Awakening: Half of young Americans say college is too expensive and no longer necessary

In the spring of her senior year of high school, Malavika Vivek had four choices: Caltech, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, or solutions architect at software company Avasoft Inc.

She chose Avasoft.

Vivek had been working for the company part-time while at a magnet engineering-focused high school in Edison, N.J. When she was offered a full-time position, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“I definitely thought about going to college because those schools are all really good. But in the end, I knew I would learn more discovering things on my own and working in the real world,” Vivek told MarketWatch.

At 19 years old, Vivek belongs to Generation Z. And while her experience isn’t yet common, Gen Z is becoming more open to doing college differently or not going at all, according to a new study by TD Ameritrade

“Paying for an education in America is ridiculously expensive, and I think that’s a huge reason why a lot of people in our generation are reconsidering if it’s actually worth it,” Vivek said.

  1. We absolutely need more tradesman. We also need big banks to get the hell out of education loans. We need a Sec. of Education that isn't more interested in dollar signs than keeping our country competitive. The enemy of an oppressive government is an informed citizen.

  3. Good. Most colleges are unfixable at this point. What we need to do is totally de-legitimize the "magic piece of paper" diplomas. Start with the IVY schools- start by no longer pretending that going to Yale, Princeton, Penn or Harvard makes you smart. In fact, I'd rather hire a Wor-Wic student than a Harvard student.

Same with Salisbury- there are some good kids as there would be in any place, but most of them can barely read, barely write, barely string together a complete sentence when talking. They were failed by the public school system and failed by the university.

  5. At least public school teachers have a curriculam and certain standards they have to work within. Not perfect for sure. But some of these professors, and asst. professors don't even have to have a teacher certification. Hence all the bullshit courses being offered today. If a college your looking at offers gender studies, and other how to carry a sign, and wear a pussy hat, and demonstrate courses. Save your money. Research the university carefully. It's your money and your childs future at stake. Plus there are alot of self serving, lazy, tenured professors in these universities. Beware!

  8. Tell your sons and daughters this- go learn a trade. Be a plumber, electrician, carpenter- even an IT engineer. If you still want to learn about philosophy or theology or the humanities (which are all both useful and good to learn)- you'll do much better with the Great Courses online than the left wing indoctrination you'll get at university- and you'll get a more solid education to boot.

  11. Listen I am not that old but when * attended public school everything was free - pencils, paper, etc. Music instruments were loaned to you. What happened? Why can't we pay for school supplies today. To many students (illegal immigrants)??
