Sheriffs fight bill on immigration questioning

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WBFF) - Maryland legislators are once again debating legislation which would restrict how local law enforcement officers and corrections officials handle illegal immigrants.

The bill would prohibit local police from questioning detainees about their immigration status.

But several sheriffs from Maryland and elsewhere converged on Annapolis to voice their opposition to the measure.

During a news conference, Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins said to prohibit law enforcement agencies from inquiring about a detainee's immigration status puts the public at risk.

"These policies are dangerous restrictions on law enforcement and corrections, local public safety, and homeland security depend on the exchange of information. When we do that, we make the streets safer, we make your communities safer," said Sheriff Jenkins.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis says, "We want to make Maryland a sanctuary state, a haven for drug dealers, drug distributors and drug traffickers? It’s not going to happen on our watch. Come hell or high water, we will stand our ground.”

  5. At least he said something, more than most will do, did anybody hear testify against this or any other Bill? Call or email your representative? Make time to fight the corruption now before its too late. The corrupt leaders in md and other hostile states are planning to bring illegal votes and yes the crime, these mixed with thwarting constitutional rights could lead to chaos and uprisings. They are hoping for lots of chaos before the election. The more discord and division, all the better to blame on Trump. We in md have suffered under no representation for decades. Like VA, the employees of all those government jobs are what keep corrupt representatives in office. WE must fight HARD the good fight, change tactics, stand firm, stand your ground. PRAY HARD. Pray for accountability, Pray for strict scrutiny rulings by the supreme court. Pray for good moral leaders to come foreword. PRAY.
