7 kids left in hot car in Maryland mall parking lot, 4-year-old used cell phone to call 911

WASHINGTON -- A 4-year-old used a cell phone to call 911 after they and six other kids were left inside a hot car while the woman watching them went into a mall.

It happened Friday afternoon at the St. Charles Mall in Maryland.

Emergency responders were able to track the location of the cell phone and found the kids in the car after asking them what color and make it was.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the 37-year-old woman who owned the car came out after about 10 minutes and found the fire department with the kids. She told them she had only run inside to use the bathroom.

She also said only two of the kids in the car were hers, and she was babysitting the others.

  1. It was 75 out. Open a window. Kids today are wimps.

  2. If she took the keys with her and the windows were up they could not get out or automatically roll the windows down. You are the WIMP 12;47 for not putting concern for the children first, you are as bad as she is-- I pray you have no children. She should have felony charges and I pray the other parents take her to court. I am sure there are cameras in the Mall that can show times of just how long she was there and probably other stores she was in.

  3. When I was less than 6 years old, I was constantly left in the car, mostly by my own preference, while my parent went to the grocery store or any other local business. Back then, you could roll the windows down without the key, but that doesn't make a difference if the parent would roll them down to begin with. No one batted an eye!

Leave it to the 50 idiots who left their babies to die in car seats, and going to work and eight hour day to ruin it for every one else!

In this case, if a four year old calls the cops, it likely was a dangerous situation.

  4. No child should be left alone period. Whether in a car or a home. Shame on you 12:47

  5. 12:47 Majority of cars today have power windows. No key = no power windows. Doors may or may not have been locked. Kidproof back locks would have frustrated any adult also. The 4 year old sounds like the most responsible person in the car. According to article rescuers had been on scene about 10 minutes before she showed up; factor in their response time and however long the kid waited before calling. Sheds a different light.

Not the point. Think about it 4 kids left unattended in a mall parking lot. The 4 year old called 911. This situation is easy prey for child predators, not to mention if something happened to the woman while in the mall. I guess you are the kind that is ok to leave a dog in a car unattended also?

  8. 1247 is right. Open a door a crack. If my kid called the cops he would be on yard duty for a long time.
