Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods shutters two more meat processing plants

Chinese-owned meat packing giant Smithfield Foods has closed two additional plants in the U.S. after coronavirus outbreaks, raising concerns about the American food supply chain.

Smithfield announced the closures of packing plants in Cudahy, Wisconsin and Martin City, Missouri on Wednesday, days after its Sioux Falls, South Dakota plant was indefinitely shuttered.

The Sioux Falls plant, where 518 employees and 120 of their family members have tested positive for coronavirus, is now the largest single source of cases in the U.S., and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has dispatched a critical response team to the scene.

Smithfield said in a statement that a 'small number of employees' at both the Cudahy and the Martin City plants had tested positive for the virus, without offering further details.

Union members at the Cudahy plant criticized the company last month for continuing to operate after the union said two employees tested positive for coronavirus.

  3. I don't know if this will get printed. I don't want to be an alarmist. But it sure feels like we have been attacked by China. We need to boycott China is an understatement. I add that I never knew China owned Smithfield.

  4. It was a big deal when they bought them around 10 years ago. I couldn't believe a company that large could be purchased by a communist country within our own boarders.

  5. We will most definitely find out things we never knew through all this. If it cost you more to buy something but it is American, spend the extra dollar or two.

  8. Northwest Woodsman: Who knows about pigs, but 1:38, live Chinese do! What are doing and how stupid are we to allow the most dangerous enemy to this country to own and operate facilities that produce the food and other necessities of life. We must stand up and eliminate this threat. Nationalize all of their US assets and then return them to private owners here in the US. It really angers me to see made in China on almost every product we buy. That is especially true of Walmart, Harbor Freight and many others we are not aware of. I’m angered every time I see or buy a product with a name like Chicago Electric or Pittsburg Tools when they are just using those names to deceive naive purchasers. Numerous businesses had to move their operations to China and other Asian countries in order to be competitive. The costs of labor and their benefits extorted ( for lack of a better word) by unions were partially responsible and then, of course corporate greed must also be factored in.
The subversive intent of the Chinese, as well as other third world tribes find it easy to deceive most of us and rely on the cooperation of others of us who are determined to destroy the country by any means. Either they don’t foresee the consequences in the future or they don’t care.

Anybody have a clue what's up or know of one still alive for carry out?
