OCEAN CITY — With an eye on tapping potential unrealized revenue, Ocean City officials this week voted to form a task force to begin exploring an expansion of paid parking in certain areas around the resort.
During budget deliberations, the Mayor and Council directed staff to do an analysis of expanding metered parking on the public streets in the ocean block from 11th to 33rd streets. City Engineer and resident parking guru Terry McGean then analyzed the potential revenue and the estimated cost of expanding metered parking in that 22-block section of essentially upper downtown.
McGean estimated there were 444 potential metered spaces in the section of ocean block from 11th Street to 33rd Street. The estimated annual revenue from each of those spaces ranged from $2,500 on the high side to around $1,250 on the low side. Similarly, the percentage of residential parking spaces in that 22-block section ranged from a high of 75 percent to zero percent in some cases.

ocean city parking is out of control - I live in Ocean Pines and have gone to the Boardwalk twice this year when the new parking regulations were in effect - what a nightmare - if I can offer one suggestion - take a picture of your license number on your phone this way you have it with you at all time - you first must find a parking space, then find the nearest meter and enter a ton of information - the two times I used it there was a line so half my group is ready to go and I had to spend 15 minutes waiting in line and trying to input my information and before anyone starts to attack me - I'm not an idiot pretty sure I can figure out electronics! This was one of the hardest things I have ever done -from now on parking in the municipal lot in West Ocean City for Free and walking in or done with the Boardwalk until the fall.
ReplyDeleteI vacation down south because of this reason. The Other Banks, Myrtle Beach, St Simons Island, and Destin Florida have no charge for parking and few toll roads. To hell with Maryland and their continuous taxes and fees for just about everything. Goes for Delaware and New Jersey as well for their parking fees!
ReplyDelete11:07 AM I understand your frustration but I have also used the new system and did not seem to have that many issues.
ReplyDeleteThe only information it asks for is your plate number and how much time you want.
I agree that it is cumbersome at first and it is going to be a problem with people that are confused by it or who have never had to deal with it before.
I can only say SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS because once they start sending out bogus tickets that is your only proof you paid.
Use the app
DeleteJust pave the beach and put up meters.
ReplyDeleteRead the article, idiot mayor swore two years ago this wouldn't happen, now form a task force (that he appoints) tell them how to vote, and then blame them. Poor, poor excuse for a leader.
ReplyDeletethey will cry when they drive the folks away.
ReplyDeleteGreed is a strange thing isn't it?
I hope that town squeezes every last nickel, dime, or quarter that they can out of vacationers & locals alike. There’s a problem when it’s cheaper to get on a jet & fly to west coast for a week than it is to vacation in OC. There’s no comparison.
ReplyDelete"City Engineer and resident parking guru Terry McGean"
ReplyDeleteGuru? Really? City Engineer, previous City manager, mayors council member for years now are guru's of nothing. Backwards people who haven't an ounce of class or sophistication who have ruined what was once a gem. Ocean City is now a cement city with no charm or class. It attracts the lowest forms of life.
Good job anonymous. . You forget that those who work for the city work for the council don't hold the employees responsible..
DeleteOcean City needs to put up toll booths at Rt 90 and 50 and charge each car $10000 each and then the city should be happy, after all, it is a FAMILY TOWN. Next year, they can add a surcharge for each person in the car. The following year they could add a charge if the sun is shining. Man what a great place to get raped - I mean visit.
ReplyDeleteTheir mission: Convince more people to stay away from OC
ReplyDeleteRight?
Dis-incentivize the public from coming here.
12:41 "the only information it asked for is your license plate number and you time" another violation of our privacy!!! I agree with a lot of comments on here - Ocean City is becoming Greed City and I am staying away!
ReplyDelete1241 that's part of the problem. Anything complicated (license plate info) to a VACATIONER....the most important part of the Ocean City equation of MAKING MONEY...will make that VACATIONER remember why not to return.
ReplyDeleteCity FAIL - keep making the experience more and more cumbersome AND expensive at the same time. "Buy" the way, why is restaurant week never EVER during the high season? Only thing ever saved is some $5 buck ice cream cake dessert which is from USA Foods or Sysco anyway.
Want to know a real waste of resources - your $3M WALL!!!!!!!!!!!
Most of the vacationers come from areas that already use this system. It's been around for years. Why are you bornheres against anything new? You can pay for parking using your phone and never wait at the machine and you can add time while on the beach or at a restaurant without going to the kiosk too.
ReplyDeleteBoy, they have found a cash cow that they want to milk to death!
