What's Up With College Dropouts?

It’s that time of year again, when college graduates head out into the world to begin new careers, and high-school graduates prepare for college and all the exciting opportunities it will open up for them.

Or so the brochures will tell you.

The fact is, college is becoming a riskier proposition for students and their families with each passing year. The job market for college graduates is extremely competitive, and many young people find themselves settling for jobs outside their field of study. Sometimes, they find themselves taking jobs that they didn’t even need a degree for in the first place just so they can start chipping away at the mountain of debt they took on to pay for that degree.

It makes many parents wonder if college is worth it. A growing number of students have determined that it’s not.

College dropout numbers are rising sharply, according to the American Enterprise Institute...

  1. Too many participation-trophy high school "graduates" get to college and are woefully under prepared to do even basic level college work.

  2. I would like to see the statistics of who drops out of college and who was paying for it. Are these students that were paying their own way and couldn't afford it or are these students that were getting a free ride and couldn't handle the work load in college.

  3. Joe has had articles on this topic before and has said technical jobs are going to be very very important in this countries' future. The need for HVAC, plumbing expertise (and not the bend you over types) keeps growing and those jobs do NOT require a $100,000 debt/college degree. Apprentices, vocational, tech certifications is what you need. Not the requirement for Stats class if getting a Business Mgmt degree. Woodworking jobs are still needed, mechanics, trucking, etc. Still need good folks for these jobs since those in these jobs are retiring left/right.

Some of our snowflakes need to grow up and quick!

  4. I know someone who got a BS in communications last year and is now working at Walmart. All those years and all that money for nothing!

  5. It is not worth it but it has taken almost a full generation of students with massive debts to realize it. The education industry has profited immensely from the rise in tuition costs and the professors have benefitted as well. The American Peopke were taken to the cleaners on this one.

It will be very difficult to convince future generations to make this same mistake.

  6. In without a clue, out without a job and a backup plan, still missing the clue.

Actually the person with a BS in Communications will eventually make a good Store Manager at Walmart and earn over $100K.
Many companies are promoting people with Communications Majors into management positions.
The modern curriculum includes a lot of HR training, computer training, and personal relationship skills.

  9. Stop whining?

How long has it been since you interviewed for a job?
Are you aware of the desperate situation in the job market?
All of the jobs are low paying and service industry jobs

  10. Sharp HS students who exerted effort and have given thought to future plans still have reasonable prospects via college and grad school.

Much less certain for those with little effort and planning in HS. They'll still be responsible for their loans if they drop out.

Those who took tech courses will be earning a living, and eventually starting businesses which can employ some of those who were slower to catch on.

Many college majors, especially those recent offerings with 'Studies' as part of the title are a waste of time and money.

  11. Well, if someone else pays for your college, it doesn't mean that much to you. You lose nothing if you just pack up and leave. A lot of them are there just for the parties anyway. Or just something to do with their time. They have no intention of graduating. Some stay for the Affirmative Action complimentary diploma then go home and sign up for welfare. Let's see a study on that.
