Preventing unrest in the so-called Mezzogiorno, the underdeveloped southern region that’s long lagged behind the wealthy north, has become the government’s top priority, according to Italian officials who asked not to be named discussing the administration’s strategy.

Officially (and what our government wants us to believe), they are there "to assist in delivering necessary medical supplies".

The truth is they are patrolling and stationed on virtually every corner in that part of town.
The local CVS (looted three times during the latest riot), has a permanent, 'round the clock contingent of at least 20 National Guard stationed there 24/7.
