POCOMOKE Mayor McDermott Tells Tattler, Commissioner Cowger & Councilman Clarke to Back Down… All Is Well in Pocomoke City We Have It Under Control…

Talk about out of control and jumping the gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!Whew!

For the record, Mr. Burke, Comm. Cowger, and Councilman Clarke,

The recent homicide of Mr. Niblett did not occur in the City limits and, as such, is being investigated by the Sheriff's Office/State Police.

The recent homicide of Ms. Wojcik, likewise, ocurred outside of the city (actually beginning in Somerset County) and, as such, was investigated by the Sheriff's Office/State Police.

The Pocomoke Police Department placed a detective in the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation on January 1st of this year. Since this was done, two significant crimes ocurring inside the city have been solved: Major Theft from Walmart over $20,000.00-arrest made; Armed Robbery at the Duck Inn-Arrest made within three hours of event.

In return, the bureau has been greatly assisted by Pocomoke Police in the Wojcik homicide case, as well as the current homicide investigation of Mr. Niblett.

Pocomoke City has not had a homicide in the corporate limits for many years (for which we should all be thankful).

Your local police work alongside of the members of the bureau as well as other state and federal agencies while investigating various criminal matters. Our record against criminals is excellent. The homicide rate in Worcester County is one of the lowest in the state and averages less than three per year. We have had years with no homicides in the county, and years with multiple homicides in the county.

Commissioner Cowger has his job to do for Worcester County, and I have my job to do for the citizens of Pocomoke City. While my phone is always on, I see nothing productive about pitting government against government. I also do not believe this city should be held responsible for acts occuring outside of our corporate limits.

The Pocomoke Mayor and Council are directly responsible for public safety funding for our corporate residents and the overall direction that funding takes.

Commissioner Cowger is directly responsible, with the other Commissioners, for the public safety funding for those living in Worcester County, and particularly the non incorporated areas.

Can we have a little intellectual honesty in this discussion, or should Pocomoke City be blamed for the Ocean City bridge closure too?

Mayor Mike McDermott

  2. Why would you want to turn away help with the long term coruption that cripples your city? Some of that coruption starting to shine like gold?

  3. Sounds like a smart-a$$ mayor to me - kind of like the one we have in Salisbury. Why in the world wouldn't you want everyone working on these cases - afraid of what else some investigation might turn up? Shame on you McDernutt.

  4. what about the attempted car-jacking at Wal-Mart? Was that outside the city limits too?
Oh wait, I forgot, that couldn't of happened. It never showed up on the crime log the pcpd put out.
Wonder what else didn't show up?

  5. Mr. Mayor,

Judy and Nib may have been killed outside the ‘incorporated’ city limits of Pocomoke but I will bet my bottom dollar that the killers all live within city limits.

You can’t tell me that all of the folks that live on By-Pass or Cedar Hall don’t consider themselves Pocomoke Citizens. No not ‘Incorporated’ Citizens but Pocomoke Citizens nonetheless.

I am thankful that Commissioner Cowger and Councilman Clarke are calling for help. There is a huge problem here, and everyone knows it.

How can you state that this is pitting government agencies against one another? There is a problem and we can use all the help we can get.

If the City can’t do anything about X-Councilman Canes untagged cars and cheap crack is plentiful day and night on Fourth St. why should the citizens rely on more posturing from politiciants at City Hall?

  6. This exactly why they need the FBI!
You know damn well he's involved in it too. He's no different than those breaking into your house to take all they can.....he just has a differant way in.

  7. Outside city limits or not it is still Pocomoke and still reflects on the town. I am sure the families of the murder victims do not want to hear that because the murder did not occur in city limits it is not as important. A life is a life!! Also, Billy and Stephanie are not sarcastic in their posts, and I feel that the mayor being sarcastic back (not only in this post but in posts on the discussion boards at Pocomoke Tattler), appears he is being disrespectful.

  9. Are you people kidding me? The mayor himself IS a deputy with the Worcester County Sheriff's Department...why wouldn't they be involved considering he is one of them??? It merely sounds like to me he's clearing that up for everyone...Cowger and Clarke are screaming get them involved (WCSD and Worcester County Bureau of Investigations) but if they did their homework instead of NOT DOING IT...they (Cowger/Clarke) would have been able to rest your concerns assured that the Sheriff's Dept and WC Bureau of Investigations ARE involved...thanks MR. Mayor for letting us ALL know that those organizations are working with the PPD against crime...even though some of us are a little slow at understanding that...

  10. The mayor of Pocomoke may work for the Worcester County Sheriffs Dept, but THREE of his coworkers have told me on separate occasions that they need to go back into the Pocomoke PD and take it back over.
