Md. lawmaker wants slowpokes out of left lane

Maryland State Delegate Neil Parrott (R-2A) drives on Interstate 70 enough to know “no one in Maryland knows that you should stay to the right” while driving on a multilane highway.

“[It’s] the wild, wild West when you’re on I-70,” said Parrott, of Hagerstown. “Some people are passing on the far right lane.”

Parrott is pushing a bill that would encourage drivers to stay in the right lanes unless they are passing. Parrott, who owns his own traffic consulting business, hopes his bill will, to some degree, make things a little more orderly on the roads.

Let's just legalize pushing a slowpoke out of the way. And if they speed up on you when trying to pass, you are allowed to run them off the road. Same for when they slow down or speed up to block you in. Brake checks get a brick through the windshield. Same for when they pull in front of you and are not going correct speed.

  6. Get real. The left lane is for through traffic, not just for passing. If you stay in the right lane while approaching an off ramp, all you idiots that are racing to the exit will pass you and cut you off right at the ramp. And all of you know that I'm talking about YOU! See it every day, no exaggeration. Every day. Most exit signs will designate the left lane as through traffic and the right lane for exit traffic. But the idiots that want to pass everybody and cut off the drivers in the left lane to get to the exit are the real hazards to traffic safety.

If you are not actively passing a vehicle you are required to be in the right lane. It is not your job to impede the flow of traffic for any reason. Incentivize speeding? That's none of your concern either. Your actions incentivize road rage. Keep to the right. Try reading articles. It's obvious you and others didn't read a driver's manual.

  12. Common practice and most law on United States highways is that the left lane is reserved for passing and faster moving traffic, and that traffic using the left lane must yield to traffic wishing to overtake.

The United States Uniform Vehicle Code states:

Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...

It is also illegal in many states in the US to use the "far left" or passing lane on a major highway as a traveling lane (as opposed to passing), or to fail to yield to faster moving traffic that is attempting to overtake in that lane.

  13. or to fail to yield to faster moving traffic that is attempting to overtake in that lane.

That means if someone is behind you, move the heck over and let them go. C-O-U-R-T-E-S-Y.

  14. So if the posted speed limit is 55 and you are doing 70 in the left lane but the car behind you wants to go faster are you suppose to slow down to 55 and get in the right lane?

Read what you post. "any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic" That doesn't mean everybody has to get out of the way of the driver that wants to drive 20 MPH over the speed limit. The jerks on here that want to you do that are the ones complaining about the ones in their way. If you are driving the speed limit or above, you have no obligation to get out of the way of a maniac that think they have a "right" to drive 80 MPH. It's that simple.

another vehicle going in the same direction, there
is a traffic signal designating it is okay to do so, or
there is an obstruction that makes it necessary to

  19. Say Mr. Law maker. If that speed limit signs says 65 mph what does that really mean to you? Does it mean that posted speed is just for the right hand lane? Then it must mean that the left hand lane must be for those drivers who want to go 75-80 mph because that's what is happening So instead of punishing the lawbreakers you want to make a new law that will punish those drivers following the law. Mr. Republican lawmaker you need to change your party to Democrat because that's the justification they use.

  20. I learned long ago that you never know what someone is going through. The law says to stay in the right lane unless you are passing or turning left shortly. That person driving over the speed limit may just be speeding or maybe they’re on the way to an emergency. You don’t know and it’s not your job to police them. As well, does the fact they’re breaking the law by speeding justify you staying in the left lane, against drivers’ rule, to slow them down? No it doesn’t. 2 wrongs don’t make a right.

It doesn't matter what you say or think, it is already illegal to drive in the passing lane if you are not passing. Please pass a law that makes it difficult for them to ever want to drive in that lane again.

But I see what I expect from Eastern Shore drivers. Everybody thinks they are an expert in traffic laws. And then they post a comment.....

  41. @ March 16, 2020 at 3:25 PM. The law also states that anyone not able to drive the posted SPEED LIMIT for some reason, must stay in the right lane. They did not make the extra lanes for passing, they made them to handle the increased flow of traffic. Speed limit signs are on BOTH sides of the road. Plus people who exceed the speed limit STAY in the left lane also. What about those morons? State Police used to have a slogan, Drive 55 and stay alive. Because of so many accidents caused by those idiots who think they can drive as fast as they want.
