Maryland Congressman says Bill to make D.C. a State is Unconstitutional

Rep. Andy Harris (R.-Md.) said in an interview with CNSNews.com that a bill that passed the U.S. House of Representatives this summer to make the District of Columbia a state is unconstitutional.

“I would hope that the nine members of the Supreme Court can read the plain language of the Constitution and realize it would be an unconstitutional attempt,” Harris said of the bill.

On June 26, the House voted 232 to 180 to approve the Washington, D.C. Admission Act. Only one Democrat voted against the bill.

If enacted, it would convert the District of Columbia into a state that would be called Washington, Douglas Commonwealth. This new state, like all other states, would have two United States senators.

One provision of the bill, as explained in its summary, “provides for expedited consideration of a joint resolution repealing the 23rd Amendment to the Constitution, which provides for the appointment of electors of the President and Vice President.”

  2. When has anyone cared if it was constitutional or not??? They just do it and it is up you to Harris to stop them, along with the citizens but, we know the citizens rather be slaves so we can't expect or count on them!!!!

The Trump Administration is counterfeiting the US Dollar by deficit spending, just like every POTUS since 1913. Except Mr Trump has broken all records.

      How bout them apples?

  7. 9:36 it’s unContifutional because it’s the nations capital for all Americans. Not like a state where that state just belongs to the people of that state and Governed by that states representatives. the District belongs to All Americans and was set up and intended that way and governed by the elected President and his administration. Most of DC falls under the Dept of the Interior and appointed by the President . Read the Constitution.

  8. Gee. Ya think?? Tell me why he is our representative?? If DC becomes a state. It will be just like PR. Nothing more but another shithole State that constantly needs millions and millions of Taxpayers money. PR has been nothing but a money pit. With corrupt and incompetent leaders. DC will be 10 time's worse.

  9. The nations capital CAN still remain, but most of NE/SE/NW/SW DC can go to Maryland since DC is on MD's side of the Potomac.

Don't let logistics or feelings get in the way of NEEDED change. 21st Century and the Constitution is still upheld with a smaller portion of DC remaining the nation's capital.

Thinking outside of the box is ok.

  10. Yep, just for PR purposes.

While they're passing their wish list they might as well declare AOC and MadMax to be ex officio members of Mensa, and Fat Jerry Nadler a svelte 160 pounds!

  12. Good job, Andy Harris. We know why DemocRats are doing this nonsense. They need 2 extra Socialist Senators in order to win Senate Majority. Another Crooked Plan, one of many evil plans of theirs.
