On The Fall, Wicomico Schools Superintendent: ‘We Must Be Prepared To Continue With Remote Learning And A Combination Of Both Remote And Face-To-Face’

SALISBURY – School leaders in Wicomico County on Tuesday said families will receive more information in the coming weeks as the school system begins planning for the 2020-2021 academic year.

On Tuesday, Superintendent Donna Hanlin presented the Wicomico County Board of Education with an update on summer school programs and academic instruction as the school system begins to plan for the coming academic year.

This summer, Wicomico County Public Schools will offer online enrichment and intervention activities for elementary school students, as well as virtual summer school for middle and high school students in need of earning credits and improving skills.

  1. Please remove your children from public schools. They are not safe. They do not teach anything of value. Home school your children. Defund public schools

    1. Do you realize the number of private school families that enrolled their kids in public school in April? Parents decided that if private was doing remote learning along with public, they may as well save money. Trust me, it was ALOT.

    2. I call BS. No private school will allow a family to “save money” by pulling a student out in April. They’re paying until the end of the year anyway.

  2. I want to see statistics on how many students actually participated in this remote or virtual, from home, learning environment and how many completed assignments along with their grades. I’d also like to see those same statistics broken down by race. I have teacher friends who have damn near broken down in tears telling me that many of their students just simply quit after a few weeks of this remote/virtual learning environment or never participated from the very beginning. Many of their students haven’t been heard from since their last day in school back in February.

    1. Yup. And all these laptops that went to the “less fortunate” kids have mysteriously been reported as “stolen”.

    2. False. The laptops given out we’re going to be recycled anyway. They were not lost. Idiot.

    3. I call BS. The students were in school until mid-March. What is with the liars on this thread?

  3. Please remove some of the many teachers that Unions have made us hire over the nears. Remote learning doesn't mean a teacher can be paid to sit home and watch soap operas. It means that more students can be taught by fewer teachers.

Did you hire some bad teachers?
      I’ve never hired any teachers.

WE have not done the hiring.
Stop identifying with a corrupt government

  4. What if you are an idiot & bearly passed school yourself? Public school is the only legitimate chance some children have to not follow in their parents' footsteps. I realize I spelled barely incorrectly. I just wanted to give the grammar police a rise.

  5. There is no way to keep our children safe from this. How do you keep a 6 foot circle on a school bus, classroom, hall, lunchroom, locker room, bathroom?

Send your kids to school and buy loads of life insurance on them, might just as well get rich off their inevitable death!

  6. Hamlin: it will be remote alright, remote that these kids will learn anything!! We see first hand now the type of education their receiving and how their putting it to use. Any parent today would be a fool to put kids in wicomico county schools now after all this garbage going on. Your socialist curriculum is about to come back and bite you in the a**

  7. It's nice to see that the LEFT is very active here on the Eastern Shore. 10:36 "They are not safe" -part of the left's solution to this is to take SROs out of the schools. Really, you cried and cried to get SROs into schools now you want them out. "Home school your children". I'll agree with that. If you even have any children in the school system. It would be great for you to take them out of the school system. But wait a minute, have you really researched about how the school system is interconnected with home schooling? I doubt you even researched the topic. You seem to be someone who just likes to talk. "Defund public schools". Typical left wing, socialists Democrats talking out of their ... . 11:10 - all this information is available. Have you by any chance contacted the BOE and if you have a name of any student who hasn't been heard from since February why don't you bring it to someones attention? Perhaps one of your crying teachers friend can help you out with that. Yes, socialist Democrats are alive and well in Wicomico County.

  8. I agree that the public schools are not the best, but some of us have to work FULL TIME. I don't own anything new and my hubby and I have a small very old home trying to fix many issues (plumbing, heat unit, etc) but we are doing the best we can. We don't make enough on a 1 person income and we do not get OR ASK for any government help. Stuck in the middle with crappy insurance and medical bills. I would LOVE to stay home and teach my kids, but I can't. Get up at 5am, get home at 4:30 pm and tell me how ready you are to teach. Also, we lost our daycare!! I have to take my kid to work with me because I cannot work from home (a nightmare). Again, you are right about the school system, but for some there is no way out.

I wish there was a better answer, I am dreading fall!

  9. Why do you all hate teachers so much?

    1. Because teachers make more money than me, have free health insurance and a Paid for retirement plan and have three months off for vacation during the summer and 3 weeks off during Christmas. That’s why. I hate teachers;)

Because they caved in to Common Core
      We hate them

      Any other questions?

    3. Really 1:22....free healthcare? I pay $150 per pay for mine. Paid retirement? I contribute MY money in a 403b plan so it’s not free. I don’t get a free paid vacation. I get paid for 10 months and take money out of each check to cover the other 2 months. Trust me, I am not getting a dime for July and August unless it is MY money.

  14. Hopefully they remotely teach the 504 s and those w/ behavioral issues. wouldn't want the stress and anxiety of Covid affect them. If they do this it would be beautiful and in alignment w/ social distancing.
