Gas explosions like this are not really that uncommon. I lived in the D.C area for over 13 years, and the developmemnt in Montgomery county was crazy with lots of town homes heated with natural gas. Same in Howard county as I lived there also. It was just not uncommon for an explosion in a home in a townhouse development. If no one was hurt, it did not get reported. but I saw in person, in developments near me, the results of several gas explosions that never made the news when I lived there in the 80's.
