Kirwan Commission Update

Senator Addie Eckardt, District 37
Kirwan Commission Update
November 6, 2019

On October 15th, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Funding Formula Workgroup held their final meeting and voted to fully phase in the recommendations of the Kirwan Commission over the next 10 years, while adjusting for inflation.

According to the Commission, the recommendations from the workgroup are intended to transform the State’s early childhood, primary, and secondary education system into a world-class system. Five main policy areas are addressed through this legislation: early support for young children and families, high-quality and diverse teachers and educators, college and career readiness, additional resources and services for those students who need them, and a strong accountability system to make sure the Blueprint is effectively administered. These recommendations were approved and passed during the 2019 legislative session as a part of SB 1030 – The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.

As an initiative as significant as modernizing our schools, I believe the upmost attention to this process is needed as we proceed. It is imperative to receive input from our local families and counties. This Thursday, November 7th, a community forum will be held at the Dorchester Career & Technology Center at 6:00 pm to hear from experts and stakeholders about the work and recommendation of the Kirwan Commission. Conversations will include the progress that has been made as well as the work that still needs to be done.

The following documents are from the October 15th meeting and after review, I welcome any feedback and look forward to continuing this conversation:

  3. After nearly a year, we still only have goals? What progress is that outside of burning taxpayer funds. I mean, what have you to show for the money and, if nothing, when? Until then, this is simply more feel good bull$hit.

  5. HOGAN needs to reign in his close friend and block this immoral move. BOB CULVER needs to object to this also. There are less expensive ways to improve our educational system. All this does is raise taxes and not improve our educational system, but raise salaries and benefits for the ELITE. Where is the common sense in improving our educational system with the money that is there. The misuse of funds given to the system now is showing no improvement in the knowledge that is not taught. The only improvement in our educational system is more violence and less leadership. That is two things that need to be corrected and then you will see a more educated student graduating. Raising taxes is not the answer.

  6. We need charter schools because to get accountability to the system. Continuing to feed this failing monkey with no accountability ensures our most precious asset - our children - will fail.

  7. Volunteer teaching assistants would be a big help and I bet there are a lot of retired people who would love to help out BUT there would have to be order in the class rooms.
