Olive Garden hostess, 16, resigns and plans to sue after manager granted customer's racist demands to have a white server

A 16-year-old student has resigned from her job as an Olive Garden hostess after she says she was harassed by her coworkers for calling out workplace discrimination.

Amira Donahue and an unidentified server both claim they were targeted with racial discrimination last month when a white woman at the restaurant in Evansville, Indiana, demanded 'a server that wasn't black' - and the manager granted the request.

The chain revealed that that they had fired the location's manager after learning how they handled the altercation.

But Amira says that after the manager was terminated, her co-workers began making derogatory comments about her.

  3. Ever got a white guy hair cut from an African American woman? Doesn't come out quite like you would want it... And it's not they stylists fault!
    If this white woman is racist and asks for someone else, congratulations! You didn't have to wait on a racist that would have given you a hard time. Instead she stirred the pot, lost her job, got her manager fired, and is looking for a payout.

    All she had to do was move on

    The manager was screwed no matter what choice he made and she was too stupid to realize that and only thought of herself, instead of realizing his predicament and graciously saying, give the table to someone else and I will take the next one, she made a stink and the racist won.

    If we're going to generalize, I'd say I get better service from young black servers in restaurants than young white girls. Young black adults want their jobs.

    Too many times lately I've sat for too long before a young white girl will come over to take my order. She brings back my drink then I never see her again until well after I'm eating. A runner will bring my food out and quickly disappear and I sit there without a drink refill for the rest of my meal. I finish my food and have to sit and sit before girl will come back to bring my check. Too often I see these young girls just chit-chatting with co-workers w/o a care in the world. Helping customers is a hindrance to their socializing. Young kids today just think they are supposed to get paid just for hanging out.

    Did you guys not read that not only did the manager not throw the customer out, which is what should have happened, but then the hostess was still harassed by co-workers. All because she's black. Come on, who can defend those actions?

    1. I’m a Democrat so your comment is tone deaf ... nobody is saying it’s nice but if she wanted a white server is it a big deal ? I worked in the industry and had black customers ask for a black server and I didn’t care

    2. Yes, which is why this young lady will win her case or be paid out. I thought that whole civil rights act and other laws/legal cases pretty much made this clear. Guess not.the point is, if you only want to be served by whites, eat at home! Some of us want to work and earn money no matter who the customer or server isn how novel.

    One pissed off customer will tell ten friends and they tell ten friends and before you know it your business is suffering.

    One employee whines so what, fire them or tell them to suck it up.

  13. If the customer wanted a white waitress/server, she should have gone to another restaurant. This is ridiculous and so idiotic. This is 2020 America. It is a terrible thing what we do to each other; very disappointed in that "white" customer.

  16. The woman (don’t know if she was Asian or white) was being ignorant. The manager made the right call. Why force a black waitress to be subject to her nastiness and mistreatment?

    Best solution, would be the manager take that table him or herself. And invite the hateful woman to never set foot there again.

  17. I've been to a Denny's and locally at an IHop restaurant and was discriminated because I was white. At Denny's my order was taken and the then forgotten, after almost an hour I confronted her and she said my order was lost, but the black couple in the table next to me arrived after me and they were served before me.

    The next time was at the Fruitland IHop. The black hostess ignored my wife and I when we were waiting for a table, and when we got a table, they put us at a small table next to the kitchen where people were coming and going.

    The service was slow and I had to hunt down the waitress who was also black to get my bill. This was right after they opened in South Salisbury, and we haven't been back since. I also let them them know when I filled out the survey.

    So I can understand how this customer feels. It's his money and if they don't want to serve him, he can go elsewhere. Regardless of the waitress, I go where the service and food is good.

    The Deli at Pecan Square or the Delmar Diner are good examples where you can get a good meal and great service and they appreciate your business.

    Its a no win situation for the Manager, even if he took the table himself.

    Sure this stuff shouldn't happen but it does and making a stink isn't going to change the customer. You do the best you can and them move on, not whine about it. Waitress just learned a great life lesson if she would quit crying and playing the victim.

    Instead of evaluating the situation and handling it proactively she made a stink and everyone got screwed.

    This is life. Stuff happens. Get over it and move on.

  20. I feel bad for the manager. He did his waitress a favor by not having her wait on ignorant customers. Does anyone think he could have really asked the customers to leave because of their request? That would have only created a bigger scene. I can only assume that the waitress or hostess who reported him and got him fired is spiteful and narrow minded. No wonder other employees had little respect for her, She played the victim. Black or white, we’re ALL discriminated against. And sometimes in ways much bigger than simply not getting to wait on people that don’t deserve your service. Be gracious. Be kind. There are more decent people in this world than bigots. And now a manager is unemployed. People need to stop being victims. It speaks volumes about the likelihood of your succeeding in life. Be strong. Rise above small-minded people. People will see that in you and you will go much further in life and be more respected by everyone.
