Drama: ‘I Had Tears of Rage’ Over Trump’s ‘Vulgar Language’

Tuesday at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Department of Homeland Security oversight, referring to President Donald Trump’s alleged “shithole” comments, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) lectured Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over her testimony.

Booker said, “Now, I’ve been in the Oval Office many times and when the commander in chief speaks, I listened. I don’t have amnesia on conversations I had in the Oval Office going back months and months. I had individual meetings with the president and I’ve had group conversations where there was, as you said, cross-talk. And why—why is this so important? Why is this so disturbing for me? Why am I frankly, seething with anger? We have this incredible nation where we have been taught that it does not matter where you’re from, it doesn’t matter your color, your race, your religion, it’s about the content of your character. It’s about your values and your ideals, and yet we have language that from Dick Durbin to Lindsey Graham, they seem to have a much better recollection of what went on. You’re under oath. You and others in that room that suddenly cannot remember. It was Martin Luther King that said there’s ‘nothing in this world more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.’ And so here we are in the United States of America, and we have a history that is beautiful and grand and also ugly—where from this nation to others we know what happens when people sit by and are bystanders and say nothing. When Oval Office rhetoric sounds like social engineering, we know from human history the dangers of that.”

  1. Joe,

This is slightly off-topic from teary Booker who was mayor of Newark, NJ (often compared to a third world slum). But since it involves tears, which are water...

This is a follow-on to the discussion a few days back about sprinklers. It's from Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit from about 8 pm Thursday.

SO WE HAD A FLOOD AT THE LAW SCHOOL TODAY, with a burst pipe in the sprinkler system. Almost half the faculty had our offices flooded. What was really amazing is that some students (led by a Marine) got on a group text and organized to do damage-mitigation almost instantly. I was in class, and by the time I got out and found out what happened, they had already gotten my computer, other electronics, and various obviously important books and paper out of my office, and a bunch of them, barefoot and with their pants rolled up, were doing the same in other offices. Nobody had to ask them to do it, they just organized themselves. If you wonder why I think UT Law is a special place, this is an example.

His article, and the comments, mostly talk teamwork and pitching in but there are some informed comments about the downside of water on the loose. So they'll have a big cleanup bill due to the broken pipe but the state will pay. Not so for John or Sue the homeowner in MD. Still not thanking Mathias.

  4. So this whole Sh**gate thing is over a private phone call he got from Durbin, a proven liar, and now everybody in the room testifying under oath never heard those words.

Has Durbin been asked under oath about it" Did he lie twice?

  6. I cannot believe he screamed at a woman like this on live tv in 2018 and has had ZERO blow back from the progressive left and woman's rights? I thought Trump was a bigot? He put a women in charge of one of the most powerful positions in the WORLD only to be treated like a victim of abuse by the LEFT! Totally confused!

  7. It's called "grandstanding" and it carries no political or intellectual weight.
