Where drivers are most likely to get a speed camera ticket in Md.

Speed cameras serve a safety purpose. They also bring in money — a lot of it.

And in Maryland, the most money comes to Montgomery County.

Maryland’s largest county had the state’s most lucrative speed camera system last year, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic, citing government data — $15,954,868 in speed camera revenue.

Montgomery County’s total amounts to almost one-quarter of the state’s $64 million in automated traffic enforcement fine data during Fiscal Year 2018.

Speed violators pay a $40 fine for each infraction caught on a Maryland speed camera — Montgomery County’s sum equates to 398,871 paid speed camera citations.

  2. Can we possibly come up with a less efficient method of collecting revenue?

  3. There is a legal defense (in Maryland) for them. It involves a GPS navigational unit and a subscription to a speed camera locator. You will be warned when approaching a known speed camera location. Portable speed cameras are a bit more problematic, but most speed cameras are in fixed locations. If you live, or drive on the other side of the bay on a regular basis, it would pay to have one. The only good thing is that Maryland has a law that prohibits insurance companies from using speed camera violations for insurance rating and rates.

  4. On a positive note, once a driver gets ticketed going above the 12mph over stated speed limit they usually won't do it again at that location.

  5. Soon everyone will be required and EZ pass and these cameras will clock and collect instantly as well as time you between tolls and fine you. It's too costly to have police on the road just for speeding violations.

  7. So let me get this right o.k. to speed but not o.k. to steal change out of a vehicle you want prosecution on that LAW. Speeding causes accidents people. Do not speed and it is not an issue. Wonder if Jake Day will implement those funds to emergency services. I have often wondered why Wicomico County does not use them. The Sheriff is a former Trooper I would think he would support these tools to reduce speed. I can tell you they work I slow down when I approach Wicomico Middle school or Parkside and Bennett. Those idiots that speed through our county to get to Ocean City a few minutes faster cause tons of accidents. I think one in Pittsville would reduce accidents. The new light is not effective.

  12. Heck, my son was charged $100 for going over the speed limit by the minimum amount in Montgomery county. The notice said he had a 5 second notice before slowing down. Government thievery !

  13. For all you "holier than thou" commenters, you speed too. Everyone does, at some time or the other, or all the time. So get off your attitude. Like the epitaph at the local graveyard, "your times a'coming." Nobody believes anybody that says they never speed.

  14. Many speed cameras in Salisbury are gone. Some signs remain, but no cameras. Like Main St. headed west in front of the polar bar.. No camera although signs warn of one. Camera only works for east bound traffic Same in front of Parkside headed west, camera only works for east bound traffic.. No camera headed west. They finally took the signs down in front of Glen Ave. where there hasn't been a camera in years.
There os a list online of active cameras.

  15. You used to be afforded the right to cross examine all witnesses against you! Like everything else that's been trampled for the sake of the mighty $1.3 million SBY made on the cameras in 2018!

The ticket goes to the car, and the car's owner, not the driver. The car can't confront anybody. There are no points to the driver of the car. It is not a personal fine or accusation against a driver, like a traffic stop. It's one against the speeding car and the owner. If the owner of the car that does the speeding through the camera wants to keep it registered, the owner pays the car's fine. Or, don't pay it. The owner won't go to jail or have their license suspended, and no bench warrants will be issued, but the registration will not be renewed, and the car will be worthless if it can't be driven legally. "Due Process" for a car! Really?

  21. WBOC had a comment from the City saying it costs them more money to operate the cameras than they bring in. More lies from the liberal media. The City does not operate them. You can't even walk in and pay the ticket. How is that even legal?

  22. Eastern Shore drive camera only works headed north. There is no camera going south. And yes College ave. does have them. It's all on the website. Where and in what directions. I'd suggest you read it.

The driver isn't accused of anything. It's the car that was speeding. And that's how they get away with it. If it was unconstitutional, it wouldn't be done. Courts say whether a law is unconstitutional, not people that have no idea what the constitution allows, and doesn't allow. This has already been tested in the courts, and is not "unconstitutional." The driver isn't penalized for anything. It's the owner that has to pay a fine to keep his registration valid. Many of you just don't get it.

  25. I thought they had to put up signs before they installed a speed camera and keep them up. There are no signs on Eastern Shore Drive.

You don't have to be the driver for that to happen! See the difference?
