ANNAPOLIS, Md. —For the eighth year in row, fewer students are enrolling in the nation's colleges and universities.
A report adds Maryland to that list. No one is surprised by the slight decrease taking place among the state's dozen or so colleges and universities. The state said it knows why the numbers are dropping and has a plan to deal with it.
The new figures come about three months into a new school year for Maryland colleges and universities. The numbers show 170,000 students are now receiving a higher education, which is 4,000 fewer than the same time a year ago.
Bob Caret, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, said the decrease was expected.
"The community colleges are significantly down because of the economy jobs are out there, unemployment is at a low and it just sort of fits together," Caret said.

More importantly - not everyone should go to college! Some really belong in trade schools...welding, auto mechanics, plumbers, electricians, and home construction are all trades that are fading because of the perceived college requirement.!
ReplyDeleteTypical Democrat answer - blame it on the economy now Cripe, do they ever give up. Students are going to out-of-state colleges they admit, but state it is not a cost issue. Denial again. I think students are seeing the light, at least I hope so. U of MD is headed by a bunch of numb skulls including their Board of Regents if they truly believe tuition costs are NOT a factor in attendance. Over-priced tuition based on and highly overpaid administration. If it were a business it would be bankrupt. But no, taxpayers have to support these failures, They should be held accountable!
ReplyDeleteOn line universities provide the coveted sheepskin without the commute, residency fees, and other overwhelming and budensome debt. No brainer.
ReplyDeleteNo mention of the mind numbing liberal indoctrination present throughout the system.
ReplyDeleteAt least 30% of students enrolled in colleges today have no business being there.
ReplyDeleteAbout a third never finish.

ReplyDeletePeople are finally beginning to wise up to the scam. Many of the universities (including those in the People's Republic of Maryland, of course) are nothing more than indoctrination centers. People pay huge sums of (mostly borrowed) money and leave with a theoretical framework of ideas for a system that has never worked anywhere it was tried.
Our son went to work for a manufacturing company as an entry-level employee and is now doing very well after only a few years. He has lots of money saved up, no debt; he's making a very good wage with very good benefits, and has a pretty good life at 22.
You people are willing to cram whatever phenomena you see into your preconceived trash ideologies, regardless of facts. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteCompanies are hiring technicians and providing on the job training in this tight jobs market including plumbing, HVAC, and other key tech areas. Low wage worker wages are up. There are tons of economic drivers that clearly explain the phenomenon, yet you clowns think people are going out of state because somehow suddenly out of state tuition rates are less than in state.
Shows you have no clue about what you are talking about. It would take you all of 30 seconds of research, less time than it took to write the false statement, to find that claim is not true.
Its not that you folks are dumb; its that you are too lazy and too full of yourselves to actually gather facts before forming an opinion.
Thank you 9:40! My 21 year old son is also doing the manufacturing thing, he is making good money and loves learning a trade! I took the college route and I am still paying student loans. I am glad he learned from my mistake. I hope the truth about the scam is getting out.
ReplyDeleteManufacturing is not a trade, it's an occupation that does pay living wages in some areas
DeleteNo!! Not a decrease in enrollment. It's a decrease in PAYING ENROLLMENT. You still have the HOOD TO COLLEGE. Why do you think nobody's enrolling?? Besides the word is out. UofM degree is a JOKE.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet, the Universities continue to build, build, build, and spend, spend, spend.
ReplyDeleteWait I am confused, Didn't SU publish that they have had an increase in enrollment and they are projecting even further increases in coming years!
ReplyDeleteI heard how we need more APTS for all the hordes of SU students that were going to be coming.
Even though the numbers only equated to around 200 more students a year over the last decade, we need to build build build more APTS!!
It's for Jake Day getto and gay crowds from Annapolis and Baltimore. FREE, FREE, FREE. At least for them on our dime.
DeleteI look for universities to go the way of the malls. In the early to mid 80s, the mall was the place to be. Then came Amazon, and there went the mall. When the online colleges really take over, I expect that all of the pricey colleges will have to significantly downsize. The only question will be, where are the safe spaces in cyberspace? Hint is this: there are no safe spaces in the real world, and there aren’t any in cyberspace

And what you say is EXACTLY what you are doing. "you folks"! What the hell is that supposed to mean? Like you have any idea who "you folks" are. You paint with a broad brush, and your opinion is not worth squat if you can't identify the problem. Calling unknown people "clowns" and "you people," lazy and full of yourselves makes you a huge bigot, and the one that is most full of himself. Did someone claim you are an adult? You sound very childish with your name-calling comment. Calling people names doesn't make any point, except how little you are able to form an opinion about anything.
