A Virginia Baptist church has resurrected a more than half-century old conservative turn of phrase amid President Donald Trump's war of words with four progressive women lawmakers, posting a sign this week declaring: "America: Love it or Leave it."
The admonition was placed outside Friendship Baptist Church in Appomattox, Virginia, on their signboard after Trump's attacks on the group of minority congresswomen — and remarks the so-called "squad" is "free to leave" if they want to.
"I thought I was going to make some remarks regarding the situation in Washington," Pastor E.W. Lucas told the local ABC affiliate. "It just came to me . . . America, I love it. If you don't love it, leave it."
The pastor was not the first to think it up...
Those of us that were young adults in the sixties, remember that taunt being thrown at all the Vietnam protesters. That same "conservative" administration back then murdered four unarmed protesters at Kent State University, using our own National Guard troops to stifle protest of our governments actions. "Love it or leave" it has some very negative connotations to it. The is a country that highly values our constitutional right to protest and criticize our government. I seriously hope it doesn't become the battle cry of the right again. There is no requirement to love our country in order to be a citizen. Being a citizen gives us the right to protest and raise our voices against the government, whenever we feel the government is doing the citizens wrong. Trump and I diverge on his view that any American has to love America or leave it. Trump better step away from that one. He'll lose a lot of his base if he stays on that track.
ReplyDeleteLove it
ReplyDeleteGet it right President Trump did not say Love it or leave it. He said they were free to leave if they do not like living in America/ since their comments were this is not a great place to live.
