A Viewer Writes: Sams Club check out aisles deathtraps
Anyone been to Sam's lately? They reconfigured the store and instead of the nice wide check out - waiting line - aisle, they have now got you trapped into these narrow aisles where you are surrounded by rows of junk food. Who thought this was a smart idea? They are not 2 carts wide like the normal aisles. Such a ridiculous and unsafe configuration. The hazardous wall of pallets out front was bad enough, protruding into the traffic lane, forcing you to dodge oncoming traffic as you attempt to get into the store and trapping you between a wall of pallets and the building but now this? Who thinks up these hazardous plans and implements them? Even Walmart has cleaned up their entryways and made them safer and shorter, but not Sams, they are sticking with, what seems to be "putting our customers at risk" strategy.
I agree. The aisles are so narrow I could not walk down the aisles to shop because of the people waiting to check out. They also had only 2-3 lines with live cashiers. Self check was very slow with only 1 employee helping the people. Noticed no signs on the self check registersinforming people debit/CREDIT PAYMENT. People behind us had been in line for at least 8 minutes when they realized they could not use cash. Shopping trip was not as enjoyable as before.
You ungrateful whiney asses Sam's Club NEVER closed the door to shop, the employees there All day have to put up with Your bitch and moans when you to stay Home and quit spreading the virus.Simple solution if you are so bitchy about Sams give your headache to Costco or BJ
I think this is crazy. I go to Sam's almost every day,and there are all kinds of checkout lines and five or six self checkout lines.I have no problem getting around like they've set it up to be safe from the Covid-19 gurus. Also, when they have stuff that's for sale at a good price and maybe even junk food; it saves me from having to go all the way back to the end of the store to buy things. I personally think it's helpful. I love Sam's Club, and they are the best bargain shopping one can get. I am 72 years old,and I appreciate their low prices. I get two for one items that I would have to pay for one at just regular stores.the best thing about her is I don't have to go to any other stores. I also use their pharmacy and their vision prescription indoor store. Sam's card pays for itself in just a few months for me.
The Sam's Club that I go to is constantly wiping down all the checkout screens, shopping carts of all kinds. They also give you a mask if you need one. They have sanitizer bottles everywhere.
What some of you fail to realize is that they did that to comply with the people who said we had to do that it wasn't soley a mangers bright idea to do it okay second is we have call-outs all the time at least maybe two a day mainly being from cashiers or those who work up front and it sucks when it happens but Sam's employees having been working since the pandemic shit we are tired as well 3rd is that not everyone working for Sam's club like me are not hired to be a cashier otherwise I would help the long lines but in fact I've never touched a cash register since starting here meaning I don't know the first button to push let alone the process step by step for those working as cashiers and quite frankly all Sam's employees hate how busy we are on a daily when were trying to social distance but becomes impossible at some point listen if you don't need it keep your ass home don't come stand around in Sam's because your bored at home NOT COOL.
I have memberships at Costco and Sams. Costco stores are much cleaner and the employees are always friendly and helpful. Maybe in part it’s because Costco pays their employees so much more than Sams.
I haven't been in a long while. My son goes for me.I save a lot of money, because now I only get what need. However if I ever go, I will not want to be close, and exposed to other peoples germs. So, seem like I would get prescriptions and be out of there. Can go to Walmart for that type of shopping.
Have been Sam's Club member for 20 plus years... Shopping there at least weekly... And often more than once a week ... I do however agree that the recent layout changes as well as the modified check out lanes are awful... BJ's opened near me last November... Like it so much better... Check outs are great... Have only been back to Sam's a few times since to pick up only specific items they sell... But do dread going there now....
I wasn’t able to find anything.. I guess the plan is to have you stay longer and spend more.. too much junk food we need more organics choices .. I almost cry it was s total mess wasn’t able to find mixed Nuts and dried fruits.. help Whole Foods we need you .. on top of that they now having someone at the door hallowing at you .. Are you a prime member let me see your card ? .
They have the experience cashiers Bagging/ or stocking cart and the trainee on the registers .. the last time the cashier was on a mission checking the customer goods and roll in mine .. I was behind her it was a total mess .. yes she had attitude as well
I have used the scan and go app. It's nice but you still stand in line as you are trying to leave the store. They scan your phone and at least 1 item in your cart.
How does the scan and pay actually work? Do you order your items online or you go to a specific app to do the scanning while you are physically in the store

Get their app and use the scan and go. Skip the lines and exit. It’s VERY simple and convenient I love it. Plus I also have COSTCO I don’t go as often because Sams has this app and COSTCO doesn’t. No lines for me. This article isn’t necessary. If you don’t like it then cancel your membership and shop elsewhere. Scan and Go is the BEST!!
They need to be reported you can't safely distance and pass.They insist you wear a mask but that doesn't mean get closer.Poor planning on remodeling of stores layout.
If you don’t feel comfortable, you can order online and pick up. I feel that they are doing an excellent job and think that some people aren’t happy no matter what is being done and just like to complain. Sorry. Try to stay positive, you may feel better.

You pay an annual membership fee to be charged more for things that are in huge quantities than you can buy anywhere else for less in normal quantities.
Amazon charges ~120 a year. Samsclub basic membership is 45. True there are certain things that arent that big of a saving, but theres usually a lot that are. Hygen and health products are cheaper and if you are looking for deals on electronics Samsclub is def the place to go.

I quit going there years ago. Last time I was in a Sam's club was 2009 and I haven't been back since. I waited over an hour in line with frozen foods on a hot July day.
They had only one register open and it was a Saturday. I made sure to let the manager know I was never going to shop there again. I also wrote the corporation a letter giving my name, address and phone number telling them about my experience.
All I got was a chained response from corporate stating they would contact the manager about it and he would also reach out to me.
Nothing happened and I have not been back since. This was at the Sam's club in Salisbury.
The corporation today is nothing like it was back in the early days when Walmart offered a good value for the money and the Sam's choice products were good quality. The employees all got decent pay with quarterly success sharing bonuses.
Even Walmart is a painful experience to shop at and I only go there as a last resort.
They are also diligently working to eliminate cashiers in favor of self check outs. Food Lion the same!
But then here couldn't exaggerate the situation and have an article to write about. Wait maybe he had nothing to begin with and had to come up with this dribble to meet a deadline.
Only fools comment on things they know nothing about. Sam's has downsized portion sizes in most of their fresh areas to satisfy more people. Their meat is amazing. Btw, ever hear of a freezer, just saying..
I agree with buying in bulk I buy my meat that way I buy a big pack of pork spare ribs for $25 or so and can get 13 or more meals out of it where else can you get 13 meals for $25 I'm alone now and been on a fixed income all my life
Ok if you don't like shopping at Sam's club don't shop there.. it's that simple... My husband and myself love shopping at Sam's club.. yes you pay more but it's quaunity.. you get large supply where you don't have to buy something for awhile... They have different choices in ways to shop there..
8:58 pm You have missed the whole concept of a warehouse (Sam's - Costco - BJs). Too late to explain. However, if you don't take advantage of this concept you need to stop shopping there.
So downgrade your membership then. No one is forcing you to pay for the premium membership you are choosing to pay the 100. They have a 45 dollar membership
Unless their policy has changed, you can cancel your 100 dollar plus membership and recieve a full refund. They also have/had the avantage membership which was 45.00. Worth checking into.
I belong to Sam's club for over 30 years. They offer things like when you have a flat tire, if they can fix it.. it's free.. doesn't matter if you bought your tires from them. I use the app scan and go.. I enjoy shopping at Sam's.. they carry things and it's a savings.. the membership fee isn't much money..
I agree, I don't like it, if something is not broken why fix it. The configuration is confusing and crowded. I never understand why store discontinue there popular saling item's smh
My Sam's Club is great...8 self serve stations with 4 additional cashier checkout counters. Every aisleway is extra wide. I feel so safe shopping at Sam's. So safe that it is the Only place I shop.
I shop at Sam’s and their meat looks a lot better than what the grocery stores are selling. I cut the meat into the sizes I need and freeze it. I do save by buying in bulk and the quality of the meat is better than the local stores
It is ridiculous hour waits in line now no signs saying no cash accepted in this line so then had to go to the ebd of another line wait another 30 or 40 minutes then atleast 20 people in line to leave waiting to get receiot checked
I disagree...I use to buy 45 tallkitchen trash bags at my local grocer for about 8.00....at Sams I bought 200 Tall kitchen bags for 14.00....I bought 8 of the new light bulbs for under 6.00 at Sams, at any other big box store they are close to 5.00 for 2....
Yes, they treat their employees like human beings and pay them very well, not like Sam/Walmart they keep their employees at the poverty level so that they spend their food stamps at Walmart.... I refuse to shop there!!! I wish people would read about how horrible they treat their employees

Scan & Go....try it because it might give you a little bit of joy. Once you are a tiny bit happy then maybe you'll stop spreading that negativity around to everyone else....J/S
It is just as described. Its awful. and no meat. Only meat they had was pork and lamb, no beef at all, very little fish. I was there Tues and noticed they moved everything around and the guy in-front of me commented on how much stuff was missing and how ridiculous the aisle were.
Problem is you can't find what you are looking for because its in that aisle and you cant get to it without crawling over people so that whole "social distancing" thing is a moot point.
Its screwed up and who ever thought of it was an idiot.
Listen I work at Sam's club and yes we are out of a lot of things. You know why? Because we are in a pandemic and they arent being shipped to us regularly. It's not like we arent ordering it just so you cant have it. Social distancing is what you and everyone else makes it. We have direction to put things in the places we do for a reason. It's not a store decision. We place the social distancing features for safety but it's hard clearly to make people follow them and you are blaming the store for that? No it's your fellow peers who dont seem to care that is the problem
That's how the Sams is in Gastonia, NC, too. People lined up to check out waiting in narrow product aisles. Very unsafe at this store.Social distancing non existent. I'm not going back til the virus dies down some. I loaded up with 3 months worth of supplies anyway.
Me and my husband find what we need like washing items Downy beads Downy fabric softener we get this same items monthly every few months toilet paper and bleach I pay with debit card I'm out I'm not in long lines if my husband uses cash still short libes in and out NO COMPLAINTS
Our Sam's Club is awesome! Use the scan n go. No lines! They are out of product because the manufacturers are behind because of putting up all their safety equipment for the virus. So the the Vendors are now playing catch up. If you don't know what you are talking about don't speak. Not all Sam's Clubs look the same way. Some are larger than others. If you use use all the things that a membership has to offer it pays for itself. $4 prescriptions, tires,quality meat dept.,etc... Due to the virus they have been open endangering their lives and their families while you complainers come in and do nothing but complain and expose them to the virus by not wearing a mask. Medical staff aren't the only people afraid to go home to their families. So before you start complaining about such small things...why don't you look at what really matters in the world.

Everyone that has a smart phone can install the Sam's app on their phone and enroll in shop n go. As you shop you scan the bar code of the items in your cart, when you are done you click pay and it provides a bar cade that they scan at the exit door and your done. No check out line to be stuck in.
Captain Obvious here. Not all Sam's Club stores are configured like the one mentioned in the article. Our local club has wide aisles, social distancing floor markers, and a clear view of the club....no piles of pallets. I suggest you speak with your local club Manager to sddress your concerns.

Since this pandemic I have been ordering shelf items online with free shipping because I have the upgraded Sam’s card. No longer will I go into the store and fill my cart with large items like paper towels, toilet paper, etc. when it can be delivered to my front door in 3 to 4 days.
Your evidently not listening the scan & go is super fast. You simply show the bar code of each item and go to a very fast short line never more than two people in line show the total to person @ door and you are out. Use a credit card put it on Sam’s scan & go sight & you are ready!
On a different note the mismanagement in terms of employees is inane...racial slurs sexual harassment retaliation...this is going on in a Nashville Tennessee store...management doing nothing despite complaints.

I am in Sam's Club at least once a week. I usually get what I go for. No problem. Sometimes I do look around find some interesting stuff. I checkout thru the self- checkout lanes. The other lanes be too long. But all in all my shop trip is good at SAM'S club. You are un comfortable about shopping there, go online shop and pick up at the store. Problem solved.
I hate Walmart and SAMs, I refuse to walk into a Walmart, but I have no chose but to shop at SAMs I have their business member ship which sucks because I cannot get anything that goes on sale in their flyers... which makes no sense. I wish they would go under because they treat their employees like garbage
I agree with all of you. Sam's Club line is horrible. I can't tell you how many times I've walked in and walked out because the line is so long. I guess they call it self saving money by having fewer cashiers.
Sam's club is a big rip off. They never responded to my question about not being able to use my 100 dollar membership. All I got was a reminder of "It's time to renew your membership. I couldn't use the old one because they never had the item's that I usually buy and still don't.
I always shop at Sam clubs because everyone is tested before entering and breathing the same air. Unlike a beach or a park and supporting mult billionaires purchasing products from slave labor makes me feel better about myself.
Why do you feel that scanning go isn't an option for everybody. The only problem that I have seen with scanning go is you can't use a food stamp card. pretty much in 2020 everybody has a cell phone with the App store or the Android play store. I understand that some people can absolutely not use the scanning go but 95% of the people in line can use the scanning go app which would make traffic and congestion a hundred times better if people would stop being stubborn and just use it.
What Sam's club is this?? The 2 we shop at does not have pallets up and all but 1 check out lanes are self checkout. The lane with a cashier is always empty. We do scan and go or curbside.

SAMS #ScanAndGo is the best no other retail has this app super fast! Now they have curbside pick up too through their club pick up order ahead of time and when its ready check in on the app when you arrive and they ll bring it out to you in less than 5 min. If you are a conspiracy theory and think every thing is the end of the world plan please shop somewhere else your attitude makes it worst for the other members and employees they won't miss you!

I don't know what Sam's Club this is but it could be ran better from the outside looking in. Sounds like a lot of hazards. I work for Sam's and I can tell you this first hand. People will complain all day because it's inconveniencing them.. Use the scan and go app you can in and out in no time. The line will be all the way to the back of the store and I will personally ask people do they need help with Scan and Go app, and people will say I don't know how and do even want to download it but complain at the same time. SMH Scan and Go would eliminate 50% of the lines but people refuse to use it. P So instead of putting people at the exit door to help scan people out faster they have to put them on the end to control the line so people won't try to cut people to get out faster.for the most part everywhere I have been shopping has been an inconvenience except for Kroger and HEB So take it with a grain of salt.
After reading some of these comments come on people, no one forces you to shop or have a membership there, I personally like Sam's and Walmart, I live a hundred miles from both and have my items shipped if I am unable to go.
The one in Keller does not wipe down each cart when they put them back in for use. I've watched it happen multiple times. Do not assume they have, wipe it down yourself them sanitize your hands. I personally am not a Sam's fan but it's where an elderly family member has rx and prefers. Now Costco, they are fanatical about spraying down their carts every time I'm there. Bottom line, how many hourly workers are going to feel compelled to go above and beyond to make things safe? That's where the weak link is.
I shop at Sam's club in Chesapeake, Virginia, and I think it is an awesome place to shop. I love it. I shop there frequently so most of the people at the entrance and exit door recognize me. They are very friendly. I found the ailes and system very easy to follow. I like the products and the prices. I'm very satisfied with my membership and think all these complaints, as far as my store is concerned, are misplaced. It's a wonderful store with good products and prices, and they seem to do everything they can to make it as safe and as convenient as possible. I commend them highly for putting up with the public in general.
Well according to sams club they open later to stock and clean. I find this untrue the isles are cluttered prohibiting social distancing. I've experienced full pallets in the isles. Maybe corporate needs to visit unannounced.
I agree been shopping at Sam's for alot of years and its gotten worse the aisle is for there convenience no thought into customer piled on top eachother and how about if you want the most common things bought you can't get to them because they are blocked by people waiting to check out so if you try be sure you will catch something since you cant distance and probably catch a case also with attitude from others as you politely ask to gain entry for something on your list. Come on Sam's your stores are big enough to come up with a better solution
Sam's club has always took the easy way out.. They are in legal battles now as we speak over.. How the never gave their workers the proper compensation for staying and working.. They dont care about their employees they dont care about the customer all they want is your money.. And everyone trying to save a nickel is there.. Pushing there way around fighting over free sample.. I was ashamed to see these people during the day.. When the vendors came out.. It was sad.
Sams club has done everything possible to keep their associates and members both as safe as possible! The reason for only having 3 "live cashiers" as you say...open are due to social distancing! Clubs have had to deal with reports to the health department as a result of all of this. So every register cannot be opej as it does not allow for social distancing. Be thankful these people come to work and make it easy for you cranky people to shop at all! We have put ourselves on the line from day one!
My Lord People, If any of ya worked in retail you would understand what these associates have to go through especially when people call in and don't show up. The ones that do show are blessed with the task of those people that didn't. Have some compassion. Ya have a problem! Go elsewhere. I love Sam's Club. I quit shopping at Walmart years ago and I don't care how cheep they are. I buy in bulk so I don't have to go to the store as often. The prices are great for bulk. I've never had an issue with Sam's.
Sam's really need to change alot of things starting with their way of payments on the app. They should allow you to pay with SNAP. Second customer service Third making aisles more spacious! Don't waste your time calling corporate because they don't end up doing absolutely NOTHING!!!

Samsclubs policy is to spray carts down. Currently using 5 gallon jugs of sanitizer. If a club isnt then you should call and complain about it.

DeleteAmazon charges ~120 a year. Samsclub basic membership is 45. True there are certain things that arent that big of a saving, but theres usually a lot that are. Hygen and health products are cheaper and if you are looking for deals on electronics Samsclub is def the place to go.

ReplyDeleteI quit going there years ago. Last time I was in a Sam's club was 2009 and I haven't been back since. I waited over an hour in line with frozen foods on a hot July day.
ReplyDeleteThey had only one register open and it was a Saturday. I made sure to let the manager know I was never going to shop there again. I also wrote the corporation a letter giving my name, address and phone number telling them about my experience.
All I got was a chained response from corporate stating they would contact the manager about it and he would also reach out to me.
Nothing happened and I have not been back since.
This was at the Sam's club in Salisbury.
The corporation today is nothing like it was back in the early days when Walmart offered a good value for the money and the Sam's choice products were good quality. The employees all got decent pay with quarterly success sharing bonuses.
Even Walmart is a painful experience to shop at and I only go there as a last resort.
They are also diligently working to eliminate cashiers in favor of self check outs. Food Lion the same!

ReplyDeleteMy Sam's Club is great...8 self serve stations with 4 additional cashier checkout counters. Every aisleway is extra wide. I feel so safe shopping at Sam's. So safe that it is the Only place I shop.

Listen I work at Sam's club and yes we are out of a lot of things. You know why? Because we are in a pandemic and they arent being shipped to us regularly. It's not a store decision. We place the social distancing features for safety but it's hard clearly to make people follow them and you are blaming the store for that? No it's your fellow peers who dont seem to care that is the problem

ReplyDeleteOur Sam's Club is awesome! Use the scan n go. No lines! They are out of product because the manufacturers are behind because of putting up all their safety equipment for the virus. So the the Vendors are now playing catch up. If you don't know what you are talking about don't speak. Not all Sam's Clubs look the same way. Some are larger than others. If you use use all the things that a membership has to offer it pays for itself. $4 prescriptions, tires,quality meat dept.,etc... Due to the virus they have been open endangering their lives and their families while you complainers come in and do nothing but complain and expose them to the virus by not wearing a mask. Medical staff aren't the only people afraid to go home to their families. So before you start complaining about such small things...why don't you look at what really matters in the world.

As you shop you scan the bar code of the items in your cart, when you are done you click pay and it provides a bar cade that they scan at the exit door and your done. No check out line to be stuck in.

Our local club has wide aisles, social distancing floor markers, and a clear view of the club....no piles of pallets. I suggest you speak with your local club Manager to sddress your concerns.

ReplyDeleteSince this pandemic I have been ordering shelf items online with free shipping because I have the upgraded Sam’s card. No longer will I go into the store and fill my cart with large items like paper towels, toilet paper, etc. when it can be delivered to my front door in 3 to 4 days.
ReplyDeleteYour evidently not listening the scan & go is super fast. You simply show the bar code of each item and go to a very fast short line never more than two people in line show the total to person @ door and you are out. Use a credit card put it on Sam’s scan & go sight & you are ready!

ReplyDeleteI am in Sam's Club at least once a week. I usually get what I go for. No problem. Sometimes I do look around find some interesting stuff. I checkout thru the self- checkout lanes. The other lanes be too long. But all in all my shop trip is good at SAM'S club. You are un comfortable about shopping there, go online shop and pick up at the store. Problem solved.

Why do you feel that scanning go isn't an option for everybody. The only problem that I have seen with scanning go is you can't use a food stamp card. pretty much in 2020 everybody has a cell phone with the App store or the Android play store. I understand that some people can absolutely not use the scanning go but 95% of the people in line can use the scanning go app which would make traffic and congestion a hundred times better if people would stop being stubborn and just use it.

Now they have curbside pick up too through their club pick up order ahead of time and when its ready check in on the app when you arrive and they ll bring it out to you in less than 5 min. ReplyDeleteI don't know what Sam's Club this is but it could be ran better from the outside looking in. Sounds like a lot of hazards. I work for Sam's and I can tell you this first hand. People will complain all day because it's inconveniencing them.. Use the scan and go app you can in and out in no time. The line will be all the way to the back of the store and I will personally ask people do they need help with Scan and Go app, and people will say I don't know how and do even want to download it but complain at the same time. SMH

ReplyDeleteThe one in Keller does not wipe down each cart when they put them back in for use. I've watched it happen multiple times. Do not assume they have, wipe it down yourself them sanitize your hands. I personally am not a Sam's fan but it's where an elderly family member has rx and prefers. Now Costco, they are fanatical about spraying down their carts every time I'm there.

I shop at Sam's club in Chesapeake, Virginia, and I think it is an awesome place to shop. I love it. I shop there frequently so most of the people at the entrance and exit door recognize me. They are very friendly. I found the ailes and system very easy to follow. I like the products and the prices. I'm very satisfied with my membership and think all these complaints, as far as my store is concerned, are misplaced. It's a wonderful store with good products and prices, and they seem to do everything they can to make it as safe and as convenient as possible. I commend them highly for putting up with the public in general.
ReplyDeleteWell according to sams club they open later to stock and clean. I find this untrue the isles are cluttered prohibiting social distancing. I've experienced full pallets in the isles. Maybe corporate needs to visit unannounced.
ReplyDeleteI agree been shopping at Sam's for alot of years and its gotten worse the aisle is for there convenience no thought into customer piled on top eachother and how about if you want the most common things bought you can't get to them because they are blocked by people waiting to check out so if you try be sure you will catch something since you cant distance and probably catch a case also with attitude from others as you politely ask to gain entry for something on your list. Come on Sam's your stores are big enough to come up with a better solution

They dont care about their employees they dont care about the customer all they want is your money.. And everyone trying to save a nickel is there.. Pushing there way around fighting over free sample.. I was ashamed to see these people during the day.. When the vendors came out.. It was sad.

The reason for only having 3 "live cashiers" as you say...open are due to social distancing! Clubs have had to deal with reports to the health department as a result of all of this. So every register cannot be opej as it does not allow for social distancing.
