Democrat Congressman Wants 'Taxpayer-Funded Dorms'

Legislation would subsidize living expenses for House members

Democratic members of Congress want taxpayers to subsidize their housing, signing onto legislation that would allow them to deduct living expenses for members of the House of Representatives.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D., Miss.) introduced a bill that would ban members of Congress from sleeping in their offices and would change the tax code to allow House members to deduct their spending on housing in D.C. up to $3,000. The deduction would not apply to senators.

Thompson has also proposed turning a vacant building near Capitol Hill into apartments for House members at the expensive of taxpayers, which critics have dubbed a "Congressional Animal House."

The taxpayer-watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste criticized Thompson's legislation and his proposed "taxpayer-funded dorms."

  4. When I got out of school (mid sixties)and left home I was taking making 50 bucks a week for 60 hours of work plus worked many more hours without any extra pay. This was expected of me by the employer. I had all the living expenses to go along with it, along with a wife. I didn't even know it was rough, but everything has turned out fine. How come everything is expected to be free today when there is more money available?

  5. No way they need another unneeded benefit that would save them money. If they want to turn it into a dormitory, then house the homeless Veterans and the homeless, even the illegals they want to enter the US. That way the illegals / MS13 and the other criminals would be in their neighborhood and not mine.

  6. Being a member of Congress was never intended to be someone's career. They are supposed to work for the people for a short period of time once a year and then return to their home state to live and work among the people they represent so as to have a feel for the people's concerns.
I believe that it is TX Statehouse that meets for like a week every 2 yrs. This is the way it should be. MD on the other hand because it's run by democrats now meets twice a year. They still accomplish nothing of any substance or rare anyway. Example this idiotic bill passed in the senate recently that will not allow anyone who doesn't make tax returns public on presidential ballot in MD. This is the kind of childish nonsense the democrats waste time on.
