experiences with Sherwood in the past when we dealt with their Berlin location. Mr. Rodgers should look into having some mystery shoppers, but I guess there is no mystery they are just not the type of business you want to deal with... poor attitudes and no follow through. We were so turned off with our "non-caring" salesman a couple of months back that we went to Pohanka and Magee and bought 2 vehicles the same day! What losers!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I went to purchase a used cadillac at a local dealership. We were filling out the paperwork when my husband noticed the credit manager shaking his head NO. He saw this in a reflection in the window. We went in to see the credit manager he ask where we wanted to finance. We had already cleared it thru the manager of the bank and we told him the manager said just call him with the information on what the vehicle was and the VIN number. His jaw hit the floor. I told him dont judge a book by its cover! Just because we wore blue jeans and a t shirt didnt mean we couldnt afford anything we wanted.
ReplyDeleteThey are a bunch of Shysters and there is no customer service in their vocabulary. To top it off their service department are just there to collect a check, not reqiuired to fix anything. I had a new Taurus that had a terrible rattle in the rear end. After 10 times in the service department it still was rattling 4 years later when I sold it.

We went shopping for a Suburban for business purposes at Price Buick here in salisbury. We wanted a two wheel drive. We were told they only made a four wheel drive and made no effort to look for one. We went to First state in Georgetown, del. they had probally a dozen different colors, four wheel drive, two wheel drive, leather, no leather they had it all. We bought it there anad have been very happy with them. We took the vehicle to price and said this is what we were looking for..i guess only del. had them???

I took my van to sherwood a few years back-- I had an appointment, but the service manager lied to me and it took days to get them to work on it.
ReplyDeleteI will NEVER go back there- nor to Pittsville-- more lies/service manager foolishness. After brakework, my front wheel locked up 1 mile down the road.
I now take all my service work to Delmar Auto Center. Much cheaper, and great work.
NO MORE DEALERSHIP SERVICE. It's a ripoff.
3:00 sadly that is no longer the case. I bought a car from the Berlin site and noticed over the past 8 years how much less educated, less welldressed, less mannerly, and how much less Sherwood cares anymore. Go to Pohanka, you won't regret it.

ReplyDeleteI was out looking for a chevy taho or suburban at courtesy chevrolet. I, a female, was told they didnt have one and didnt know where they could get one. I bought one out of state had it lettered and parked it on their lot while I went "shopping" on their lot. ofcourse I didnt see anyhing I wanted. (I already had it) These people need come down off their hi houses and talk with people. All customers dont come in suites/ties. They might be one of those 10 cent millionaires. Ill take the working person any day. Farmers, watermen, janitors in work clothes.

ReplyDeleteI had the same experience as a female. I was going to write a check for the full amount(no financing needed) and the finance person not only demanded that my then husband be there even though it was my vehicle and my check.
I told him to pack sand.
I bought a wonderful used car from First State in (or near) Georgetown, DE. Great salesman, no pressure, honest. Will buy from there again. Five years later, not one single problem.

ReplyDeleteI have purchased six vehicles from Sherwood Ford over the past several years and had a good experience , both with sales and service.I have however discovered that my favorite salesperson is now at Pittsville. That may influence my next vehicle purchase.You know the old saying "Some people can't be pleased if you hung em with a new rope"
ReplyDeleteThe last car we bought in Salisbury came from Cavanaugh Ford. They stood behind their warranty. The next two vehicles we bought were from Preston and neither time did we have any problem with work being done at no cost to us.
ReplyDeleteSherwood, when they were in Berlin tried to sell my son a POS van thankfully he asked me to stop and look at it before he signed the papers. Needless to say, the salesman was a first class liar and my son never bought from them.
I had a bad experience at Sherwood twice. Everytime I went for an oil change, they seemed to find something else that "needed" to be done. One senser was $400. I didn't get the work done and all was well. Three years later, I sold the car. Another time they told me my brakes needed replacing immediately. I took it to another place, and was told I had another 15,000+ to go before replacement. Let's face it, service is where they make the big bucks if you don't keep your eyes wide open.
ReplyDeleteThus far, I have a good experience with Sherwood. I have purchased three vehicles from them over the last couple of years. However, I have been waiting on some recall parts since December 12th, and they are still on back order as of today.
ReplyDeleteSherwood Collision Center has also been excellent in body repairs and service.
Your post will surely cause me to be a little apprehensive and cautious in the future. It remains to be seen as to how the back ordered parts will turn out.
This does not surprise me one bit! I have heard nothing but bad about Sherwood, I called the owner (Bruce Rogers) twice before I took my business elsewhere, he never called me back.
ReplyDeleteSounds like to me you are the idiot, anyone who would pay $16,000for a used VW from a Ford dealer knowing that they would not carry parts for it. And you bought a USED car. If you wanted it covered bumper to bumper you should have bought a new one.

I went to Sherwood several years ago and even though I made $700 a week they turned me down for a used car based on my credit.....I went down the street to Vic Gues lot and Ray had me approved within an hour.A few months later my van(which had NO warranty) had an issue with the power steering,and evewn though they didnt owe me squat,they ate the labor and only charged me for parts.I have bought 2 used vehicles from them and will do so in the future.Why do any of you people go to a dealership anyway for a used car?Do you WANT to get screwed?
ReplyDeleteeverybody has a story , i have bought 2 cars from them in the last 4 years, and the sales person was great , he did what he said each time, i have never had service there that i can remember, but i did read the sherwood response. and i have had problems with that d--t b-g, so if he was involved its possible your story is true, but hats off to my salesman L.J. your the best.
ReplyDeleteI thought even used cars had to have a 30 day warranty on them. I had problems with Pittsville, but no problems with Cavanaugh (sp) or Frederick Ford in Seaford.
ReplyDeleteI used to work at Sherwood and know for a fact they are crooks. When they work on newer model cars that are out of warranty they charge the customer and keep the parts. After that they find the same model of a car in warranty and file a warranty claim and get paid twice for parts and labor. You talk about a scam. That needs to be investigated.
ReplyDeleteWE have just recently been dealing with a truly wonderful and pleasant salesman (Lance)at Pohanka Mazda. He is so very helpful and personable to work with. We started at Sherwood and were completely unimpressed with their prices. We showed them 2 pages of the same used vehicle (year, approx. mileage and amenities) that started out $2500 less than their "best price deal"! Then they just kept calling to see when we could come in to work with them. We explained we had no problem driving 60 miles to Annapolis. Of course, once we went across the street.....they lost out completely!

a$$holes broke the front tag bracket off my dodge when in for service. they didnt fix it and I've never been back. They just never seemed to grasp the whole customer service thing.
ReplyDeleteI have bought vehicles from them with no such problems. The last being a used SUV that the fuel pump failed on after having it over 5 months. I paid over $30k for this truck and wanted my moneys worth. They had no problem splitting the cost with me. Sometimes these things happen, and how you handle yourself plays a big part in how you are treated. It also helps to have an established relationship with your dealer.
ReplyDeleteI have a lease plan vehicle and refuse to take this to Sherwood. I had a problem with the ignition and they told me there was not a problem and they coldn't fix it, after it was towed in. I now take my car to Pittsville Ford. Maybe 15 minutes farther away but worth the time. They couldn't bend over backwards enough to make sure I was taken care of.

ReplyDeleteWe are from the eastern shore of Virginia, but went car browsing while on a shopping trip one weekend to lower Delaware. We saw something we liked at Hertrich in Seaford, a used Buick LaCrosse. They were very nice to work with treated us so well, we bought the car. About three weeks later we noticed a leak around the rooftop antenna. We called and they told us to bring it back or take it to a GM dealer nearby to be fixed. We ended up taking it back to them and all was fixed no questions and no charge. Would suggest Hertrich (Seaford)to my friends.

I thought this was about Sherwood? Why the comments about Price and Courtesy. It seems to me like most of you want something for nothing. If they did all of their repairs for free the way you want they would be out of business. And considering their service department is always booked it must be that the only people who have a problem with them are the people in here complaining. What do you expect? A car is a machine, new or used you shouldn't buy it if you can't afford to fix it, repairs are going to need to be made. And Vic Gue? You have got to be kidding me! I hope you got the car fax report!
ReplyDeleteI just left Sherwood (literally just left there), bought yet another vehicle from them, 7 in the past 3 years. I have had nothing but good dealings with them. They have put my vehicles in the schedule with no notice and had them done in a timely manner. I have several vehicles on the road daily and it is difficult to get them in for service, Any chance I see a window of opportunity to get one in around its service time they never fail to get it done. The colliision shop is the best around as well. I bought a car from Pohanka a few years ago, it was used but basically new.It was a newer style Volkswagon, I had nothing but problems with it, they couldn't fix it. They would have it for days on end, I would call to get a status because they would never call me to give me one. Keep in mind they never offered me anything to drive. One day while on the road "old 13 in Delmar" I see my car at a local Volkswagon shop. I pull in to find out it had been there for the 2 and half weeks that Pohanka "had it" in their service shop. If you can't fix it why in the world would you sell it? They are absolutely horrible. I must also say that I will never buy a vehicle from Courtesy either, have had a bad experience with them as well. Hands down, I rank Price Buick and Sherwood the best around.
ReplyDeleteI will have to agree with the post at 7:32 PM. Pittsville folks are great people. I saw in the paper that KC Colgan just moved from Sherwood to Pittsville. I am not sure why but to work for the same Sherwood people for 20 some years and now leave? Something must have changed his opinion of them.
ReplyDeleteI will continue to take my vehicles to Pittsville. Even though I pay cash for my vehicles they still treat me like everyone else who buys and has service done.

ReplyDeleteIf Pohanka took your Volkswagon to the garage on old Rt13 in Delmar, u should know that the garage they took it to is the best VW shop on the Eastern Shore.So you should have been happy they took it to the best around,even if they couldnt correct the problem.Cars are machines,they do break an sometimes it is hard to find the problem,but im sure you are perfect at what u do for a living.
Very poor managers: I attempted to trade in a Chrysler on a new Chrysler two years ago. They were trying to rip me off on the trade. I overheard the manager and the salesman in their office saying I was a liar and that my car had been wrecked when it had not. They could not do the deal so I left and went to Floyd Megee in Georgetown. Not only did they give me full value price on my trade, but they bought the car I wanted at Sherwood and sold it to me cheaper then Sherwood would even consider. The general manager called me two weeks later to ask me about my expierience and I told that I did buy their car from Megee after Megee bought it from them and sold it to me for a better deal. She was furious. Here is the best part, she was a friend of the family. If she would allow her employees to rape a friend what are they doing to strangers.
ReplyDeleteI bought a new car from the Saturn Dealership in Delmar that closed down and we always took it there for service. Great people, and no hassle, just gave you what you asked for and never tried to push anything off on you.

ReplyDeleteIt sucks dealing with people who could be out of work if it was not for their customers and they do not care about them. Goes to show you why the auto industry is 85% owned by the US Government. Hopefully, these bastards will get a taste of their own.

ReplyDeleteKC is a crook. They were giving away luggage back in the day with purchases of certain new vehicles. The buyers weren't getting their luggage because it was showing up at KC's house. I'm not making this up.

ReplyDeleteI have never seen someone fight over how much they LOVE a certain dealer, unless they are like Hank Hill(actually believeing the salesman is looking out for him). We all know how they make their money. Why dont you go cry to Macys why you pay $50 for a tshirt that Macys only paid $4 for? its called BUSINESS!
ReplyDeleteId like to see some of these crybabys try and run a business of their own!!! It would be a rude awakening to see how much you have to make on a product to cover the MANY costs involved with obtaining, maintaining, and keeping a current stock; wages paid to employees; maintaining a place of business; ungodly amounts of taxes, surcharges, taxes on taxes, and taxes on those taxes... I could keep on going but point made IS you CANNOT give product/service away. Although I believe there are situations that constitute special treatment, but I gaurentee you that The fire marshall assistant guy and many many others have given breaks to their friends ect and i promise you they have made up that lost money on a unsuspecting customer(which i do not practice or condone), but this is a reality. this world is a 'you scratch my back ill scrath yours' world, and i bet that guy whining just hasnt scratched the right back, or has upset the wrong person with his obviously bent attitude. KARMA FOR THE WIN!!!

ReplyDeleteIf I just made up a story of X dealer screwed me there would be just as many posts about "same thing happened to me" so take it with a grain of salt. If you dont goto a certain place when you are shopping for a car then it is just your loss to compare prices.
Instead of buying used luxury, be realistic and buy a new kia or something for the same price, unless you have a quickly deflating ego that must be filled !
My trusted mechanic at Delaware Tire recommended that I take my car to the dealer for something they could not fix. I did so reluctantly. Paul, the Mechanic (use that term loosely)said the car was in desperate need of a tune up...my filters were filthy and spark plugs were original. I then told him that I had just had a tune up 3 days prior. Paul said insinuated that my mechanic ripped me off. I took the car back to my mechanic and together he showed me brand new filters and spark plugs. I immediately called Sherwood and was put through to customer service where they backed up Paul. How many other unsuspecting people do they rip off with their service?
ReplyDeleteyou know its easy for one person who has had a bad day ruin it for everyone else. people bad mouth former employees of sherwood ford but I dont see them doing any better. as far as the comments about the service department at sherwood if you can do any better than come on you can use my tools any day.Day in and day out we are handed repair orders where the customer has taken the car to a freinds shop or some fly by night shop and have spent a few hundred dollars and nothing has been fixed. You bring it to me I diag. your concern and for less than a hundred dollars its fixed but its always the dealerships fault. between 4 people in service department there is over 100yrs experience, people on this blog class us crooks think again no one is a miracle worker its a shame you cant bad mouth people to their face you have to do it behind a computer
ReplyDeletei bought a car from sherwood in a haste because my old car went up anyways bottom line i am paying 300 a month for a kia spectra anyways the sales manager and finace manager were eventually fired and from my understanding have pending law suits against them mind u this is back in 2005

ReplyDeleteI think that is unfair, they should give you warranty upon purchasing the car. That $196 dollars is still big for the repair right. Try to talk to the salesman and told him your concerns.
