GOP Reach Agreement On COVID-19 Relief; $600 Unemployment Boost Becomes 70% 'Wage Replacement'; Pelosi Pops Fuse

With the Trump Treasury sitting on $1.8 trillion and three months to spend it, the White House and Senate Republicans are set to introduce a $1 trillion spending bill on Monday which would be released in stages - angering Democrats who are pushing for an immediate, $3 trillion shotgun blast of stimulus.

Speaking with ABC's "This Week," White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said "I see us being able to provide unemployment insurance, maybe a retention credit, to keep people from being displaced or brought back into the workplace, helping with our schools," adding "we can negotiate on the rest of the bill in the weeks to come."

The Trump administration opposes an extension of a $600-a-week enhanced unemployment paymentthat expired this month, Mnuchin and Meadows said. Instead, White House officials favor a planto reimburse an individual's lost wages or salary by up to 70%, said Mnuchin and Meadows. -Newsday

Asked whether expiring federal unemployment benefits will be extended, WH Chief of Staff Mark Meadows says "The original benefits will not... We are going to be prepared, on Monday, to provide unemployment insurance extension that would be 70% of wages." https://t.co/qxICVVlxra pic.twitter.com/cDY6VWjXNN— This Week (@ThisWeekABC) July 26, 2020

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) popped a fuse at the GOP proposal, blaming Republicans for waiting too long to negotiate for more relief after House Democrats passed a fifth, $3 trillion relief bill which would have included immediate aid to state and local governments, expanded testing and contact tracing for COVID-19.

  2. Does that mean people that were making 100k a year will get more than the $600 extra a week while furloughed?

  3. Considering 600 per week would equate 31,500 salary plus normal UI benefits I don't see how this is any better or worse. Still paying people for staying home.

  6. The offer is 200 per month until states can get their unemployment systems in order to figure out the 70 percent. There's also a waiver for additional time if the states can't figure out how to do it in 3 months. Typical politics and they will meet somewhere in the middle.

  7. State and Local Democrat run governments (read the Town of Ocean City) are doing nothing for the unemployed but only for themselves. Most employed Transportation workers in OC are the management. Why don't they pare themselves back? No tram, no shuttle, and a fraction of the highway transportation coverage. Making matters worse for those transportation employees they turned their back on, they'll be luck to even qualify for unemployment over the winter for the fraction of employment they proved their workers. Nancy Pelose wants to give back to these local governments but why? They don't benefit anyone but themselves.

  8. But the US spends more than it receives from its citizenry.
    How can it do this?
How can one spend more than income?

  9. The $200 Republican proposal is still way too high. Needs to be cut way back. Most of the base and members of the Republican Party don’t need the money. They need another big tax cut before year end.

  10. Our government has been paying people not to work, for decades, in the form of welfare, food stamps, WIC programs. section 8 housing and more.

  11. 7:30 pm. Welfare was only enacted to help people to seek employment. I was helped by welfare when I first started to work. It provided me enough money to share an apartment with 3 other girls. It helped pay my bus fare. It wasn't alot but it helped. I am all for helping someone to get started. I was only 18 at the time and just retired after 38 years working.
Welfare was never meant to be a permanent entitlement generation after generation. We taxpayers so should not have to pay people to have babies, cell phones, debt cards. It's a disgrace. Now these same people are demanding we defund our police, special recognition for slavery - when does it end.

    1. The only welfare intended to go on year after year is the corporate welfare pushed by the Republican Party. The kind of welfare that gives generous tax breaks to big companies for sending your job overseas.

  13. @8:21 When you lot stop raising pussies and government yes men. I know it's harsh but it's true. You teach your children fighting is wrong, send them to schools where the minorities celebrate violence inflicted upon them, then well, I can only imagine how much you'd be against actual violence in a revolution.

  14. 9:00 PM They have to go over seas because too many people in this country think they should get paid to sit at home and do nothing.

  15. @11:18...while your so busy advocating a civil war between Americans, it would be the perfect time for a foreign government to attack us. Congratulations, you've bought into the racial division Trump has been pushing. Minority children aren't the only ones committing assaults in the schools...just ask a DJS worker how many white kids commit crimes that get swept under the rug or the courts give them a slap on the wrist. And for those pushing for the additional unemployment benefits, aren't you the same ones pushing against socialism? Well, hate to break it to ya, that's socialism. Get a job, Walmart, fast food, whatever to support yourself. Black people work less than desirable jobs all the time and know what it's like to be poor. Get's it's yalls turn now.

  17. @10:28 Sell your racial division tripe elsewhere. Not interested in hearing it. I love mine. We aren't one and never will be. We don't like your ghetto, disrespectful, communist, ethnocentric, entitlement minded, arrogant, culture. We don't want our children learning to twerk, having baby daddies, "hustle" or any other of the never ending list of low class thuggery. As for your minorities aren't committing violence rhetoric, number one I lived it. Number two the crime statistics in the USA demonstrate who does what.

You don't love us and we don't love you. Simple to understand and no need to pretend otherwise.

    Keep it a buck, chuck.
