Hey Teachers, I Really Want To Know...

While Wicomico County Teachers continue to point fingers at County Executive Culver over pay raises HE HAS NO SAY ON and they continue to be critical because they're not smart enough to know it's the BOE who manages ALL of the funds given by County Taxpayers, I truly need to ask the following question...

What would you rather have:

1. More money for Pre K
2. Teachers' Salaries
3. School/Student Safety
4. School Construction

It's time to put it back on the Teachers and the BOE to put this to rest. If you want the Executive to exceed Maintenance of Effort, answer the damn question and the School you represent, since so many are so afraid to use their name, (not that I blame them).

I'll remind these Teachers, Culver, (in his last budget) did give enough funds to give Teachers a 2% raise. It was Fredericksen who not only took the 2% raise and dropped it down to 1%, NOT the County Executive. Even worse, by the time Fredericksen actually gave the Teachers that 1% raise it reduced it down to .5%. Do NOT let the BOE continue fooling you by pointing fingers at the Executive. They're thieves and they're stealing from YOU.

School safety. We (most of us) have been telling them we would rather have no pay increase but get the behavior under control. This has been said for years. The WCEA wants more money for more dues so they can enrich themselves. I left the left-wing propaganda machine years ago when I saw it for racket it is and I am certainly not the only one. Most of us aren't raging liberals but centrist-right politically. Your readers wish to believe otherwise, but we are more frustrated by MSDE and the Obama "Dear Colleague" coercive tactics than you will ever know.

Joe, I sense the hostility. But let's be real, the driver behind this is the NEA/MSEA/WCEA, not us! And as I posted previously, many of us left that corrupt cohort long ago

  3. If they don't like the pay they are getting for nine months work, paid pension and family healthcare, let them join the real working world. Quit and get a job in the private section.

    2. 710, your assertions are so counterproductive, yet sadly expected. Lets say all teachers quit. Great idea. What then?

Also, if it is so glamorous, why is there a massive shortage?

  8. The behavior problem comes from the liberals letting them get away with things for so long. There is no accountability for their actions when they do wrong. Once they hit the real world they think the same thing. Many of the problems are because kids are not told NO. Sorry conservative teachers but the liberals have screwed up the school system and the justice system.

  9. So, where does Culver stand? You write what is budgeted, but does Culver support the teachers or the BOE? I want him as the "County Executive" to speak on the issue.

  14. Please don’t place all teachers in the “union cryers” category. There are many many teachers that want nothing to do with the lame union that cries every year about salary.
I am a teacher and I can tell you that most of us feel we are paid fairly. Most teachers would not place salary as the #1 issue in their profession. Teachers want school safety as a priority, and more specifically the ability to discipline students again. Teachers have no control or power over consequences students receive, if any, for poor behavior.
Unfortunately there is a misperception from the community that teachers are greedy and all they want is more money. This is very far from true. Most teachers want students who act like asses and disrupt the school environment out of their classes and held accountable for their actions. So again, all the cry about salary is coming from the teachers union, who do nothing but make the rest of us look bad.

  15. Once again the liberal union makes us teachers look bad!!!! WCEA/MSEA/NEA needs to go!!! Should have broken away 4 years ago when we had the chance! I didn’t see it then but I see it now!!!!

  17. I'm not a teacher, but it seems to me the Board is failing in community leadership. School safety - The behavior in the classroom and hallways needs to be addressed first. The Board should be leading the way in partnering with Churches and other groups to change the attitudes of a large group of parents who allow their children to run wild. The need a BIG, well-publicized initiative to clean up the bad actors and attitudes.

  18. I truly wish the Co Adm had educated himself, BEFORE SBYNews informed readers how uneducated ALL Wicomico teachers are. It is the Union, not the teachers asking for the raise. The Teachers Union does not speak for the majority of the teachers. Yes, we as non-union teachers, are required to pay a minimum for dues, but we are NOT required to join the Union. The Union reasoning for non-union teachers being forced to pay dues is the Union is working on the behalf of ALL teachers. The truth is not ALL teachers work for the Union.

Lumping ALL teachers in one pot shows Exec Culver is unaware who appeared before him. Believe me when I state, the teachers are aware that you cannot get blood from a turnip. Of course the Union pushes hard for the increase in budget. If it happens the Union can show “what they did for the teachers”. If the school budget is not increased the Union can show “what they tried to do for the teachers”.

IMO Exec. Admin Culver, fighting his battle through SBYNews Blogger, shows no respect and is an injustice to the majority of his Wicomico County teachers. Give the Poll to the Union to “answer the damn question”. We as teachers have enough on “our backs” without misinformation from the County Administrator’s Office being added. Please black eye the Union – not your children’s teachers.

P S No reminder needed on the last pay raise. I and the majority of my colleagues do not feel the "BOE continues fooling us by pointing fingers at the Executive." nor do we think “They're thieves and they're stealing” from us. Mr Culver IMO is wrong in his assumptions and is not helping his cause by suggesting such. Can SBYNews show proof proving the two statement (what I consider to be slander) is true.

  19. Conservative Teacher, are you trying to tell me it's your local media screwing up how locals think? I ask because whenever we see anything to do with teachers on television your local media doesn't mention anything about a UNION, nor do any of us see letters to the editor in the local papers stating it's the UNION and NOT the overall opinion of teachers.

Look, I know I'm ragging on you a little bit but I'm confident you can now see where I'm headed with this.

To the Idiot who is trying to claim that Culver put me up to this post, kiss my you know what. I'm a LOT smarter then some of you think I am, hence my becoming the biggest news source on the entire Shore. I'm the only one man enough to call these people out and get to the root of the TRUTH.

"IT's for the children" my rear end. This post should have 200 to 300 comments on it because it truly hits the hottest topic the United States has seen in decades. If these LIBERALS truly give damn about CHILDREN, of course they'd be all about school safety first. Instead they show up at council meetings demanding more pay and conveniently FORGET they got a pay raise and their leader stole most of it.

So Conservative Teacher, if you mean what you say, start loading up the local media with the TRUTH and IF they refuse to publish or air the truth, come back here and tell me and SBYNews will call them out on their carefully orchestrated scam.

  21. Face the facts! I attended Educational Week and saw first hand, ethnic groups of children, some which could not or would not speak English. Our teachers are being challenged like never before. Many parents have opted to send their kids to private schools. I know I would if affordable. Because of guidelines teachers have little control of their classrooms. It's the worst I have ever seen it.

Schools throughout the country are grappling with teacher shortage, data show

937, That is a headline of the first source I found while searching for "a shortage of teachers". Anyone could do the same, including you, to find out the truth instead of myths and personal feelings. (And it would save you some embarrassment from spouting off things you just don't know) Everyone likes to be correct but some of us actually research the facts to ensure that we are.

  25. Teachers are under a very fragile bubble because economies are not driven by teacher costs/saleries. A job (no mater what it is) pays more in higher cost of living areas to the West. The pay is not justified by one area paying more than another simply because they pay (and cost) more. My wife is a nurse that moved to the shore where she QUICKLY learned that lesson. The solution is either move BACK or be quiet. If society doesn't consider this, the cost of living on the Shore will quickly increase to the point where people here will need to move on.

  28. Safety is at the forefront or none of the other choices are worth a hoot. Obvious.

Current or recent students have proven to be the source of most safety issues and failures.

We've covered this ground before. The current inability to quickly and consistently discipline misbehaving students has its roots in Federal law, which drove regulations placed on the states; they in turn dictate to local districts. Obama's appointees pushed this approach happily.

A young child enters school with the imprint of parental teaching, good or bad, in those earliest years. The 'good kids' mostly continue in that direction, especially if the parents continue active parenting. Kids with less desirable habits can be taught what is expected; they can improve, stay about the same, or regress. Teachers are not magicians but are persistent, and there are positive stories. Many kids come from and return to chaotic home situations each day.

The teacher union has political objectives handed down from state and national union level, but support for those plans is soft even among educators who are members locally. Don't tar the rank & file without really talking to them. Bear in mind that non-members can't vote in union elections.

IMHO federal and state regulations need to prioritize the needs and rights of diligent students for a safe and productive setting, and to expedite moving disruptive students to settings where they can attempt to learn in a much more structured environment.

"Schools throughout the country are grappling with teacher shortage, data show"

Your headline doesn't reflect the "massive shortage" alleged by the comment at April 5, 2018 at 8:44 AM (you perhaps?) Embellishment only diminishes the value of your comment. If your headline is true, then there is no "massive shortage", and those words are just propaganda, like I said. Every industry has employee attrition and turnover. It is why there are personnel departments. But attrition and turnover do not equal Massive Shortages, rather they are just the normal course of staffing a workforce. Sounds like you are the one with myths and personal feelings in your embellishment of a personnel issue experienced by all businesses, for your own personal gain. Words have meanings. Use the right words. Research is useless without comprehension of meaning. Click some more. I'm not embarrassed at all, but you should be.

  32. I have been an avid reader of Salisbury News for a long time! I can tell by the writings, you have a lot of uneducated as well as many very educated readers and responders. I love the people who say if teachers doesn’t like the pay, get out. These people wanted to be teachers and went to college for it! They did not go into teaching for the money, but for the opportunity to teach your kids the things they need to get ahead in life! Over the years attitudes by parents, video games, and horrible TV has changed the attitude of our young kids! They now feel that they do not have to respect teachers or any adult,. I would like any adult who thinks teachers are overpaid, go to any middle or high school and spend a day! See the disrespect they have for teachers, the school, and the use of the F word will shock you. Schools have changed and your perfect little kid is not as sweet as you would like to think. Teachers are bending over backwards to try and help student to pass, and the kids are too busy playing games on their phone to give a darn! Ladies and gentlemen, before you make stupid statements such as I have read here, know the facts, or keep quiet until you do! I too use to think teachers were over paid for the job they do, not anymore! I see the kids today and may God help us!

Many of us are conservative people who cannot express our views freely in the workplace. Schools are out of control. Behavior is incredibly bad and the Board ties our hands. My kids go to private school so they can grow up in a quiet and controlled environment where they can learn. Make no mistake, I love the kids I teach, and wNt the very best for them.

  34. There is another association called the Eastern Shore Education association. Teachers can get the same professional liability coverage for a fraction of the cost. The state and local teachers union blocks the ability of this organization to let employees know they have other choices to protect themselves against false claims.

  37. I as a teacher, would happily give up a pay raise in exchange for better behavior in the classroom and schools. As for pay raise, they might as well give them to the students, because that's who the BOE and DOJ are allowing to run the schools.

As a math teacher, let me explain to the uninformed, how a teacher gets paid over the summer. First of all, we don't get rewarded with pay checks for the act of not working for the two summer months. Teachers are a salary employee. That means that are paid for the year, the same amount, regardless of hours. Teachers are considered a 10 month employee. Let's say a teacher makes 50,000. They can chose to be paid over 10 months, which is 20 pay checks, which some do. Or, they can get paid over 12 months, 24 pay checks, which many do. Guess what, if they choose to have pay checks for all 12 months, they get a smaller paycheck amount, which is fine for most, but do not think of this as a bonus, this is simply money withheld each paycheck during the school year to be saved and paid at a later date.

So anyway, for the who are struggling with 4th grade division, choosing a 50,000 salary over 20 paycheck a gets someone 2,500 per check before taxes and insurance and all the fun stuff, but NO pay over the summer. Getting paid over 24 checks, gets the teacher the same amount for the year, but lesser pay per check, 2,083 before deductions. Again, teachers are not rewarded with pay for not working over the summer. Now if you want to say they are rewarded by not having to work over the summer, I'll give you that. We earn it. Come visit a school, or if you are really brave, sign up to be a sub, even if it's only for a day.

Not only that, the money the BOE withholds from each paycheck for the teachers who choose 24 pay gets invested, which generates more for the BOE towards education, now don't ask me how they spend it? I don't want to go too far with a percent interest lesson, because some might still be struggling with the long division.

Have fun all. Vote smart, liberal policies make the kids and parents and society the way they are. Are there lazy teachers everywhere, sure. For the most part, teachers and students in Wicomco have it pretty good, but trust me, the situation in our schools is getting worse.
