Philadelphia Starbucks manager claims loitering was ongoing problem

The Starbucks manager who called the police on two black customers for trespassing has spoken out, claiming that loitering has been an ongoing issue in the store.

The employee, named only as Holly, has since 'mutually parted ways' with the Philadelphia store after video went viral of the two men being arrested as they waited for their friend to arrive at the coffee shop.

The incident has sparked sit-ins and protests at the store as many claim the black men were racially profiled by the manager. On Monday, interfaith clergy leaders staged a sit-in at the Center City Starbucks to demand action.

Holly, who managed the 18th and Spruce Street location for a year before leaving the company, told AppleNews.com on Saturday that she'd had problems with loiterers and one had even chased her round the shop after she asked them to leave.

  3. If it was really loitering - then why the shutdown for sensitivity training? Are you really teaching your employees how to not get caught next time?! Or just appeasing the true racists with your million dollar losses so you can say you've done something!

  4. I'm white. I've used Starbucks as a meeting point 100's of times over the years especially if I or the other person(s) are not from or familiar with the area. I drink coffee in the mornings and rarely if ever after 10-11 am. I've never been questioned or asked to leave for not buying coffee when I am not in the mood for coffee. I use the wifi and don't draw attention to myself. It is only urban stores that keep restrooms locked due to homeless people and junkies. I've never been refused access to a restroom either. Not a fan of BLM, but this situation has me leaning toward a racist manager or PMS.

  5. I often wondered how the Pemberton Coffee house stayed open as long as it did because there were always people with computers hogging tables and group meetings with a cup of coffee instead of lunch. I saw that one coming....sad...I saw it coming. I have not been back since they have opened under new management but I hope they don't get caught in the same loop. This had nothing to do with race either.

  6. I am sure they were loitering and started trouble when asked to leave. Buy something or go hang out at the library. Maybe if they had jobs, they wouldn't have time to get arrested and trespassed. "We here and we focused." Stop using fancy words out of context and that you don't understand, get a job and get over "being black." If you want to be treated with equality, stop demanding differently because of the different colors of your skin. As for that liberal bastion, Starbucks, , you reap what you sow. That is all.

  8. 7:16 How do you know whether they have jobs or not? College educated with a degree and meeting a white man that showed up as they were being arrested. Maybe it was an interview for a job or maybe they were interviewing him. Not all back people are on welfare and drugs. There are black doctors, lawyers, dentists, accountants, veterinarians, and even judges today in case you have not noticed.

  9. I'm not a fan of Starbucks, but if any of you have ever been in a big city, you know that none of the fast food places want you to hang out, use the bathroom, etc. unless you make a purchase.
