The following is a statement from Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan (9-29-19)

"What took place this past weekend in Ocean City can never happen again. This group came to town with the sole purpose to raise havoc in our community, to disrupt our lives and defy law enforcement. They placed our town, as well as our citizens and visitors. under siege and in danger which is unacceptable under any circumstances. Our town government, citizens, property owners and businesses must join together as one voice to take whatever action is necessary to stop this group from returning. This isn’t about just one weekend this is about our future.

I cannot say enough about the men and women of the Ocean City Police Department, the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police, Maryland Transportation Police and the other allied agencies that were here this weekend. They went far beyond the call of duty in their attempts to enforce the law and to protect our community while at the same time placing themselves in harm’s way.

The Mayor and City Council must immediately begin working with Police Chief Buzzuro, City Manager Doug Miller and State Agencies to put a plan in place to stop this ciaos. All potential actions should be considered. This includes, but should not be limited to, declaring a State of Emergency. I plan to speak with the Governor this week to discuss this in detail and ask for his assistance.

We cannot let what happened in Ocean City this weekend define us as a community. This must stop and it must stop now."

-Mayor Rick Meehan

  5. Something tells me that Rick Meehan read this berating comment on your post about this. If he was any kind of leader he would have been better prepared for this weekend and he would have had more aggressive steps in place for Saturday after the big failure he faced on Friday night! Shame on Rick Meehan, Shame on Ocean Cities town council, shame on Ocean Cities Chief of Police, shame on Ocean Cities elected Sheriff.

I will also place blame on Worcester County Sheriff Matt Crisafulli. The elected sheriff is the highest-ranking police officer in the county and he failed to act. The last time I checked Ocean City is a part of Worcester County and Matt Crisafulli has is the highest jurisdictional official, not the mayor and not the police chief. Matt Crisafulli, you FAILED the citizens and visitors of Ocean City and Worcester County! I know Mike McDermott would have done a better job as Sheriff!

The police agencies I saw there were OCPD, Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police, Maryland Transit Authority Motor Units and the Worcester County Sheriff's Office.

Shame on the Mayor and Council and the Police Chief for not asking for more resources from other allied police agencies. They should have had the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office and Wicomico County Detention Center officers there. Wicomico County has over 100 vacant beds at their jail so they had plenty of room to lock their asses up. Why didn't the request help from the Berlin PD, the Ocean Pines PD, the Snow Hill PD, the Pocomoke PD, the Princess Anne PD, the UMES PD, the Salisbury University PD, the Salisbury PD, Pittsville PD🤣, the Delmar PD, or the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office?

Shame on Ocean City for allowing so much distress to the people who didn't know these punks were going to be there. Shame on Ocean City for allowing so much distress to the people who attended the Ocean City Wine Festival. That police chief needs to be fired and everyone currently sitting as Ocean City Mayor and Council needs to resign.

I will say this much. Kudos to the Maryland State Police Officers who didn't put up with their sh!t. They made the OCPD look like a bunch of Girl Scouts.

All the folks calling for the National Guard are 100% off-base.
First of all, what the hell would they do? Give out tickets?
Secondly: It would be HORRIBLE PR for OC to have to do that.
    Lastly, and most importantly:
You let this crowd know that the Town is bringing in the troops for this event and it will draw not only the H2Oi crowd, but every person looking to be a part of it.
    Think I'm wrong?
In 1969 we had absolutely NO plans on traveling to College Park for the Anti-War rally. Then we found out the National Guard would be there.
We jumped in the car, drove down, and had the time of our lives getting chased and harassed by the Guard.

  33. Mr. Mayor:

Here is the very simple answer to the problem:
    This H2Oi event is unsanctioned.
I suggest OC sanction a "Car Safety Weekend".
(Being somewhat of a Libertarian, it pains me to suggest the following, but drastic situations take drastic measures.)
Randomly select cars for a "Safety Check" as they enter the town. (Think DUI Checkpoints.)
Include ALL types of vehicles for the "random" safety check just so you are being fair, just as they do with the DUI checkpoints.
Go over the cars completely. Those deemed "unsafe" will immediately be impounded, due to being unsafe for the road.
    Have tow trucks ready.
You KNOW that something could (and would) be found that is unsafe or illegal.
Explain to the driver that we are doing this as a favor to the driver of the car, as well as to any people that may be in danger due to an unsafe car.
You may even add 'sponsors' to "Car Safety Weekend" to supply free and discounted coupons (and advertising) from any participating businesses, and hand them out as a "thank you" for being so patient during the safety check.
This won't weed ALL the crazies out, but a very good percentage would be impounded I'm sure.
Plus, when word gets out that your car could be confiscated before you get into town because of those over-tinted windows (and other things), they will certainly think twice about coming.

Crime no not that bad is still bad here, hiding your head in the sand and Duncan only showing up for selfies and photo opportunities is not getting it. Day and Duncan have to go and fast. Can we have a slot on the ballots next month where the citizens can have a vote on getting rid of our chief of Police in addition to Day's last day? When you live on a street that there are cops at the same house 3-4 X a week and no charges there is a problem. I would like to see things the way they were even a year ago until these rental properties are checked for how many per dwelling actually living there and I dn't mean census counters. If you look at the city streets they are lined with cars bumper to bumper, street after street, common sense would tell you the houses are over occupied. Check how many untagged vehicles, abandoned vehicles for as much as a year and never moved. Houses with more than 1 electrical box tell you what? With multiple dishes on the rooves what does it tell you? When the water is cut off, and on, and off and so on. When there are appliances in the yards, sofas, chairs and all kinds of house furniture in the yard what does it say. Coding and Compliance what are you doing?

  50. It is very easy to be critical of the OC government and the police agencies involved - it is also easy to be critical of marketing that OC has done. The truth is that the problem is here, and given the very poor behavior of the participants in this situation, there is only one real solution. Annapolis must respond in a manner that is reflective of law. Pressure must be put upon the legislators to review their foolish indignation. If law enforcement does not have the tools it needs to suppress this outlandish behavior, it will indeed continue. I am a property owner in OC and ocean pines, and I personally saw this coming for the last three years as it has built up to the fevered pitch that occurred this weekend. Our property was significantly damaged, and I personally felt that this weekend would be unsafe. I kept my family in the pines, and am unfortunately surveying the damage now. Multiple properties had significant issues around and including mine. We do not rent, and only share time in our places with family, I do not know what the answer is - I only know what the costs are, and I am personally selling off our condo to get out of this. It’s not worth it, but I will say that the LEOs I saw were vigilant, upheld their duty, and were good stewards of the local trust. To each of them, you have my respect and thanks. Unfortunately, they can only do so much. Two OCPD officers live close by to me, and I personally saw them after the facts of the last two days in church - they were just exhausted. Mike and Jimmy, thank you. To the rest of the LEOs I do not know, I extend my thanks for your tireless efforts.

  51. I know most everyone associated with the OC town government is well compensated compared to the surrounding municipalities, and I mean WELL! Nice to see what the citizens get for all the money being paid to these fools! of course, they did vote em in! lmao!

No they didn't. Someone reported they had one but they posted pictures about an hour later. No one can get arrested and processed that quick! OCPD found no gun.

  53. They'll say why were the cops in "riot" helmets. Well, it's the closest official uniform headgear component for cranium protection from impacts.

    ReplyDelete
  54. No matter WHAT measures OC invested in, they were ineffectual. This isn't new to this town. In fact, it's old as far as blaming the cause. They continue to plan based solely on their Council committees (in spite of paying people with skills to do just that).

There is a GREAT BIG piece of property OC owns know as Park N Ride in West OC that sits idle most of the year. It would make for a great impoundment lot.

  55. Hope these cars were confiscated, permanently. They were used as dangerous weapons and they should never get them back. That's one way to keep these pathetic loser thugs from coming back and doing this again. And lengthy jail time.

  56. Anyone familiar with Black Bike Week in Myrtle Beach years ago? Got so bad that one year the town just closed all of the businesses for that week. Maybe OC should try that next year. Seemed to work for them.

Placing blame on any law enforcement official is ridiculous! All agencies banded together and did the best they could. Legally, you cannot keep these cars out of town. To blame the Chief, Sheriff, or any law enforcent personnel is asinine. OCPD, WCSO, MSP, NRP, and other agencies had the town saturated. With something this huge, I think they did a great job!
REMEMBER....the Sheriffs dept. Patrols ALL of Worcester County! They did have officers in OC and were doing a great job keeping the rest of the county safe...these kids and their cars were EVERYWHERE..not just in the town limits of OC!!! I saw numerous WCSO vehicles in other parts of the county...in full force...ensuring everyone was safe! Shame on any of you that didn't think they did a great job!!! These kids and their cars were coming regardless and law enforcement was prepared and did a great job given the scope of this non-sanctioned event!
The people of Worcester County elected the right Sheriff!! Sheriff Crisafulli is doing an outstanding job! He is personally out and about in the communities talking to citizens hearing their concerns and doing something about them! Keep up the good work!

the haters on here have no clue why is it the mayors fault of these idiots actions

    September 29, 2019 at 12:31 PM

Why is it his/their fault? Because he failed to lead, he failed to act. He put the lives of all those police officers in danger because they had to deal with thousands of unruly crowds who were cursing them, threatening them and throwing things at them. This is very dangerous and Rick Meehan needs to step down.

I think it was Matt defending himself. He is nothing more than a glorified school resource officer and that is all he will ever be. Hopefully, are real police officer will run for Sheriff in 3 years.

Last time I checked, my name isn't Amy, but if it makes you feel better to think you know who I am...ok because you seem like a really smart guy! (That was a joke)
This topic was started because people were concerned about these kids wreaking havoc on our county not about your OBVIOUS political agenda!! Um...everyone eats lunch and sits on their couch after work...and by the sound of it...you sit on your couch a lot!!
I don't know where you live and frankly don't care, but I have seen plenty of sheriffs dept. vehicles, but thats not what this is about, is it??
Did you drive through the county and into OC at all this weekend? My guess is NO due to your ignorant response. If you had been in OC you would have seen the hard work all of the agencies did this weekend!!
So, stop acting like you care about the taxpayers and get over the fact that you and your buddies are sore losers! Why don't you go do something better with your time like...volunteer or do some good for our county instead of bashing law enforcement and crying on your couch that your friend lost!

  66. I think I have read hundreds of comments on Social Media where many citizens are very dissatisfied with the lack of planning and the lack of reacting after the dangerous situation on Friday night and not beefing up the police force for Saturday. They are mad and Rick Meehan and the entire OC town council. Yes, that includes you, Mary.

  67. Love the guns drawn on the girl with little to no clothes on. Where exactly did the officers think she was hiding her weapon? The more of a keystone cop routine we put up, the more this is an attraction or event to these people. There are only 3 road into OC 90,50, and Coastal Highway coming south. It would take far less resources keeping them out than chasing them around. Stop every car coming into town. Live here cool. Have a reservation cool. This ain't rocket science.

  70. More evidence of a generation gone rogue. ANTIFA, H2O, "The Squad"; what's next? I am a little older and remember the days of the SDS, Black Panthers, SLA, and of course the "hippie" movement in protest of the Viet Nam war. Is history repeating itself? Our country degraded when the "make love not war" movement ravaged the country. Like today, law enforcement was chided and disrespected and the theme was anti establishment. Again...is history repeating itself?

Stop talking - don’t give away your strategy
Governor - get guard troops to work with MSP at 113/ VA line, 54/MD line and at the bay bridge working with transit authority - idea is to turn them around on violations
Legislature - develop a drivers lic revocation option for 6 months to a year
Additional guard troops to assist in LEO efforts in OC with a strong presence

Get out a press release of any changes to the special event zone and publicize that the police from several agencies will be there.... keep everything else quiet, and then drop the hammer on the whole lot of them with no mercy at all - impound the cars at owners expense, fine the life out of them, and take their drivers lic

In short Rick, keep it under wraps

What do you think they couls have dine between Friday and Saturday? Do you even know wh9 the OC Police Chief is? They did a great job under the circumstances. Any further action has to come from Annapolis if that can even happen. Yeah great idea blaming the sheriff too.

    September 30, 2019 at 12:44 AM

You are dum dumb as Hell and your grammar shows it.

"Any further action has to come from Annapolis if that can even happen."

No Dummy, it's called Mutual Aid. "Any further action" only requires asking for assistance from neighboring police agencies you big dummy! As mentioned in another post there is Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, Somerset County Sheriff's Office, more resources from Worcester County, after all Ocean City IS Worcester County, the Berlin PD, Ocean Pines PD, Snow Hill PD, Pocomoke PD, Princess Anne PD, Salisbury PD, Delmar PD, UMES PD, Salisbury University PD and Even the Delaware State Police. If you don't know what you are talking about then STFU!!

No demonizing them is what has emboldened them. This is the generation of pointless rebellion. "If you don't want us we will bring more people next year". All OC has to do is start and road repair projects they plan on doing for the entire winter the weekend before. These cars ride an inch off the ground. Let them tear their bumpers off, stop giving them free press and they will be gone by 2021 guaranteed.

    September 30, 2019 at 12:56 AM

Another dumb comment. The idea is to keep Ocean City open and family-friendly for the real visitors who spend money. Don't create problems to make everyone miserable. All you have to do is get special legislation passed to lock these ANTIFA thugs up and impound their cars. While doing that make sure you have more police agencies assisting you like you do during Bike Week. Rick Meehan and the entire Ocean City Town Council FAILED the residents, visitors and police officers by not making sure everyone was safe from this thousands of rowdy punks. They all need to resign, especially the police chief and the Sheriff.

    1. A lot of people on here have made valid points and educated comments based on what happened this weekend. A few of you have not. One of you admitted you worked for the sheriffs department and trashed law enforcement. The other 2 or 3 bashed the mayor, ocpd, etc.....well, if you don't think the kids that came down here this weekend don't read this...you're wrong! That's just what the bad ones want to see....people not supporting the community and police...you are just fueling them to be worse. If you don't like it here then move. No one agrees with everyone, but the only way to go about this is with a united front. So, keep up the negative comments....and for those of you that say they failed and did a horrible job and that they should all be fired, etc....did anyone die? Did your house get burned down? Did you get shot? Yes...bad things happened, but given the scope and magnitude of the event everyone of you ungrateful bastards should be ashamed of yourselves. They did what they could and we should all be thanking them for putting their lives on the line to protect ours!!!

  79. I spend my hard-earned money in OC's restaurants, hotels, arcades, jewelry stores & gas stations every year during H20i. I love the cars. Don't care for the amplified exhaust systems, but, since that is a universal problem, I anticipate that states will outlaw those.

I drive 4+ hours for this treat! What a spot you are in! Dudes! You are ON THE MAP! Other places would PAY for that opportunity! Atlantic City is a fart in a hurricane. Ocean City had a HUGE VOLUME of visitors!!! Okay...they were unruly. You upped the 5-0 presence, protected the citizens and fined the scofflaws. YOUR MUNICIPAL WHINING IS PATHETIC.

During the daylight hours I was on the beach enjoying the sounds of the surf...UNTIL YOUR IDIOTIC SPEEDBOATS BEGAN TO ROAR UP & DOWN THE SHORE!! No one accosted them!!

Three days of carefull management got ya through. Good work. It's time to welcome this crowd with open arms! Respect their desire to come to your town. Organize a parade for them to ride in. They can't speed in a parade. More tourists like me will be attracted. Award an array of prizes for an array of categories. Scofflaws get DQ'd. Invest in a competition venue. Formalize and monetize this GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY!! Ocean City is a vacation destination and an exciting resort town...it's not some sleepy little virgin village that some of you morons are casting as a victim!! Make hay while the sun shines. Indianapolis has the Indy 500 ONCE a freakin year...OC needs to manage this opportunity before it fades away!!

The rest of you "citizens": 95% of you are not native to OC, but you're the one's whining the loudest. Move to Rehoboth, move to Naples. Ocean City will NEVER be/has NEVER BEEN a cradle of tranquility. You who fantasize OC to be a sleepy retirement village are wishfully hoping for this zebra to lose its beautiful stripes.
