Chef Andrés Expanding Free Meals for Federal Workers Nationwide

The renowned chef whose kitchens whipped up more than 100,000 meals per day to feed hungry Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria is now heating the stove to feed federal workers nationwide who have gone without pay during the month-long government shutdown.

José Andrés started his World Central Kitchen after the 2010 Haiti earthquake to help feed families struggling after the disaster.

A week ago, World Central Kitchen set up shop at 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington, near the Navy Memorial. The #ChefsForFeds location has been serving up free hot meals and packaged to-go items for federal employees and their families.

Monday's menu was a sweet chili chicken sandwich with fresh avocado, bacon and ginger aioli, with a vegan option of a Thai bowl with farro, quinoa, veggies and peanut sauce. The soup was an Asian curry vegetable stew.

The kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and federal employee ID is required.

  2. Why does everyone care so much about govt workers . When people in the private sector get laid off no one cares. They don't get back pay, very little media coverage, free meals or go fund me campaigns. This is all a product of the left because government is their God. Maybe their afraid that over time people will realize most of these non -essential workers are just that. They make double the private sector with free health care and tons of paid vacation time while the rest of us bust our asses ever day to run businesses and try and make a living.

    1. They may earn more money but their health Care is not free. I do agree that they don't need free meals or fundme. Yes alot are definitely not needed. Obama put too many people in the Federal Government.

  3. After is all said and done, are they going to start feeding the homeless, the underprivileged, the homeless VETS and others ?
There are many people that go without food every single day and these people don't get help. The FED workers will be getting ALL their back pay as soon as the government reopens their departments.
At this point, I will blame all sides
But the worse is still Polosi and Schumer. One can't poop without the other there to wipe....

    1. Maybe private industry doesn't pay as well - I don't know but my observation in Salisbury is that those who own their own business have 1/2 plus million dollar homes. A boat - two very expensive cars and a RV that cost over 100,000 dollars all which are a write off on their taxes not to mention entertainment. Let's not forget the private Catholic schools. Seems to me private industry pays well.

  5. I have know many hard working people, veterans and elderly people and in hard times no bank would help them but for the government workers they advertise helping them all over I guess there's help for some but not all.

  6. The gov't salaries range between about $30,000 to just over $100,000 per year. Half make over $80,000. Of the remaining half, half of those make over $50,000.
