As Real ID deadline approaches, Maryland delegate demands solutions to protect drivers whose licenses are seized

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A Maryland state delegate is drafting 'emergency legislation' that would protect drivers whose licenses may be confiscated by police during the state's transition to Real ID.

Customers who have been notified must return to the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to prove their age and identity. The MVA will flag licenses of people who have not returned and those drivers will risk having their IDs confiscated by police in a traffic stop.

Maryland state delegate Eric Ebersole is worried that confiscating licenses will create problems because those drivers may continue to drive without possessing a valid driver's licenses, a violation of state law.

He expressed his concern in a letter to the MVA on Thursday.

  2. Well, duh! Do any Maryland legislators actually think beyond the drop dead date on any laws they create? I was a given that there'd be thousands who didn't comply with the new licensing law for one reason or another. What did the politicians think they'd all do, quit driving altogether until they could get a ride from a licensed driver to the DMV?
Chances are they didn't think that far or wide, or did, maybe rubbing their greedy hands over all of the fines, court time and police man hours levied and and created, snatching up those who didn't comply. They're just common people, after all, right?

  3. Why do we need to prove it AGAIN! We had to show a birth certificate when we got our licenses. Now they get your bank info and other documents in a big grab of info for their skynet projects. Call me what you want but it is all for survelliance and to update facial recognition and other tracking software. You are not free and you are being watched.

  9. Contact the GOVERNOR, SENATORS and DELEGATES and complain. If necessary only licenses issued since 9-11 should be required to comply. .

  10. Well, THAT would certainly take away any incentive for anybody to comply with the requirements. What does the MVA Commissioner think about the idea of no penalty for non-compliance?

  11. And just how do illegals get a license when they have NO way to prove who they are? They won't tell us that.
