Virginia police issue $100 ticket to driver smoking with child in car: 'We are watching'

A police officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department recently issued a $100 ticket to a driver who was smoking a cigarette with a child in the car.

The police department posted a photo of the ticket on Twitter, writing: “Protect your children and keep $100 in your pocket! #NoSmoking #WeAreWatching.”

Virginia police can issue the $100 fine to anyone smoking in a car with a child under 8 years of age, according to WAVY-TV. However, it constitutes as a secondary offense, meaning the driver has to be pulled over for a separate traffic violation first.

The law went into effect in July of 2016. Since then, the Virginia Beach Police Department has issued roughly 23 tickets of this kind, WAVY-TV reported.

  2. I grew up around adults smoking. I am a perfectly healthy adult. Just another excuse to charge $100 because no one will defend the parent smoking with their kid.

  4. Smokers are entitled people. They want to spew their filth into the air, throw their butts onto the road ways, rivers , ponds , oceans pollute their own lungs and everyone else. $100 fine is not nearly enough when you have a child in a car that has no choice in the situation.
    Yes ...another entitlement...smokers .

  9. I am 78 YOA and was raised in a cloud of smoke from my fathers Camel's, along with smoke from our friends. A lot of people smoked at that time. Dad lived a productive life until age 96 when he passed. I am not glorifying it, I stopped twenty years ago.
Sometimes you have people die young that never has a smoke.
The government's job is to protect us from enemies, not our own harm. That would be our choice, good or bad.

You people need to pay strict attention on were this Country is head especially with a Dictator at the head of this Country. Stick around and you are going to see some things. He doesn't love Putin for no reason He likes him because of his thinking and control tactics.

  12. I grew up around a father who smoked Camel shorts like a chimney, in the house, in the car, it didn't matter. Grandma used to shake her head when we kids got to her house smelling like ashtrays. Two of the three of us had childhood asthma that caused permanent lung capacity damage.
Protect children for parents who can't or won't.

  13. If you don't want people to smoke, stop producing them. If you don't want butts on the ground, stop putting them on cigs. If you don't like people enjoying themselves and their rights, move to a country that doesn't have any.

Stop demonizing people for doing things you don't agree with. I know that will give you fewer things to complain about but you can find another hobby.

Maybe changing some of this rainwater to wine?
