Montgomery County Council passes air conditioning bill

It’ll be a lot cooler this summer in Montgomery County, Maryland — at least for the roughly 300,000 people who rent.

After approving amendments to a bill requiring that landlords provide air conditioning to their tenants, the Montgomery County Council voted unanimously to pass Bill 24-19.

  3. Look for rent increases that will fully cover installation costs, plus a hefty inconvenience fee. Electric bills may double, triple or even quadruple to operate these units. It's a good bet that some landlords will forego safety for savings and put tenants at risk.

  6. They might have to provide the air conditioner, but they don't have to pay the utility bill. If they do, then the rent will be raised on the tenants. Good intentions can have negative consequences. Typical democrat legislation.

  7. Window fans work just fine, floor fans if it’s really hot. Hopefully they didn’t specify the whole house has to be air conditioned, just a window unit in one room.
