Salisbury Maryland National Folk Festival Canceled

A joint statement from Mayor Jake Day, City of Salisbury, and Lora Bottinelli, executive director, National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA).

The National Folk Festival is an event that fosters the well-being of community through vibrant cultural exchange and the joyous gathering of tens of thousands of people from across the country in celebration of the richness of American culture. The success of this event is rooted in the tremendous community cooperation and collaboration that is shared and cultivated throughout its tenure—from event sponsors to volunteers, from city workers to the festival’s many community partners. The National Folk Festival relies on this goodwill and multiplies it through the success of the festival.

As we look ahead into 2020 and the uncertain future that COVID-19 presents, we realize that the community effort required to support an event of the scope of the National Folk Festival should be refocused to the immediate needs of all of our partners and participants, no matter their location during this global crisis. The responsible thing to do is suspend planning for the 80th National Folk Festival in 2020, and focus those energies toward community health, safety, well-being, and recovery. By suspending event planning for the year, the tremendous wellspring of support, effort, and commitment that this event has fostered can be redirected to the welfare of the Salisbury community and the most pressing needs that have emerged in the region during the public health crisis.

To that end the NCTA and the City of Salisbury are rescheduling the 80th National Folk Festival for September 10-12, 2021, in downtown Salisbury. We feel it is in the community’s best interest to pause our efforts and join others in devoting as many resources as possible toward flattening the curve so that we can return to our normal lives once health officials deem it appropriate to do so. It is disappointing to have to reschedule the festival, but it is necessary. We hope all of our supporters understand why we have come to this difficult decision.

Additional details for sponsors, artists, vendors, contractors, and volunteers will be available from the National Folk Festival leadership team in the weeks to come.

  1. Jake Day you make my blood run cold. You are such a loser of a mayor. Trying to fool all your constituents. You are using these poor folks for what you think is your next step in the political arena. To think you are using the army to further your career. The worst part of all is you are a wife abuser. Do you know what that means Domestic Violence! A little man who physically and emotionally abuses his wife. Shame on you!

  7. A little early to cancel. So Now kooky Caroline is focused on Covid assistance? Are she and the Mayor going to deliver food and supplies to PRMC while they are at 1/2 capacity and not testing family members of folks that have tested positive. My friends that work there are embarrassed with all the food delivery because they are slow and have a cafeteria.

  12. I want to know where the grant money from the state is going to be used for now (A few months ago Hogan granted monies to some towns and cities that was to be used for neighborhood improvements; Jake earmarked the money for the festival)??? Keep a watchful eye.

    1. Um...maybe you should follow the news. If you did, you would know that the state is projecting a 2 billion dollar shortfall in revenues and massive budget cuts. There will be NO grant money to dole out.

    2. I'm sure Day's grant money was already in the budget.

My question - does Salisbury pay for another year of Folk Festival? What is the contact (years) and what changes have been made - money wise?

By the way Jake why are you wearing a band on your right ring finger and not on your left ring finger where wedding bands go? Did she finally leave your ass???

  21. Jake Day is using this opportunity to cancel the Folk Festival to look like its failure and demise is due to the virus and not his fault. It was a failure from day 1. No one but freeloaders went to it anyway. It's not my job as a taxpayer to subsidize that $hitfest in da Ghetto'bury.

    ReplyDelete

  22. Not a would-be planner, event organizer or amateur chowhound, but does this mean we slow down the drownabout construction and tearing up the Plaza so the hundreds of thousands of FolkedFest attendees get to experience a few festive days in the 'bury the way it was originally envisioned? Asking for a friend.

  23. So, does this mean that Caroline O'Hare is now out of a job?

I think it's time for Jake Day and the City to wash their hands of this dismal failure. Time to send Caroline and Dan O'Hairless packing.

  25. Downtown should be closed. Both market street and mojos arnt following the guidelines and no one cares. There were at least 20 people drinking at mojos last friday. Some woman posted on facebook under https://www.facebook.com/groups/548820522434027/permalink/570918600224219/
And they got to the page admin to stop people from posting.

Joe...create a post having people sending you photos. Offer a reward I'll be the first to contribute to the keep salisbury safe fund. Both those places got their bail outs and are now trying to get every red cent they can. They both lost our business and at least a few dozen I've spoken to.

  28. blessing in disguise as now we will not have to pay AGAIN to have the street paved and then ripped up 3 days later.

I heard that big sign of relief jake made all the way over here in fruityland.

big question is, as per the contract we pay for it either way whether it goes on or not - so what is it, are we paying for a festival that isn't happening or is there a waiver on the 1+ million we owe for performers already booked - per their CONTRACTS.

Funny how none of that is mentioned in his feel good BS presser

  30. There never were tens of thousands that attended these festivals, it was only the bees buzzing in Jake's head. But I am glad that someone made him come to his senses and realize the festival was a no go. I would strongly recommend to the mayor and council if they ever consider doing this again that they pick a better location off the main streets of Salisbury. They do not need to bottle neck traffic any worse than has already been done in Salisbury, and it would be better in an open location in a country area where festival visitors could spread out and children could run and play with out danger of drowning or being run over in traffic. You have plenty of time to come up with a better location and then there would be less criticism from the public and city residents. THINK.

If you were you wouldn’t mention his future plans for fear of reprisals. If he is sent to war then they have big plans for him. Remember, those who are compromised (embarrassing situations, homosexuality, drugs) always get promoted in politics. They can be easily controlled.

  38. A built in excuse to not hold host what is the most asinine thing any official has ever come up with. This "festival" was nothing but a huge waste of money and sby elected officials should be ashamed of themselves for ever doing this idiotic thing. But they aren't because not one has the brains to have figured out they were sold a bunch of crap No one in Sby benefited from this at all and if sby officials had a moral drop of blood in their moronic bodies they would admit their stupidity.
