Philip Alston, the United Nations’ special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, recently reported that in the United States, “[a]bout 40 million live in poverty, 18.5 million in extreme poverty, and 5.3 million live in third-world conditions of absolute poverty.”
He further argued before the U.N. Human Rights Commission that “one of the world’s wealthiest countries does very little about the fact that 40 million of its citizens live in poverty.”
He is wrong on all counts.
Such claims do have a veneer of legitimacy, however, because when compiling the U.S. government’s official poverty statistics, the Census Bureau considers only the cash income each family reports in an annual survey.
These “official” income figures exclude substantial off-the-books earnings among low-income households and omit roughly 95 percent of the $1.1 trillion U.S. taxpayers provide in means-tested cash, food, housing, and medical benefits for low-income persons each year.

there`s no come back to that except to say that all americans living in poverty have free cell phones, free food, free housing and free medical care. how many people in your country have free cell phones??if amrica was so bad then why is every hispanic in south america trying to illegally enter the country??
ReplyDeleteBecause most of the free items goes to all of the illegals who come to this country. Americans have to still work minimum hours at the lowest and low wages to receive help from the government. You folks with your american born child don't.
DeleteI have been to Ethiopia and Uganda on missions trips. I have also extensively traveled the USA. Most third world country and developing country residents would give up body limbs to live in " extreme" poverty in the USA.
ReplyDeleteNow, this person understands and admitted to our "extreme" poverty in this country.
DeleteAmericans living in poverty are mostly hoes who know how to make them babies illegitimately with every thug criminal. That's a fact. The Number 1 cause of poverty is that. Stupid worthless hoes who know how to spread their legs because they are hoes who have sunk so low and are so disgusting and gross. Then they are fed the BS that it takes a village. Yeah it only takes a village when you are a worthless POS.
ReplyDeleteMaybe true. Our government created this problem with drugs, gun, hate, and disenfranchisement amongst the people since Reagan's era. That era and since then destroyed the villages. Now everyone is out gor themselves.
DeleteIf they are living in poverty it is because they want to. Welfare overload has created a lazy society with few who want to work hard for gain. Thanks to the liberals.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't a liberal issue. It's a political period issue.
DeleteOh! Nigerians and others outside the country nationalist speaks. You come here because you do not know, have lived or experience the failed promises, possibilities and maybes of the "American Dreams". If one manage to get to the top of the mountain, either our political leaders in this country, a basket full of crabs or slave wage worker just pull us back down off that mountain. Many of us have worked hard all of our lives, honorably, productively and ended up with nothing because we have reach old age, we trusted our leaders or didn't make it to the one percenter status. And, if we are still working, our federal tax system broke the ice for us a long time ago. Blacks and poor whites have experience this for centuries. One has to lie, steal, kill and cheat to become rich and powerful. I just want a quiet and comfortable life style. But, our government don't even want us to have that. They just want us to work hard for them, pay taxes and die. For the folks coming into this country and for your information, the system created these hoes you speak of. The system brought the drugs and guns into our lives. The system created the hate and discontent amongst the people in this country. The system created all kinds of disenfranchisement amongst the people and etc, etc. Now, it is time for you all to stay here long enough to see and seek the truth, understand our struggle we experience in the only place we call home and and experience the biggest lie ever told anout this country and that's the "American Dream". I guarantee, once you a have experience the "American Dream", you will flee this country and most Americans will love to see you leave. No disrespect. The American Dream is about working your butt off to the bones, pay ridiculous taxes and then you die. You can't give time for your childrens, family, friends, faith, vacation or etc. because you or either paying bills, too tired, too sick or trying to make up for everything you accomplished that you had missed when you were younger now that you are old with one foot in the grave. That's the "American Dream". It's all about the haves and have nots. The good ole boys and stepford wives club at its best. Just make one mistake and see how deep you fall and how far you have to climb to pick yourself back up. No drugs, alcohol or breaking the law have to be the catalysts.
