Breaking News: The U.S. government is close to reopening: Senate Democrats helped advance a stopgap bill after a G.O.P. pledge to continue immigration talks

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to end the three-day old government shutdown, with Democrats joining Republicans to clear the way for a short-term spending package that would fund the government through Feb. 8 in exchange for a promise from Republican leaders to address the fate of the young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers.

“In a few hours, the government will reopen,” said Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader. “We have a lot to do.”

  2. Isn't the congress part of the government? Maybe we should have a lengthy shutdown . Congress may as well shutdown , it does nothing for the people anymore but give us drama . Schumer should have a price on his head , the rest should have a bounty on them.

  5. Just so you all know this is advance... This so called shut down is only to scare you the people and to keep giving in to what the politicians want, and so it looks like one side is fighting for you over the other... Nothing more, nothing less... The govt when so called "shut-down" is not shut down... All non essential personal does not report to work, but govt is still open and working and operating... Just not rangers for the parks and secretaries and the like... Also keep in mind, it is LAW, get that??? There is a law, that govt workers get back pay during a shut down, and so in reality nothing is shutdown nor does it save anyone any money... The workers who don't go in due to shut down will still get a pay check and back pay so in essence they are like cops who murder people, they get a paid vacation until allowed back on the job...

  6. Before anyone praises and encourages the government shutdown, remember that a lot of average joes and government contractors are affected by this. Its not all corrupt politicians. There are far more good, average citizens that would by hurt by a lengthy shutdown then there would be corrupt politicians.
