A Viewer Writes: Johnson McKee Animal Hospital Salisbury Maryland

We recently adopted a kitten from the Delmarva Cat Connection which we have been enormously happy with. Part of our fee for the adoption included neutering or spaying. This past Mon 6/22/20 our kitty was taken by the Connection to the Annapolis area for her spaying. We picked her back up about 8:30 PM that same evening. When we arrived home I removed her from the Pet Carrier and noticed one eye was closed. I just thought could be a cold, sinus infection or something. I did keep putting warm damp cloths on the eye to make it feel better . By Friday it seemed to be draining, and discharge more so I called our family vet we have had more than 10+ years but they were closing for about 2 wks. I called the place we went before we had changed due frankly because of cost and getting quicker than we did @ Johnson McKee. I gave the girl our info and she said they still had the records, but curtly she said you won’t be able to have your pet treated here. I asked why and she said our chart was “tagged” I asked her why she said she could not tell me I would need to speak to the office mgr so I asked for the office mgr and was told she was not there, I asked when she would return she said she did not know, so I asked to speak to one of the vets when one was available she said no they were too busy. I then a told her I would call back until I got to speak to this mgr. I did so and was told she was in but would not speak to me, I then told her that I had a right since they were a hospital and it was an ER situation that the mgr call me & left my number. I got home about 10 min later this female cld screaming (I presume the mgr) I did not catch the name she said it was their right to tag charts and I did not need to know why , they could tag any chart they wanted. I tried to explain I had gone their for many years when it was Dr. Rufus Johnson, and then John McKee and that I knew Mrs McKee personally through a group we were in and that I was sure she would advise I be told. The (mgr?) got more and more beligerant that it was their practice and they would do what they wanted. I told her I had a right to know since it was my chart to know why it was necessary to refuse treatment for a real emergency, and customers have rights too. She proceeded to holler louder and louder to the point you could hardly understand her rant. I told her that I could post it on facebook or a local web that people in emergency situations had rights. She then said she wasn’t sure why it was tagged but probably because I was rude! To then I said something I truly shouldn’t have. Please if there is anyone out there with reviews like mine please let this blog and myself know. I have worked in the medical profession myself for 47 years before retiring and I never treated anyone like this or had a staff member that was allowed to act like this. And we do have rights.

  1. There aren’t really any rights conveyed upon you for any type of pet emergency... so that’s your first problem. The second is that an eye not opening after anesthesia isn’t necessarily an emergency either. Demanding that you’re seen with an animal that has never been treated by a particular vet due to “history” with other pets is absurd, so I’d say the manager was probably right about you’re file getting flagged. Sounds like your are very rude and entitled.

  2. The human medical profession and the veterinary medical profession are not to be confused with one another.
Write a letter to the owners for an explanation of your issue.

  3. They can refuse service to anyone they please. You do have rights, the right to have your cat treated at whichever Animal Hospital is not one of them. Clearly you have done something wrong in the past since I find it hard to believe JM would flag a record for no reason.

    1. As a former employee there, you really can just look at office staff the wrong way in their opinion and get flagged. I assure you.

  5. Exactly what “right” are you invoking? Here is a lesson in reality, you have NO rights. What you have is a set of “privileges” that can revoked at any time. Who do you think actually GIVES you these “rights”? They can refuse service to anyone they like. In reading your rant...I can see why they refused to speak to you or provide service. I’m sure that your name is “Karen”.

The fact you do not realize this shows your in the defense and a young immature adult. So therefore imo the employees at J.M are still on here trying to defend their lousy customer service skills which good customer service is about as difficult to achieve as breathing. It's not rocket science to just be nice to customers that are paying their money to your boss. The vet is not the damn welfare office

  7. I went their 10 years ago for a sick dog I adopted. X-ray antibiotics and vet visits for kennel cough. 780 dollar. I told them I have half and can pay the other half in a week on pay day. They said we will keep the animal and charge 25 a day boarding cost. And I could not have the animal until debt is paid. 900 dollar a week later...vet charged me 375 for 9 min visit... I’m so happy the pot store is next to them and the traffic is driving them nuts. Lol.

  8. There's a place called Pets ER if you were that concerned and not satisfied with your treatment at JM, although it does sound like you think you are entitled just because you knew a doctors wife.

  9. Well I'm sure in today's social climate these ladies are being asked to do a lot of things outside of their normal job descriptions. I've been going there for 6 years now and completely trust my baby with no one but Dr. Peters. Have I had something that pissed me off in my 6 years of going there YES but I decided to change the way I react to other's ways of dealing with the stresses in today's social climate. Give them a break it's a different world today and they do an awesome job 99% of the time

    1. Give it a break. Her pet was having issues and looking for assistance. Regardless of their job duties in or out of the social climate is no excuse. I've been there LOOOONNNGGG before this social climate. My dog was having problems breathing. They had me sit there for 20 minutes until I asked them WTH are they waiting for?? My dog can't breathe. While they are on the phone calling to confirm appointments. Stop making excuses. If you're a vet?? People come to you for help with pets. Not to be harrased or ignored while the pet is suffering.

Wicomico Vet center is by far the best. Dr. Brooks is the best Vet in the area bar NONE.

  10. 8:08 You are so off base that it's ridiculous. First off I have not ever called my vet with what I believed to be an emergency and they don't immediately say to bring the animal in. They may say I might have to leave the pet until they get a chance to see them. We aren't vets Einstein so many don't know what's an emergency and what is not Use you head Secondly there is no reason EVER-EVER do you understand? for someone working at a vet hospital to be rude to anyone no matter what. People are upset and part of professionalism is to turn the situation around. It's very easy to do by speaking like a civilize person and being understanding. This so called office manager needs to keep her raunchy self in line and in line starting immediately because social media and the internet can and does cause loss of business.

    1. Actually, vets are turning away people. I got turned away and told to call the pet Er. Seems like they really want you using that instead of the vet. The vet is just for check ups. Not sure if covid is to blame or not. But I was not happy. If my animal is sick I want my vet to see them unless it's the middle of the night emergency.

  12. So you thought you might try to ruin the reputation by writing to the local blogger?

    I see . . .

    I would tag you too!

  13. I don't get it. I own a salon and have refused people but I will tell them why. If the chart was flagged for whatever reason, even if this person seemed rude, why couldn't the office manager just explain why. What if it is a mistake. I think the entire world needs a pill or to of humbleness. Plus sometimes rude people have alot going on deep down in their life and a little kindness can soften them up. This really is about a cat with an eye issue. Not egos.

  15. I have been a client of this vet for years even after Dr. Culver caused the death of one of my dogs. I love Dr. Peters. I called during the pandemic to renew a prescription for my dog who usually gets a slight infection every 6 mos. or so. Sounds like I encountered the same girl. Can't remember her name but it started with an M. She informed me they could not renew my script without bringing the dog in for a "wellness check" for $75. I explained I just needed a renewal and was "sheltering in place" during the pandemic. She refused. This girl was soooooo rude. I requested to speak with Dr. Peters who assured me after the death of my 1st dog I would only deal with him as requested.I was told the same thing, he was not there. I requested a call back from him. Never heard a word. I'm sure she did not let him know. Dr. Perter's better get his staff in line or I will be moving on.. BTW ear infection cleared up with OTC's.

  16. You clearly did not read what I stated at all they refused treatment of a cat with an emergency problem she was later diagnosed through PETS ER as having Herpes virus most likely from the Surgical Hospital for her spaying. Also this has been confirmed by another vet who concurs the way it was handled not well by Johnson McKee. This mgr while ranting stated she didn't even know why the chart was tagged, but probably because I was rude by being too inquisitive. When you have a cat that was previously abused and Delmarva Cat Connection provided me with a really sweet pet for all she has been through. And to be told your cat can't be treated because of a tagged chart then remember this can happen to anyone. I have done nothing wrong but love my pets and want the most or them which is caring people that have the name of "hospital", you expect that they care for more than the almighty $$$$'s.

  17. Lets be honest, if your first reaction is to go to the internet and bash them you probably aren't a very considerate person in real life.

  20. Been going there also for over thirty years and always ask for Dr Peters.
I have no complaints and the staff there have always been friendly to me and my wife. Kindness can to both ways.

  21. What horrid despicable people to possible let a little innocent cat suffer. They should have said to bring the cat in immediately. That is the experience I have always had with my vets. I use several. Years ago I had a cat whose eyes were watering. I took her to the vets turns out she was dehydrated due to a urinary tract infection. That was the only symptom I could see and it did turn out to be an emergency. That they would let a cat suffer because of a "flag" is disgusting and they should be ashamed of themselves.

  22. Many pet ERs are owned by groups of local vets to provide after hours and emergent care. They hire vets to staff them. Is this the case in Salisbury?

    ReplyDelete
  23. June 29, 2020 at 10:00 AM - yes they are the same vets ( new vets practicing on your sick pet)

There is one vet there that is stellar.

I ran away from another one that also just started working at Wicomico Veterinary Hospital a few years back.

    Its a crap shoot sometimes.

  24. I also had a very unpleasant phone convon with this vets office. My employer was doing service work there and when I had to call to verify things the lady was so ignorant we ended up not even performing the work amd telling them we had too much of a workload to take care of them right now because of it.

  25. I love how liberals demand others cater to their every whim.

JM flagged your account for good reason, and we can all see why.

You don’t demand anything Einstein. Take your cat to the ER like the rest of us snowflake.

JM has been our vet for years. We have four dogs and two cats.

I’ve only been disappointed once and we corrected that issue without plastering venomous screed all over the interwebz.

It’s too bad about your car, maybe if you took to JM to be fixed it wouldn’t be in this situation.

    Your privilege is sickening.

  28. 8:57 You are the only one on here that is trying to be rational. I have never dealt with these people, but I can't imagine that they would just not tell you why? It could just be a misunderstanding, like you said. There is no reason to just be rude and unprofessional. Then again we are just hearing one side of the story. People on here are way too judgmental without knowing every side.

  31. Though I have had the misfortune of dealing with this same scenario with being disrespected by a staff member I trust my dog with no one but Dr Peters. I recently had someone there refuse me treatment saying that I didn't have an appointment that day that the date was a supposed reminder to schedule an appointment. It truly angered me but at my age I pick and choose my battles and she wasn't worth it that particular day

  32. Sounds like a bunch of impatient rude ass entitled people here in Salisbury. You know how you all can remedy the situation GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, IDIOTS

  35. I have used Johnson McKee for the past two years.
Because one of my dogs must be checked more often due to age and age related problems I have been there
more often recently. Always been treated courteously by the staff up front and the vets. I moved back here from out of state and it was hard to find a practice as good as the one I had frequented in my last location. In desperation I needed a practice to give my father’s cat up to date shots on a Saturday morning so she could visit him in hospice as he really wanted to see her. Johnson and McKee was the only vet (after several calls )that were willing to help me out. I decided then to change vets because these people were kind and willing to squeeze me in. I have not been disappointed and think perhaps there is another side of this story.

  40. I rescued a kitten (not through a group - on my own) before we had Pets ER and it had swollen watery eyes. I called Johnson McKee to make an appointment, and they told me I should “take the cat back where I got it from” because they had no appointments available. I then called Wicomico Animal Hospital who was owned by Dr Jerge at the time. He was amazing, saw her the same day, gave an antibiotic and she healed quickly. I was appalled that any vet office would tell me to take a sick kitten “back to where it came from.”

  42. just the fact that you blame johnson mckee for not seeing your cat when another vet did the work and the then you have the ignorance to come on here and slander them is most likely why your chart was tagged. Some customers just aren't worth the few dollars a business would make when they are out of line aholes like you! suck it up. you got a cat from the pound! what did you expect! johnson mckee have always done the utmost to help me with all my animals each and every time I have asked for their assistance! tried other vets in salisbury and there is a reason I stick with johnson mckee!

  45. The prices these vets are charging are way out of line! It's more expensive to take an animal than it is to go to my own Dr. Probably alot of animals don't get taken to the vet because they just can't afford these prices.

  46. Dr Erin Giza is the BEST! She is at Pets on the Shore.
And @10:11. Dr Brooks may be very good but she is also VERY expensive and no better that Dr Giza in my opinion. We have friends and family members that go to Brooks and she is sometimes rude to them and very overpriced. None of the vets are cheap but there is a limit to what people can aford!

  47. 1st and foremost, Johnson Mckee is showing poor customer service. The office manager should have informed the person why they will no longer treat any of their animals and / or why her account was flagged. There could have been a variety reasons but not telling the person is just plan poor business. I no longer use Johnson Mckee, two reason, high cost and poor service. I just simply took my business else where figuring they do not need my monies. Assuming the person writing this was rude, is just that assuming, yes the writer stated the office manager was rude and we can only take her word because we were not present during their conversation. I am sure some of you have had a pleasant experience, keep in mind we all don't have pleasant experience at same locations. My main point customer service is at an all time low, and they (johnson mckee) should have told this person why her account was flag. Plan and Simple

  54. How dense does someone have to be? They don't want that person's business. It is not a human hospital. It is a private practice for animals, and they can serve who they want...and based on past experience with this former customer, they want nothing to do with the former customer again. The former customer has no RIGHT to service by the animal hospital. Based on the mealy-mouthed complaint, they will never get service again, and I can see why the hospital wants nothing to do with them or their pet. Best for them not to call Johnson and McGee for anything again. The former customer has burnt that bridge down! But me thinks they ARE too dense to realize they can't go around claiming an "emergency" to make someone take their business.

  55. I booked a stay there for my dog. Dog went there stayed one time no problem. Booked my next stay for the dog they said, on the day I was dropping my dog off and flying out, that my dog was aggressive and barked at the male employees last time so I couldn't drop him off. This was after they accepted the appointment. I advised them that fogs do bark occasionally. They told me that they were not equipped to handle my dog. My dog was not aggressive. I missed my flight due to these morons.

You didn't mention your dog's breed. Selective omission? Perhaps a Pitt Bull or Pitt Bull mix? Owners of aggressive dogs should not be able to EXPECT other to watch their dogs for them. They should be kept in cages on their properties.
