A not-so happy Halloween for Maryland’s struggling bat population

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — Halloween is known as one of the spookiest times of the year, filled with witches, ghosts, and scattering bats.

But Maryland’s flapping, black creatures may be less prevalent this year, like years in the recent past.

From cold-loving fungus to high-powered wind turbines, Maryland’s bats are getting annihilated.

The decline of the Maryland bat population

Maryland’s bat population has been decimated by white-nose syndrome since its first documentation in Allegany County in 2010.

  1. That's really reaching. A bat can turn in a split second, and uses radar to "see." There's no way a wind turbine can hit them. Still trying to find any reason, true or false, to be against this clean energy source (because some think they're "ugly"). Give it a rest.

  7. 9:51 You are the one who is "reaching." FYI Bats do NOT use "radar to "see"" Bats can see quite well. This is the problem with you people You people into this "clean energy" nonsense have been dumbed down and are quite the ignoramuses. Now whether you like it or not the fact stands these turbines that yes are eye sores are also killing maiming and injuring a ton of wildlife. And no those of us who care about wildlife will NOT EVER give it a rest. Do you understand you heartless POS! And yes POS you are. Anyone who thinks it's okay to harm any animal like this is a POS and whoever raised you is trash
