It's Time To Start Raising Hell In Maryland

This is Downtown Annapolis, TONIGHT. One of Maryland’s largest cities. Their longest and biggest downtown street closed to car traffic and wide open for pedestrians and outdoor dining. This is precisely what our Governor asked us to do during these “unprecedented” times.

But YET, here in Cambridge, a few members of our city council based out of an abundance of caution from the fire chief, and during a council meeting on Monday, totally and completely PUNTED on the simple issue of closing our smallest street in town - you know the one - Poplar Street. It’s the street that has one of Maryland’s signature breweries - RAR Brewing - it has a French Bistro that is renowned throughout the state Bistro Poplar - it has Jimmie & Sook's, an anchor of our dowtown; and it has Ava's Pizzeria & Wine Bar Cambridge- to name a few. ALL of these restaurants and their employees are suffering!

If Annapolis can somehow figure out how to manage fire response time and public safety in the very heart of our state capitol in their historic downtown on a long multi street block, then we can certainly find a way to close a street that is shorter than a soccer field. FOR god’s sake we even installed overhead lighting to make it beautiful last year! - the solution is staring at us in the face! And we can also close part of RaceStreet to temporarily accommodate Canvasback and Black Water Bakery and Blue Ruin

We are suffering from a lack of imagination and an overabunadance of uneccessary caution in our City government! Our city is failing us when they could use this as our finest hour. We have come too far as a downtown to watch it all fail and come crumbling down. Our restaurant owners and their hundreds of employees are depending on us to do something and we keep kicking the can down the road!!!

Enough is enough! The line must be drawn here! PLEASE EMAIL each and every city council member (go to www.choosecambridge.com) and DEMAND that they start closing the streets to allow outdoor seating. NOW. Raise hell! Before it is too late and we lose everything we have all built together!

  3. what I've noticed throughout the years (and I fully support the FD's BTW) is that they are filled with many insecure people who want to show off and throw their weight around. That is what is going on here. It makes them feel important.

  5. Right now Maryland has the same restaurant regulations as New York City. Let that sink in.

  8. Re: All of the outdoor dining.

Choosing to eat outside because there is a view or attractive surroundings is one thing. But when your only choice is sitting outside with bugs, smells, birds overhead, uncontrolled weather and makeshift accommodations, it is not an actual choice. That's the Governor's fault.

I'm not faulting restauranteers for wanting to get some cash in the till and using their creativity to provide as much as their local or statewide tyrants permit.

    1. Yes you are correct. How sanitary is it sitting in the middle of a street where there has been tons of traffic the week before. Enjoy your $40 entree in the street

  10. The orders are coming from top down.
It is all carefully coordinated to create maximum angst and discomfort.

Consider: What is the real plan?

  13. Just keep following your masters orders and youll be fine. Don't forget that you pay your taxes to live in the most free free country in the whole wide world and that you just love the cops who enforce your masters orders cause they make you feel so safe and warm.
