This was not humane at all, if too many in this area couldn't they have waited till the birth and maybe given them to a bird sanctuary where they could have grown and then been re-located. I agree this is appalling and not necessary.

DeleteThey are not migratory if they are laying eggs and nesting here they are resident geese. There habitat can only sustain so many therefore the culling is very necessary. There is much more to it educate yourself about the problem.

Most permits are issued to destroy nests and to oil and addle eggs.

ReplyDeleteIt's the most humane way to deal with the situation folks. Ocean Pines had to capture and euthanize 200+ adult geese last year. I think the zoo employees are well educated on methods of population control and conservation. There's nothing illegal or wrong about it. This particular lady found it sad, that's all.
ReplyDeleteAt least with euthanasia, they don’t know it’s about to happen. In this situation, a mother goose who has motherly instinct, watched someone destroy her eggs and now doesn’t k ow what to do! Just incredibly sad! I agree population control is important and a must, but ugh! Not this way.

ReplyDeleteMaybe a group that wants to protect geese should buy several acres of land and move some of the geese to their lands. Instead of expecting others to share their view. Population control is needed to limit the geese. If the zoo would do their control after hours they wouldn't have to justify their actions to snowflakes.

When the ZOO puts out 140 pounds of duck chow, (food) on the river feeders, WHAT DO THEY EXPECT? THEY are the ones not only attracting the geese to the Zoo area, they're encouraging them to stick around all year long so they don't have to PURCHASE and CONTROL other water fowl. Many of the geese being fed at the zoo become victims of other animals killing and eating them in confined areas. They should've done this after hours and not in the public's eye, especially in front of children. Again, the Zoo is attracting them by feeding them, so I don't want to hear about over population.
ReplyDeleteThey are not migratory geese. They are not even Canada geese. They are a hybrid of Canada and Great Western geese. If you look closely they are substantially larger than a true migratory Canada goose. All they do is hang around, eat and poop. True, they are protected but that is because government is not too bright, not because they actually need protecting.

Snow goose overpopulation has destroyed the nesting grounds in Canada. Perfect habitat here on the shore at the park and most other parks golf courses and wastewater ponds in every housing development.lets fix the real problem not complain about the issue the big problem has caused.

They’re aggressive, they can crap up to 4 pounds a day EACH- not to mention all of the parasites and diseases their poop can have. Salisbury is over ridden with those things!!! I used to live there and there would be 35+ in the yard every day, just eating, crapping, and breeding. Every time I go to Salisbury I see them everywhere, they are an invasive species and NOT a protected species anymore. They have little to no benefit to the area and their numbers are continuously rising. I’m all for the population control like a lot more should be. Not to be rude, but it’s the best way. Would you rather see chicks being killed? Hunted? Smash the eggs. Salisbury zoo you do what you have to.

Took my granddaughter to the Salisbury zoo a few years back. The geese where every where. Crap all over. I too feel that the eggs could have been disposes another way. When you break a breakfast egg the mother hen isn't there to see. Children seeing the eggs destroyed by a human with a pen don't

ReplyDeleteThis is wrong. I understand population control however this could have been handled differently. Their are a lot of things that need to be looked into at the zoo. For example proper feeding of the animals and proper space for them to move around. Not small little areas like they have now.
ReplyDeleteThe zoo might have a permit to do this, but I think that it would have been better not to do this in front of visitors. I know that the man who farms the land behind us actually has a permit to shoot the geese for eating his crops, so it doesn't surprise me that the zoo is allowed to dispose of the eggs. It might be better not to do it in front of visitors though.

ReplyDeleteFYI....poking a hole in the eggs indicates to the bird they are no longer any good,she will just start a again,had the eggs been shaken/ addled she would continue to set on them until she just gave up...if you leave one to hatch ,a few days after hatching she will abandon the nest and the other eggs to care for her only hatchling...but what does this old farm boy know.....

People, almost all brands of eggs you buy at the grocery store are unfertilized. Thus the eggs you eat for breakfast will never create a chicken, they will only just rot if not eaten. This is because the hen has never had the pleasure of love making before laying her egg. Birds & Bees 101. Yes, the Zoo could have had more couth than killing the goose eggs in front of innocent children. The children will learn soon enough what an unfair, harsh, dog eat dog world this is. DeleteSmallsbury is lucky to have the Salisbury Zoo in it’s community. This community has little to offer and for those of us who took our children to the zoo when they were young, we are grateful for its existence. Seeing this ridiculous debate makes me sad about the society we now live in. Perhaps the zoo made a mistake by performing this necessary task in front of visitors, but is it really necessary to attack them publicly when they do so much good for the community? Why does everything have to be a public debate? If a family witnessed these eggs being pinned, they should have privately contacted the zoo and explained what they saw. I am POSITIVE the zoo leadership would have been apologetic and looked into the matter. Making it public is simply people with nothing to do but complain, try to make themselves seem important. So sad. If you have an issue, be a grown-up and address it directly, not through Joe’s blog or Facebook.

I find it a little hypocritical that you are concerned about the geese but you are there to observed various animals locked in cages for your entertainment. What about all the beef,seafood,veal, turkeys etc.. that end up on your plate. I don't think they line up at the killing stations so you can have Sunday dinner. Mouth breathers at the very least and Libtards for sure. This is why we are so screwed up as a society. All those mentioned meats have a place in this world it is right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy. As for the Zoo stop doing stupid crap in front of the kids. ReplyDeleteThe zoo sucks and always has. I hated going there as a kid. Mangy Bears then the Oliphant family donated that poor baby elephant Ollie and people fed it dirt until it croaked. Then those nasty spitting Lama's that poor Leopard that paced it's self to death in that compound. The masterbating Monkeys. The Zoo is actually quite reflective of the quality of life around here. Go to any farm around here and you will see animals better cared for and your next MEAL. OINK. It's always been a dusty stinky miserable place and we all have heard what went on in the Bamboo thrushes after hours.
