Combining the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine with the dietary supplement zinc could create a more effective treatment for coronavirus patients, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that taking the drugs together, along with the antibiotic azithromycin, increased patient's chances of being discharged and decreased their risk of dying.
It did not, however, change the average time patients spent in hospital, how long they spent on a ventilator or the total amount of oxygen required.
President Donald Trump has often touted the drug as a 'game-changer' during his press conferences and on Twitter, and the US Food and Drug Administration authorized emergency use of hydroxychloroquine.
The team, from New York University Grossman School of Medicine, says the findings are encouraging but that more studies, including a randomized clinical trial, are needed.

The CBS Evening News on May 14 featured a story talking favorably about hydroxychloroquine used in combination with an antibiotic but used the word only once.
ReplyDeleteLater in the story it was referred to as an "anti-inflammatory drug" and three times as an "immune modulator."
It is because of their clear bias against Trump that they could not bring themselves to give hydroxychloroquine the props it deserves by name for the treatment of COVID-19.
So based on this study it looks like zinc is the real game changer. Zinc has long been known as an immunity booster so it makes sense. Wish they had also compared to patients that didn't get HCQ and Z-pack.
ReplyDeleteThis is all good news. However, patients and families must insist that it be provided!
ReplyDeleteI think what is causing the mixed results is that in places like New York you can only get this drug if you are in the Hospital and already knocking on death's door.
ReplyDeleteIf they would give the drug immediately to those who tested positive then maybe they would not need to go to the hospital in the first place.
Bottom line is they are waiting to long before they prescribe these important medications.
It's all about the money
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is that everyone Democrat or Republican should hope this works. We need good news. Seems as though certain people have been hoping this doesn't work to make a certain someone look bad for being hopeful.
ReplyDelete7:32 exactly. They are giving it too late in a lot of cases.
ReplyDeleteTrump was right.....again..as usual!
