FREDERICK, Md. — There is a miniature invasion taking place in Frederick this weekend to commemorate one of the most infamous battles of World War II.
Eric Zipkin of New York owns one of the 800 airplanes that took part in D-Day, June 6, 1944. On Friday, he’ll lead a formation six C-47 transport planes. They’ll leave Frederick then wing down the Potomac River and over Arlington National Cemetery.
“It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck,” said Zipkin. “It’s extremely moving.”
The tribute is practice for an even larger mission. Zipkin will fly his “Placid Lassie” over the North Atlantic to France, flying over memorials and cemeteries on the 75th anniversary of the invasion. In a single day of fighting, more than 2,800 American soldiers were killed—many dropped by parachute and glider from C-47s.
“It is very hard,” said Zipkin. “There’s a period of time when the gravity of what you’re doing sinks in.”
