Inexplicably, the Senate just voted against the will of the overwhelming majority of Marylanders - they have overturned my veto of legislation that reverses our common sense initiative for a post-Labor Day school start.
In 2016, after years of public outcry, I took action to return to the tradition of starting school after Labor Day. These partisan legislators are now turning back the clock on years of bipartisan recommendations, including a 12-3 vote by an expert task force created by the legislature and the previous governor. What is even worse: beyond this reversal by the legislature are heavy-handed tactics to unfairly influence the ballot process and any petition to bring this issue directly to you, the Maryland voters.
Legislators in the Maryland House of Delegates should heed the calls of the overwhelming majority of Marylanders and uphold my veto.
Gov. Hogan,
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect for a fabulous Governor . . .
You have your dog in the wrong fight. I agree that starting school after Labor Day makes sense. The process you used to make the decision was non-partisan and thorough. You had a majority of Marylanders behind you. The legislature should not have overturned this.
However, look at the "Middle School fight" on Joe's SBYNEWS.COM blog today. THIS, Governor, is where your focus needs to shift dramatically! Maryland cannot allow the FEDS and Betsy DeVos to dictate to our State, county governments and school boards what will be tolerated in our schools.
The violence in our schools on the Eastern Shore continues to escalate and affects every fiber of our well-being and future.
Take the lead, Governor. Let the starting school date be, and Move On. August or Sept start date doesn't matter if families are afraid to send their kids to school.
This could be your signature platform that will spiral you into the stratosphere as you deserve. Please, Governor Hogan, start now!
They are still supporting the OBAMA old rules on NOT punishing bullies devouse cancelled the OBAMA REGULATIONS but the lib scum BOE are still adhering to it hence the out of control schools.
DeleteSTFU Hogan, the american people want this, becasue if they didn't they would do something about it and since they don't and won't, this is what they want... And now they got it, so lets wait for them to now start complaining as per usual...
