Amazon seeks $4.5M state grant for Boxwood LogistiCenter

NEWPORT – Amazon, the e-commerce retail giant, is seeking a $4.5 million grant from the state to move into a new multistory distribution center to be built at the former General Motors Boxwood plant.

The request filed Feb. 17 with the Delaware Economic Development Authority’s Council of Development Finance said that Amazon needed the taxpayer-supplied Strategic Fund monies to “establish its operations in Wilmington, Delaware.” It was not listed on the CDF’s initial agenda for the Feb. 24 meeting released Feb. 10.

The company already employs more than 2,500 people at distribution centers in New Castle and Middletown, as well as a truck yard in the state, but it is now seeking to occupy a next-generation facility being built by Nevada-based developer Dermody Properties on the old automotive manufacturing plant site.

  2. "Amazon, the ubiquitous purveyor of two-day delivery of just about everything, nearly doubled its profits to $11.2 billion in 2018 from $5.6 billion the previous year and, once again, didn’t pay a single cent of federal income taxes."

And once again, they want the TAXPAYERS who DID pay taxes to subsidize their operation.

And it probably will happen, won't it?

  4. Amazon should beg taxpayers to open a warehouse? Their profits are discraceful. He can give billions to Climate change and totally destroy the environment by cutting down massive amounts of trees for his oversized boxes and now wants you the taxpayers to support his organization. This mid -life crazy person needs to be stopped.

  5. A "grant" is a prettier word for tax payer dollars. Jeff Bezos is worth billions of dollars. His company paid NO federal taxes in the last nine years and he wants the tax payers to help him with his business?
If this is approved then those who voted to give the richest man in America need to be removed from office.
